I used Vaseline to grease one of my spinning reels today, after being inspired by this video to try it. Very happy with the results, thanks again for posting this. It will help people save money on buying unnecessary reel grease that is overpriced. A few weeks back I did this method on one of my conventional reels..flushed it out with WD 40 and lubed the gears with Vaseline..a few days after I landed a 115-125 lb tarpon on that reel and noticed how much smoother the crank was. I will recommend your method to others from now on.

I have a relatively new (less than one year old) pen battle II that gets stuck every once in a while for no foreseeable reason. I was handling a fish the other day and dropped it right into the water. It was pretty messed up but this video completely saved my behind. It’s a new reel now, thanks

I mainly use conventional reels since they hold up better with heavy use but I’ve got a 5 year old 4000 penn pursuit II spinner that has been fully submerged twice..once while releasing a snook on the beach, and again while leadering a juvenile tarpon off a sea wall..the reel is still totally functional and I never even broke it down to rinse it out. So when one of my older spinners finally bit the dust I went and got a 4000 penn pursuit iii to go with the ii since I couldn’t find the ii anywhere. These will be the only spinning reels I ever buy again because they’re less than 50 bucks and hold up very well. Might sound crazy but I also find that my spinning reels seem to perform better when I never rinse them off, probably because it ends up driving saltwater and sand particles into the reel. Same for my conventionals. But every now and then I’ll break down the reels and wipe off any old grease and other junk that gets inside. Other than that I just wipe a layer of grease over the reels to help drive out any saltwater that gets on em.

Hi buddy. I realise this video isn't new,but just wanted to thankyou for sharing your advice. I dunked my Daiwa NJ3000BG reel in the sea and the next day it was fine in anti-reverse mode. However,as soon as I flicked the lever into reverse mode it would jam and slip and was pretty much useless. I followed your instructions as I figured I couldn't break it any more than it already was. Today the reel performed as good as the day i purchased it. Thankyou soooooo much Tight lines buddy!

Thanks for the reminders. I actually tried putting some foam on the rods, but hated the arrangement. I think I'm going to keep the rods leashed that I'm not fishing with and be extra careful with the one I am fishing with without a leash depending upon the situation I may leash the one I"m fishing with. This is a learning process for sure. Thanks for watching.

I dropped my pole on the beach (no spike) to try and remove a hook from a fish. Wave covered my rod an reel. It was days before I could clean it. There was rust on the crank shaft. Had to remove everything, sand off the rust, remove the grease and apply new grease, anti-seize, and oil to the various parts. Spins well, not as smooth, and a bit noisy. There was sand an salt in everything. Fortunately it was a $32 Sienna from walmart. Awesome reel. Shitty incident.

the vaseline makes that black gunk because vaseline melts easier in warm condition and what makes it black is the gears rubbing and wearing in thin lubrication. use automotive grease instead much more water resistant than vaseline that can be easily washed away. real grease wont turn black easily

Thanks JC, I’ve done the same thing many times. I had an old Penn 750 SS that I bought in 1974, I was fishing the railroad trussle in Placida and my buddy accidentally kicked my rod and reel into the water. I thought it was a goner because it’s about 20’ deep there close to the old draw. Anyway, 3 weeks later I accidentally caught it and did almost exactly what you did. I did strip it down and little further and used penn lube instead of Vaseline. But that old reel never missed a beat until someone stole it out of my garage in 2012. Thanks for all that you do!

@mulletmaster2392
@mulletmaster2392 5 жыл бұрын
This might sound crazy but don’t rinse your reel. What happens is the saltwater and sand and dirt that got on the outside ends up on the inside and overtime will cause problems. If you must clean reels after a trip just wipe down with a wet rag. That way no saltwater gets driven in to the inside of the reel or underneath parts. Every few months just open the reel and flush it out with WD 40, or something similar and then grease it up with Vaseline just like in this video, then rub a layer of it over the outside of the reel, this will drive away any saltwater that gets on the reel. I stopped rinsing my reels a while ago and noticed I have fewer issues and don’t need to break them down and do a quick service on them as much. I don’t even use expensive gear either. I opened up one of my reels today to grease the gears and noticed there was virtually zero sand or other junk inside but back when I rinsed my gear regularly all sorts of sand and other stuff would end up on the inside.
@romel1088
@romel1088 Жыл бұрын
My only comment is way to much grease. That will affect the drag as the drag works by friction and grease works against friction so when you grease should know where to grease and not just paint it all over everything. Too much grease can and often will make the reel gummy over time so that it does not reel as smoothly. Many of you may never have run into a problem, but the truth about grease is too much is as bad as not enough. Parts should be lightly coated. The gears should have only enough to get it down into the teeth. Oil should be used on other parts than the gears if you want to protect them from corrosion. Know your reel and how it works so you know what needs what.

@@RadReelingFishing so your logic is that because a lot of bad stuff goes down the drain, what's the harm in adding a little more. Well you're not just adding more, you're trying to attract as many people as you can to your channel and demonstrating your bad choices to them. You could try to be a better example. You know...try to be part of the solution rather than the problem? Btw, not all things other than water that go down the drain are created equal and there are ALWAYS safer alternatives out there if you look. I don't put fertilizer or weed killer on my yard, I use white vinegar and baking soda in place of Comet...etc...etc.. When you do have to use products that are harmful, do it in a way that does the least harm. Don't dump the crap down the drain for instance.
