I'm so glad i only started watching Naruto so late that when i was finally caught up it was at the end of the Pain battle. Literally the first time i had to wait 1 week was the episode where Naruto is hailed as a hero and thrown into the air at the end of the episode by the villagers.

For Itachi to be people's favorite character essentially tells them he must be likable in some way and that gives them clues as to what will happen going forward

Itachi was diagnosed with some kind of disease shortly after joining the Anbu. No one really knows what it is, but we've speculated for years that it's something like Tuberculosis. A lot of the fans have always suspected that, or some kind of other pulmonary disease. Because he's always grabbing his chest and breathing heavily, but it could be heart disease too. It actually reduced his stamina and lowered his chakra levels. That's why he gets gassed so easily from using the Mangekyou Sharingan. The blindness is a direct affect of using the eyes, but that affects all MS users who don't have EMS. Itachi would be way stronger if he didn't have the disease holding him back. Greatest child prodigy in the Leaf village since Minato Namikaze.
