Lots of metal singers have got range and power (Tarja or Floor), but Su's one of the few singers I know that can be that expressive of emotions in her singing. From her facial expressions, the pained smile, to how she's singing with slight hesitation like she's choked up with emotion.... She's not just a vocalist.... That's one of the many reasons I like her, she doesn't just sing a song, she performs it... From facial expressions, to her own interpretive dance moves, its a whole package.... If a western pop singer sings a sad ballad, they might just lower their eyes a bit, a slight frown... When Su does it (like in Akatsuki Unfinished or No Rain No Rainbow), you can hear the cracking of her voice, the slight choking back a sob, the painful smile expression... Better than some hollywood actresses. 🤘🦊🤘

She is a top performer, I don't know how else to say it. When people say, she can channel emotion really good, we can even see at 5:14 how she has a tear on her face (that's not sweat, because her make up had run out, you can see it in the next song). I don't know how she does it, I got a lump in my throat and can't speak when I'm about to cry. Well, years before that they were complaining she was singing to loud at home ! 🙂 Ohh, yes, the finished version is amazing in other ways, Budokan 2014 Black Night is a good one.

⚡ / 🔴 🌙 A Su-metal classic. 'Akatuski' was her first solo song with BABYMETAL. It was released with the 'Megitsune' single in June of 2013. I think it's interesting she omits the final two lines of the song in this version: "Dye crimson! Dye bloody crimson!". Su had performed the heavier version several times before this, and many times afterwards, but this 'Legend 1997' show is the only time the "Unfinished" version was ever performed. I think that Su's acting talents are severely underrated. She has mentioned in interviews that she will often select a specific part of a song for special emotional emphasis. In this case, it looks like she decided to apply that to the whole damn song. The studio release of this version was included with the BAW 2014 Booklet #2. BAW (BABYMETAL APOCALYPSE WEB) was an early version of their fan club.

Awesome. Absolutely love this performance. Su-metal is amazing at conveying emotions in this song and absolutely crushes it vocally. All that from someone who just turned 16, incredible! And, to top it all off, after you get hit in the feels, they close with that epic BABYMETAL DEATH! 😆🤯 Despite all the above, I still enjoy the full version more! I need my love ballads with a side of blast beats 🤣. *Budokan 2014* version showcase the Kami Band more. And *Budokan 2021* version showcases a more vocally mature and experienced Su-metal. 🤘🦊

Excellent reaction and analysis, thank you.🦊Su-metal really is extraordinary - we may not understand anything she is saying, but she makes us feel every word. The Legend 1997 concerts was almost like a rock opera in itself with the story line running throughout of how JPop Idol Suzuka Nakamoto sacrifices herself and gives everything up, even her human existence, to be reborn as the Metal Goddess Su-metal. This was her last moment before 'BABYMETAL Death' which you watched previously, so you already know what happened next for the finale. This was a one-off performance of the "unfinished" version. Yes, you really need to see the full version - same melody, same lyrics (plus the last line which she did not sing here ... maybe that is why this is "unfinished") but a completely different feel - it could be a completely different song. Live at Budokan, Black Night (just a couple of months after this, early March 2014) is a lot of peoples' favourite performance ... there isn't a bad performance, but they do change things up in one way or another in several of the different concerts. 'Akatsuki' (crimson moon) is inspired by and pays homage to X Japan's song 'Kurenai'.

Thanks for this reaction, your review and insights are great, it makes this so fun. So thanks! Su-Metal has power, precision, theater, and crowd control that are all just top notch. She is just one of a kind. Something Babymetal does with live performances, frequently though not always of course, is tell a story with the entire set and morph the music/theater of the performance to that story. This is such a prime example, I'm sure you are going to catch the Budokan 2014 version at some point and see what I mean. Legend 1997 actually has a self-contained example, the first song of the setlist is "Headbanger" - with an operatic opening - and full jpop routine - and it is a house/remix version - and even has some lip sync sections (which is not uncommon in some jpop performances). The twelfth(?)ish of the set is also "Headbanger" - a heavy metal version. This fits the overall theme of Suzuka's 16th birthday where she sacrifices her self as an aspiring idol to take on the role of Su-Metal as a metal goddess, the entire set transitions towards metal as it goes; until this song, then finishes with Death. It also shows how they take any song, and do anything they want with it, and it's just amazing music and performance. always cool seeing your take on their stuff! Look forward to more.

I'm glad you appreciated this one! When Su collapses to the ground and you can hear the emotion in her voice dialed up to 11 it gets me every time. The normal version of Akatsuki is definitely worth checking out as well eventually. I'm going to keep recommending From Dusk Till Dawn (Live at Budokan) because that song is just incredible and it might be Su's best vocal performance ever. They have only ever performed that song live two times. I'd also love to see your takes on Kagerou, Syncopation, and MAYA if you're in the mood for some of their heavier/faster stuff. Shine, Time Wave, and THE LEGEND if you want some softer atmospheric tracks. You really can't go wrong with anything but those are some of my favorites.

Suzuka Nakamoto (Su-Metal) began her show biz career as a model at age 5. By age 10 she was signed to Amuse entertainment (Japan’s largest entertainment company). She sang in a trio called Karen girls. They played in front of large audiences. At 12 yrs old she was chosen to head Babymetal. Michael Jackson also started his show biz career at age 5. At age 11 his band ( The Jackson 5) were signed to Motown. Suzuka like Michael by age 16 had tons of live shows under their belts. Su is one of the few performers that can bring me to the point of tears. Which says a lot for me, as a hard core metal fan. This girl emotes like no other. There are others with more power and more range, but God damn, her tone is out of this world. I don't think there is much difference in the finished and unfinished versions of this song...accept the finished version is metal. I'd suggest the 2014 Budokan performance...its another Su solo song from back in the day. Just her on that rotating stage with the Eastern Kamiband behind her.

I'm really happy that you reacted to this song. It is my favourite version, but the biggest version is from Budokan in 2014 (I think). I love the unfinished version the most, in my opinion, the Budokan version doesn't stack up against this, it is merely excellent compared to this superb performance. To be fair, unfinished and finished versions are both incredible performances. I just lean toward the unfinished version.

Great reaction, I agree Su's voice is incredible even back then. The finished version is wildly different and would be a full metal song. If you're ever interested in doing another combo reaction like that Monochrome and Monochrome (piano version on the First Take channel) is in a very similar situaiton to the 2 Akatsuki versions .
