I think this version of the head and arm choke is superior to the traditional one. Also, you're right, it does feel a lot like a north south choke. You always seem to put great techniques out there. Thank you 👍

I've been doing the arm triangle wrong all along. I've been neck cranking. It's like an arm in north south choke from the side. Eureka! This guy also showed me how to do the darce properly without neck cranking. I thought arm in chokes were my thing. I wasn't even doing them right.

Excellent video, Lachlan! When you turn your opponent towards you to adjust your grip at 8:43 how do you keep them from circling their arm around your head and freeing their arm? It seems that space is created since the mat is no longer trapping their arm in. Is it just a matter of pinching with your head properly?

Good question, yeah try to keep your head in position/forward as much as possible while you pull them toward you. Its a necessary part of making the choke tight, but is also an area where you could lose the arm too.

Great vid! Sometimes higher belts are able to transition into an arm crush when I'm trying to get head control while in their half guard (2:00 in the vid). Any tips on what to look out for or what I should be doing to prevent that?

Hi Paul, i'm not sure of the term arm crush, is that like the kimura grip? If that is happening, make your elbow doesn't flare out while you reach for the head. If they grab your wrist, bring your left knee (in this video) over their forearm to break the grip.

Thanks for the response! So it's when I'm reaching to get head control but the guy on bottom pinches my wrist with his head and shoulder and then pulls right above the elbow. Any tips appreciated.

ah ok, its always hard to say without seeing it, but it might be that you are too low on your opponents body. If you have to outstretch your arm to grab the head they have a chance to attack that arm. Try bringing your shoulder closer to the head before reaching and let me know if that helps!
