Just want to thank you for this video. I oil and greased an old SX30 Cardinal combo that was sitting 10 yrs in my garage. I’ve never serviced a reel before and really appreciated your style and explanation on what you’re doing and what the parts do. It’s a cheap reel but every dollar counts these days. Plus a bonus is learning something new! They all kinda look the same on the inside. lol makes me wonder what truly is different between models that are only $30-50 apart from model to model when looking in the stores. Keep up good work!

Thank you. Glad to hear that your reel has a 2nd Chance! The difference in prices is usually associated with the quality of materials used in the reel construction - Dennis

Dennis, I actually have a friend who is making me an oscillation slide from a block of aviation grade aluminum. I have two large Bretton spinning reels that have a plastic oscillation slide like the large Mitchell saltwater reels. The reel guy at the sporting goods store cracked the slide by incorrectly removing the spool. He should have called me if he had a problem with the spool and I was more than a little upset about it. No parts are available for a 1961 Bretton 902. My friend and I both have Spanish Sagarra reels that use an aluminum oscillation slide so he is trying to make an aluminum slide for my Bretton. The last 902 I saw on EBay went for over $100 so a parts reel is impossible. If it works I want him to make another one for my Bretton 903. I don’t have the machining tools to even try to do this but he is an old pro at it. I’ll send you photos when I get it of both the old slide and the new one. I wish I was as resourceful as he is. He is one of your subscribers too.

How come you didn't put grease in the sealed bearings? Is it bad to put grease instead of oil?
@2ndChanceTackle2 жыл бұрын
Sealed bearing are just that. You can't put grease in them. I prefer oil to grease as oil does not hold dirt and debris that can stick to the thicker grease - Thanks for asking - Dennis

I relubled and oiled my bearings on a similar abu reel cardinal sx10 and now I can feel a slight clicking or ticking in the handle when reeling, anything you thing might have gone wrong with my service?
@2ndChanceTackle2 жыл бұрын
That would not be the bearings. Check to see if the bearing shim washers are installed correctly - Dennis

Hi Dennis my name is also Dennis, lol. I have a abu Garcia max. X spin reel. My problem is the anti-reverse it working. There is no switch on it to use. I can’t find anything. So I take it apart and there is a plastic lever like object that does move and lock handle. But when I get it put together when the bail/spool part that holds the spool is tightened it goes back to catching sometimes and other times it’s almost like a grinding sound. Please help as I can’t find anything online about. Thank very much for your time. MAXXSP30 is the model number on it.

Hi Dennis I'm guessing that at some point you're going to get teally stumped on a reel, but apparently this one just wasn't it and today wasn't the day !!! Stay strong, my friend

Great video. Nice to see a cheaper reel to be serviced. By the way, you "upgraded" your workbench with a "sophisticated" 😉grease pencil holder: a nice wooden block! Stay healthy, Dennis.

Yes. Nice of you to notice the upgrade. I need to chisel a "V" groove in it when I vet a chance! Best wishes - Dennis

Hey could you please help me out? I bought this reel off craigslist. It was working fine but I ended up taking the bail off(can't remember the reason why). Being a beginner I didn't know some parts would sprung out. I think I may be missing a piece as I remember hearing a something small hit the wall. I can't find it. Where can I find a schematic for this particular model? Abu garcia has schematics and part numbers for every model but this one it seems. I'm not familiar with part names of a reel yet. It is one of the pieces with the spring. Either I am missing a piece or I put it together wrong. The bail won't spring back properly. It doesn't even move now. I am a beginner. I bought this with a couple other reels and rods from craigslist, letgo, marketplace, etc. I've only fished 5-6 times. Would like to fix this reel and use it as well. I assume taking it somewhere to get fixed would be more than the reel itself is worth. Thx.

I am not sure what part popped out. If you send a note with pictures of the open bail and area where the part is missing to my email 2ndchancetackle@gmail.com I will see if I can help you - Dennis

Another Chinese reel I see. That’s not automatically bad. I’ve often wondered - how much milk do you actually drink? LOL Never seen this reel before . It appears to be an okay design. At least the case is metal. Wonder what metal the main gear is made of? Again it is too modern for me. Nice video Dennis. I love to see a reel I don’t know.

This reel is a good value for the price point. I like the design and think it will last if maintained - Thanks Chris - Dennis
