probably the most iconic car ever made… it deserves a rebirth with all the english lineage… my father owned an xk-150 jag but dreamed of an actual cobra… got to drive a mustang shelby 350 but never gave up the lust. make a porsche killer and never look back

Not quite true, the car was designed & built by AC & originally for an 8 but they instead dropped a 6 in for their Euro production version. Shelby did a deal with AC asking if they would build him a version modified to accept a V8 engine to go racing. AC agreed as that was what the car was originally designed for. AC modified the car added things such as upgraded steering, a stronger rear differential to handle the increased engine power, upgraded it's brakes & suspension & a rework of the front end bodywork to handle the larger V8 engine. After testing AC removed their V8 engine & transmission & the car was shipped over to Shelby in the US. All Shelby had to do was drop his Ford sourced V8 & transmission in the chassis. Later versions of the Cobra's design involved Shelby however it was still AC engineers doing all the design & build work. The completed cars were then shipped over fully painted & trimmed out. When it came to the engine sure that was all Shelby but the rest of the car was all AC.

The first Cobras were arguably even less Shelby than that. As it wasn’t “his” engine. They were lightly tuned crate SBF’s. The first version received little more than final (re)assembly and tweaking in LA, before being sold. European market Cobras didn’t even get that, being built entirely by AC. Later development was largely attributable to Phil Remington, not Shelby, although he was a Shelby employee. In essence Shelby floated an idea to AC (others like Allard had been doing similar things for years), and AC did it, by themselves, in the UK, with minor changes to a car they already had developed for the Zephyr 6 motor. Being blunt, Shelby’s involvement was mostly sales and marketing. In typical Shelby fashion, he insisted on calling them “Shelby” Cobras, when really they were modded AC Ace’s, mated to a SBF. And they wore AC badges… As much as I liked Carrol Shelby’s public personality, his gift (post driving career), was largely spin and self promotion. Shelby’s labelling of early Cobras is possibly best explained by fellow racer and friend, the late great Dan Gurney, who stated, “Shel wasn’t overly encumbered with honesty”. He wasn’t nicknamed “Billy Sol” by his friends for nothing (a famous Texan con man). RIP Carroll Shelby. An inspiring, likeable and complex man, who whatever he was, can’t honestly be called the “engineer” of the Cobra.

@@whatdaheck32I’m writing this from Dallas, so no limey here. But seriously dude, Shelby wasn’t really the engineer behind the Cobra project, that title goes to AC UK, and later to arguably, to Phil Remington. (assisted by Ken Miles et Al). But the other poster is correct. The first Cobras were not designed or built stateside. AC deserves the credit for those. All Shelby did was give a crate SBF to AC and ask them to make it fit. He wasn’t even in the UK when they did it. It was arguably AC’s product until later versions were modified in the US for the FE engine, and even then, it was still an AC Ace underneath.. We love our local heroes here, but Shelby simply wrapped his persona around the car. He didn’t engineer it.
