This was a random painting using only a few colours. I think in retrospect I could have left it and not added more dark or lifted out the lights and it would have been a painting without a subject but a very soft vibe!
Interesting process and interesting result. You could use this process to create a background to any detailed watercolour work as well.
The colours used were:
yellow ochre
winsor red
mix of winsor blue (red shade) and light red (the colour seemed a little more like the mix I often use of cobalt blue and light red but was darker than that).
This painting was painted on a half sheet of Rives BFK etching paper 280gsm, white. The piece of paper was 38cm x 56cm.
I used multiple hake brushes - Holbeine, Ron Ranson and one Atelier (1 inch and 2 inch)
I also used my flat nylon to lift out some lights and my pure kolinsky round sable to lighten off some of the harsh lifted out lights. A small series 7 round sable to sign the work.
I also used:
3M magic tape to secure the paper to the MDF board
spray bottle
tissues
hair dryer
3M magic removable tape

Hi Neeya! Yes I have a small understanding of how Turner worked thanks to visiting the prints snd drawings room in the Tate Britain in London but mostly actually from my mentor Tony Smibert! He introduced me to Turner and taught me so much! He has many books on how Turner painted! You should check them out! 👍👍

Hi, I'm curious about the tissue you use. It's not a Kleenex type tissue because I can hear that it's more stiff. Is it like a lens tissue that you would use to clean a camera lens? Kleenex I would think would maybe leave bits of fiber on the painting maybe? Thanks

I use the cheapest tissues I can get from woolies or coles!

Love watching you create! Questions: what’s on the surface of your table, I’ve seen you use it as a palette and it’s very easy to clean? Also, is there a particular reason you use tissues instead of paper towels? Just curious if there’s a reason or difference 🧐

Hi Kathryn, glad you like the videos! The surface on my desk is Aligloss composite panel from bunnings in Sydney, Australia. It works really well as a palette! And in terms of tissues I prefer them because they are softer, can be grabbed really quickly and easily and moulded into different shapes more easily! 👍👍👍

Hi Karen! I only seal them if I am going to wrap them around a canvas or if I have painted the watercolour on too thickly and it has gone dull!

Hi Scott great videos. Do you usually decant your watercolour paint into small bowls?

Hi Anne! Yes I squeeze the watercolour out of the tube and mix with water to make a strong mix that is like thickened cream. Then I let it dry out between sessions and just put water in the bowls a few hours before painting then give them a quick mix before starting to paint. I love the strength of tone you can get and the ease of moving between colours. Thanks for watching. Cheers Scott

I just like this soft paper it creates beautiful soft watercolours. Yes it is 100% cotton. acid free. Paper. 👍
