I can remember watching the movie some time ago, quite liked the general premise. The books do sound like they have some similarities with Roadside Picnic. All the best for the new year!

Roadside Picnic has definitely been an influence here. I suppose the interesting thing about Vandermeer's books is that some attempt is make to 'explain' the unexplainable, something that Roadside Picnic wasn't particularly interested in doing. Loved that book also, but this is stranger and more intriguing. Cheers Billy! Thanks for your patronage this year. All the best for yourself and your channel in 2025!

Great review John! I suspect I'll feel the same after reading it. I didn't think there needed to be another book but we'll see. Frank got it for Christmas so it's next on my list! 👍

Thank you, Karen! I certainly enjoyed it and I think it sits along the other three books quite nicely. I think I would have benefitted more if I had re-read the other books beforehand. Might have been slightly less confusing at times! Happy new year, by the way! All the best to you and your family for 2025!

You and I ended the year on the same book! I agree with much of what you said here!

Like you, this new instalment comes as a complete surprise to me! I'll have to check it out.

If you liked the original trilogy, you'll certainly like this, too. I think I would have benefitted more from it had I recently re-read the first three books. But I remembered enough to make it a rewarding experience.

I don't mind spoilers at all. In fact I've read a number of books after hearing spoilers because the spoiler filled reviews I got sounded more interesting than the spoiler free reviews.

That's good to know, Jeff! Thank you. I tend to include spoilers because, like you, I'm attracted to books if I know some highlights it might feature. I guess I just need to give more warnings, as everyone seems to have different ideas about what constitutes a spoiler. Cheers for watching and commenting on my stuff this year, mate! All the best for 2025!

Hey, I loved the review. I finished reading Absolution a few days ago, and as a non native English speaker, I found it quite hard to read, specially the F*** parts 😅

Thanks very much! I'm glad you liked the review, I'm not always sure if I do the books justice. Ah, yes. I also struggled with that and I'm a native speaker! Hope you still enjoyed the experience of the book, though.

Please don’t lose sleep over the spoiler bit in The strange case of X-I’d read it first 😂 Loved Absolution. Thanks for all your reviews 😀

Thank you! You were absolutely right, I just need to be careful to give warnings of potential spoilers that might pop up!

Absolution is one of the best things you’ve ever read???

@@Lu__Kang_ No, I said the original Southern Reach trilogy was one of the best things I've read.
