Upon inspecting the lock after our first test we noticed a crack where the bolt cutters had bitten the shackle. We decided to test again with a little more bounce.

i got one of these mini locks and the best defense against cutters like these are to lock up high enough or at an angle so ground leverage is taken out of the equation...i also use the bordo 600 folding in tandem so my ride's pretty secure, ya just gotta really give some thought as to how to use your locks...learn from the videos..

+Tye Cook Yes, campus security at my university has notice that the bikes where the u-locks were placed low to the ground were stolen much more often than bikes where the u-lock was placed high up on the frame...good tip

Nah with these little locks a lot of the time you have to use the sheldon method just to get it to fit to most stuff in cities. That way you secure your bike plus your back wheel, so it's going to be closer to the ground. Plus big bolt cutters will reach pretty high no problem anyway or just prop them onto a brick or anything laying around. My advice would be to use the sheldon method but just get a Abus Granit mini instead. Other than just shackle diameters there's a rockwell hardness scale, and a better lock will get you a better shackle also even if it's the same diameter. Where any bolt cutters that are softer than the shackle, the bolt cutters jaws will break before the lock or chain. So you get up to needing the best, expensive hardened bolt cutters to even stand a chance. Some home depot bolt cutters won't cut it.

This video makes more sense. Cops less likely to be called or ask questions about bolt cutters, even though it is a public bike lock test.

Faulty 2nd cut here because the lock isn't even attached to the bike. You're using all your leverage in the 2nd attempt because there's no bike holding you back. Not a valid cut in my opinion. The fact that you had to remove the bike in order to make a cut tells me that the Abus mini is probably an excellent lock.

abus mini is 14mm diameter and kryptonite evolution mini is 13 mm . Why you can bolt cut only the bigger? I don't think that steel quality can make this big difference. In kryptonite's video it seems you used little force without bounce.
@Giop
@Giop 9 жыл бұрын
giopwheat i mean steel quality shoud be more or less at the same level. There isn't any reason, comparing the price, that should be a big difference in steel quality.

Damn, no wonder my bike shop was selling these for 60% off. Looks like 16mm thick shackles are the bare minimum for complete resistance to bolt cutter attacks. If you can cut a 16mm thick shackle with bolt cutters, I'd be pretty impressed.

Dude you just get bigger bolt cutters. All security boils down to "is it worth it?" You can break into anything if you want to. Someone put the moon 300 thousand km away in vacuum and radiation until JFK was like "fuck that."

Vova3iLvova Unfortunately, rumors abound that U-locks have been cut clean through not just with bolt cutters, but also with power tools such as angle grinders and even chain saws! In high crime cities, this means with a locked bike, vandalism is now the least of anyone's worries. :( I can also imagine there must be also super bolt cutters out there that can cut through a one inch shackle!

If your lock is sufficient good, it would be easier to cut the frame bolted to the street.

If you can boltcut the 14mm of the Abus Mini it should be even more easy to boltcut the Abus 540 with only 13mm or has this better/harder steel? I watches some other videos and there they didnt get the Abus 540 with 13mm cut with big boltcut. So what is the difference here?

When you cut abus how much space was formed ?
@Houseofchain
@Houseofchain 9 жыл бұрын
***** I'm not sure what space you are referring to. If you are wondering if only one side needs to be cut to steal the bike, no. The locking mechanism holds the other side in place so you can't twist the shackle. Both sides would have to be cut. Possibly a force attack after one side has been cut. I'll add that to our testing list.

Vyron Lim Get the New York Standard. The shackle is so thick that no bolt cutter can break it.

Vyron Lim We haven't tested either of those yet but we are familiar with them. Both are great options. The extra security of the New York is offset by its weight. Another option we now like as a result of our testing (videos coming in the next couple of days) is the BikeGuard RockLock 1500. Couldn't be cut with bolt cutters or forced open. More friendly on the wallet than the others :-)

@Chrish-wz3oy

that's not the point, i was just saying if the lock was up higher where someone couldn't use leverage , it could not be cut using bolt cutters the way they were intended to be used (with both hands) and not jumping and putting someones whole weight on them. Any lock can be compromised if the right tools and technique is used.
@Chrish-wz3oy

Maybe that's how they lock bikes where you live but not here, i have never seen that, (except on college campus where there are 100's of bikes still using the old style bike racks where the front wheel goes in) the way most of the new free standing bike racks are here the area for attaching a uLock is high so the top tube is used for the u Lock, ( it is as tall as the average bike so there is no scratching of the bike or suspending the wheel off the ground using the top tube of bike) The base of the bike rack is too thick to get anything except a cable around it, there is a designated welded part that is attached to the top and sides (higher than the rear wheel so all u locks are used on the top tube or the triangle just above front or rear wheel. If bikes were locked the way you say then the rear wheel would be off the ground . Bike racks differ on what part of the country one lives at and how the locks are used. At some stores there is one free standing bike rack for each bike, I have also used the grocery cart return cage, that is a perfect size and there are security cameras there... Hope this helps you understand there is not just one way to use the mini u Locks (and a wrong way) I looked up the sheldon brown technique, the only vid i saw was some guy just took a hack saw and cut the wheel and walked off with the bike in 15 seconds.
