To be fair, he didn't really add much of his own flair to it. The horror of the Backrooms is pretty much already established and he just adapted it to a new medium pretty well. This is a monster of deceptive strength if it can pick a person up like it’s nothing, while they’re actively struggling, and snap them in two. The Backrooms is similar to SCP, it started as a single 4chan post and expanded into a community of thousands of levels and entities. There reason that there are levels and stuff is because the physics of the realm are often compared to video games. The main way to navigate levels is by nocliping. The fact that the there are levels and entities has nothing to do with video games, although video games have been made. The yellow area in the video is called level 0 and is part of the “Main 9”. The Main 9 are levels 0 - 8 and are sometimes referred to as the true canon. There are two main canons, the wikidot and the fandom. The main difference is that the fandom allows for levels to be made by anyone at any time. The wikidot uses a green light system to ensure quality over quantity. The wikidot has approximately 1000 well made levels. The fandom has way more, however, a lot of the levels look like they have been made by a toddler or someone that really doesn’t care about what they are submitting. There are also many objects and groups in the Backrooms canon, such as the Major Explorers Group or MEG for short. The creativity has evolved to the point where anything is possible and there are no necessary rules or regulations about how the Backrooms works. The terrifying factor is that you could be running from a Smiler (entity 3) in one level, trip over a wire, noclip through the floor and be surrounded by hundreds of them. The Partygoers are often implied to be the most terrifying thing in the Backrooms. They are highly intelligent humanoid creatures that can lure prey by editing documents to their will and creating a false sense of safety when encountering any. Look out for a smiley face ( =) )at the end of a piece of information, this means that a partygoer has edited it. There is internet and power in the Backrooms but it is not sure how. Just to reiterate THE BACKROOMS IS NOT A GAME AND DIDN’T START AS ONE. It was made out to be similar to a game in physics and geography. It is impossible to fully describe the Backrooms in one comment, I recommend reading the wikidot to learn more. Thanks for reading!

Mat's first reaction "why does this seem familiar?" really hits on what makes The Backrooms so interesting. The lore of the Backrooms relies heavily on liminal spaces, places that invoke a sense of eerie familiarity. Places that feel like you know them, but are just beyond the edge of your memory. The Backrooms, in themselves, are a place that feel so familiar, and yet foreign at the same time. "Why does this feel so familiar?" Because it's meant to feel that way, and in a way that familiarity in itself creates the uncanny horror that is the 600 million square miles of Level 0.

Technically, liminal spaces are any place that is used as a transitional space between other places. The most common examples would be rest stops, airports, and crossroads. There's a whole mystique about them, in that they're places that don't really have an identity of their own but instead mark the passage between destinations. It's that ambiguity that some people find extremely spiritual (see also: the devotion the ancient Greeks, as well as many modern pagans, give to Hecate as the Goddess of the Crossroads) and others find extremely unnerving.

Because it’s shown as a theme earlier when the cameraman is getting chased, I felt like they could have done that again, but since it’s so close (and easier to see) it’d be a lot creepier to not fully see it and have distorted vision. Even if the design is basically a stick figure. Not actually fully seeing it (especially when it’s just wobbling around) makes it even more terrifying. there could have been a little bit of editing or something to that one specific moment to make it feel even more real. Because once you see the creature (especially when it’s rigged to walk without joints) it isn’t really as scary anymore. But besides that I absolutely love this idea and all of these concepts. The monster - every time I see it - reminds me of a drawing that’s been animated off whatever surface it was created on. Rather than wires, it’s made up of the lines from its drawing. It seems kinda viable to me when you consider that the cameraman only encounters the actual monster which chases him after finding the image of eyes and a nose on the wall. Even though there are other things that show up along the way, none of them resemble the monster or appear to interfere with the cameraman’s journey. Also, the reference to ‘levels’ I think refers to the levels that the cameraman either falls through or could potentially fall through.

The backrooms actually started as a post on 4chan as a short creepy story thing, it attached an image of the drab yellow empty office space and described it as "where you go when you no-clip out of reality". So basically, its a pocket universe sort of thing. A reality that exists as a backroom to our reality, that not only has hundreds of miles of seemingly randomly generated space, but millions of levels in the space itself. However it is also a hostile environment because apparently "god forbid you hear something because its already heard you". Since originally being posted i believe sometime in 2019, a massive fandom has gathered around it and its become one of the largest collaborative writing projects on the internet. People make their own levels and add monsters that roam the place, its pretty ok

One thing that I noticed is that someone was walking to the camera at the end of the video. You can see the screen shake slightly and if you listen carefully, you can hear the footsteps. The cameraman also doesn't fall. He gets captured. These two together make me think that now that they've seen the cameraman, they're watching him and need to make sure that the footage doesn't get out.

The Backrooms aren't based on a game. It's based on a post with a photo and a text explaining it. The idea is that the backrooms is the space outside reality where you end up if you noclip out of the world. The idea of it later took off with people expanding it. Now it has monsters, survivor clans and hundreds of different "levels". (different versions of the backroom with its own properties) After it blew up and began rapidly expanding, it got a few games and short films based on it. This is just one of the bigger things to come out of the fandom lately.

For Matpat to get some things cleared. The back rooms where made by a simple 4Chan thread. The thread soon had people wondering and videos would pop up trying to expand apon what the Op had created. There would be games that would be inspired by it and made to try their best to replicate what the OP had made in their own way. But one thing is for sure. The back rooms are a dimension or realm that only noclipping is the openly way to enter, and I’m not joking, it is part of the lore.

it's a bit sad that people have forgotten the true intentions of the backrooms. Nostalgic rooms which are made to house many people, but for some strange reason, these are empty. The familiarity is probably because he heard the name in passing or while on the internet as it has been a fairly popular thing as he says it (the name I assume) sounds familiar (4:38), not looks familiar, but yes, Liminal spaces is definitely another quality that MatPat picks up on as he says that he finds the use of space to be unsettling (around 7:22). The combination of sensations and feelings such as nostalgia and loneliness in a place where there should be no loneliness, along with the feeling that there is probably something around the corner (when in reality there is nothing), is which causes so much discomfort. But now it's turned into a kind of generic scp which falls into the most cliche form of horror, monsters and strange creatures that are worthy of a creepypasta not at all terrifying.

Actually the back rooms started as a liminal space image, the image was of plastered yellow walls, the damp moist carpet, and the loud buzzing of the fluorescent lights. A land between time and space that is supposed to invoke sense of nostalgia even when there is no nostalgia there a mesh fractured memories. But there is no one... You are alone, there are no signs of life. And only the uncanny scenery awaits you. There are many levels to the back rooms, and that is only level one. Liminality is any photo that reminds you how it feels to be a child again to have no stress no responsibilities no worries, time when just existing was enough you have to prove yourself with degrees scholarships none of that matter you were just happy to be alive and that's what the back rooms is suppose to remind you of. It should remind you of a time before that all too familiar existential void creeped up into your life... But not but. You are in the era anymore... There's something off. It is not a game it is an idea. The game in reference is a game that somebody made based off of the back rooms. The image started the game not the other way around. (And if you haven't seen the image search it up)
@mr.kittysavestheworld6953 жыл бұрын
That's... not even remotely close to what a liminal space is. At all. I don't know where you're getting this stuff about nostalgia and childhood but that's wildly inaccurate. Liminality (from Latin meaning "threshold") is a feeling of unease, ambiguity, or disorientation that occurs when you stop in the middle stage of some kind of passage, when you're no longer where you were, but haven't reached where you're going. A liminal space is a phenomenon that exists involving thresholds because of the way the human brain contextualizes things. Think of a staircase, for example: The human mind is extremely heavily reliant on context; in the case of stairs, their context is what’s on either side of them. Their existence is not for themselves. When you stop on the stairs, and remain there, you’re breaking that context. This confuses your brain on a subconscious level. More examples might be a school building when school’s out of session, abandoned stores, empty buildings, being awake when everyone else is asleep, etc; you’re experiencing these locations out of context, so reality feels altered or incorrect. Your brain tells you that something’s wrong because you’re supposed to continue moving on, or be doing something, but you’re not. The area is outside of its context. Our brains like familiar situations, so when you’re in a place where the brain has already established a context, but it’s wrong, your instincts tell you; ”Oh no, this isn’t right. You need to get out of here immediately.” But the logical part of your brain tells you it’s fine. This internal conflict creates an ambiguous sense of unease called a "liminoid sensation."
@kinggalactix3 жыл бұрын
Sir or Miss, your definition on liminal is just wrong. Liminal spaces are places that make you feel uneasy and uncomfortable. It really puts you in fight or flight.

Basic explanation of the backrooms: The backrooms is a collection of a unknown number of levels, or areas, some of these levels are safe, some of them arent. There are a few backrooms wikis, but the main ones are the fandom, liminal archives and the wikidot. Theres also different interpretations of the backrooms which im pretty sure Kane’s is. The level with the yellow walls is Level 0, the first level of the backrooms. But the weird thing is, no entities have been spotted on this level, so it could be a sublevel of it. The level with the windows looking out over a courtyard is level 188 (i think?) Im not sure what the entity in the video was. Also, it didnt start as a game, i think it was a creepypasta then a whole huge fanbase developed around it. Its a very interesting concept and it’s recently became super popular.
