You said the word "play" a few times and it made me happy. Every time I've done an abstract I have started with that in mind. If you don't have fun doing it why bother doing it at all? Just wondering. Have you ever taken the finished art and turned it on its side and upside down as well? Sometimes I have been pleasantly surprised by how different it looks that way. Sometimes it looks even better upside down!
