If you listen to "Margaritaville" by Jimmy Buffett you will understand the reference in this song better. I heard him all the time on the radio back in the day and his songs just have a great relaxed fun vibe about them. Jimmy Buffett is a rabbit hole you will surely enjoy going down. Of course Alan Jackson is truly great and to see them paired up is and was just fun. Love it.

When I was pregnant with my first son (2003) my cousin put on Jimmy Buffett's Let's Get Drunk and Screw, the song is hilarious, while we were in her car, my boy started dancing it was the weirdest feeling. (Both of my boys liked to dance before they were born, and after.) All I knew of Jimmy was Margaritaville, even though I had (and still have) a diverse musical family.

Jimmy Buffett is a legend. He has been around since the '70s and his fan base is STILL growing! My grandparents introduced me to his music over 30 years ago... Margaritaville is probably his greatest hit, but there are so many good songs to choose from! He has a huge loyal fan base called "Parrot Heads"...kinda like Home Frees "Home Fries". While his rabbit hole may not be as deep as some others, it's definitely full of feel good vibes and humor.

Jimmy Buffett is a singer-songwriter, musician & actor. His songs have such a laid back island feel to them. I had a couple of his albums. He had a lot of hits especially in the 70's-80's such as “Son Of Son Of A Sailor”, “Fins”, “He Went To Paris”, “Cheeseburger In Paradise”, “A Pirate Looks At Forty”, “One Particular Harbor”, "Come Monday", “Changes In Latitudes, Changes In Attitudes”, “Volcano”, “Boat Drinks”, “Pencil Thin Mustache” etc.

You also forgot to list "novelist" to his credits. Last time I checked, he had 4 novels published. Of course that was a long time ago, there may be more by now. If you read much, "Tails from Margaritaville" is a good place to start.

You need to listen to Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville and then re-listen to this and you’ll catch references. This song is Alan Jackson referencing that song.

Jimmy Buffet was a poor man's idea of salvation from work, stress, life etc, his songs, the idea of being a beach bum and living in the tropics, Caribbean and just picking his guitar for a living is what I always invision when listening to Buffet, it's mostly island music and up tempo like Margaritaville, Volcano, Changes in latitude but he also has the soft slow down stuff like Come Monday, check him out more, he became famous for Margaritaville

Jimmy Buffett is an absolute legend! Of course, I’ve been a parrot head (Jimmy Buffett fan) for 40 years so I’m sure I’m a bit biased. Give him a listen. Songs like Margaritaville, Son of a Son of a Sailor, Manana, Tin Cup Chalice, The Devil I know, Book on a Shelf, Who Gets to Live Like This, Delaney Talks to Statues, A Pirate Looks at 40, Cussin Island, Last Mango in Paris and so many more. He’s got hundreds of songs in his catalogue with dozens of albums. His music will put you in a totally chill mood. Take a pick of any of these songs and you’ll end up down the Buffett rabbit hole.

Lyrics to Jimmy Buffett's 1973 song: Death of an Unpopular Poet: (This somber, sad, even reverent song seem apropos) I once knew a poet, Who lived before his time He and his dog Spooner, Would listen while he'd rhyme Words to make you happy, Words to make you cry Then one day the poet suddenly did die But he left behind a closet, Filled with verse and rhyme And through some strange transaction, One was printed in the Times And everybody's searchin', For the king of undergound Well they found him down in Florida, With a tombstone for a crown Everybody knows a line, From his book that cost four ninety-nine I wonder if he knows he's doin', Quite this fine 'Cause his books are all best sellers, And his poems were turned to song Had his brother on a talk show, Though they never got along And now he's called immortal, Yes he's even taught in school They say he used his talents, A most proficient tool But he left all of his royalties, To Spooner his ol' hound Growin' old on steak and bacon, In a doghouse ten feet 'round And everybody wonders, Did he really lose his mind No he was just a poet , who lived before his time He was just a poet, who lived before his time This song beautifully illustrates the mastery of Jimmy's story telling through song. It would be a great tribute to him if a song reaction on this one was posted. The song isn't autobiographical though he did mention when he wrote it, he factored in his then recent experience of being turned down in the music business so many times before he made it and he does love his dogs. While Jimmy had fanatical fans (known as parrotheads) for those who knew him, he was unpopular with so many people into mainstream music because he only had 1 Top 10 hit. There are few artists with 10+ or 20+ truly great songs in their discography. Though only 1 hit the Top 10, this man has literally written and recorded 100+ songs that are reaction-worthy. Death of an Unpopular Poet is one example of an obscure and awesome song that only a real Jimmy Buffett fan would even be aware exists. Loved that guy. Fins up. You will be greatly missed Jimmy! RIP brother.
