This is a multidimensional win: 1) the idea 2) the editing 3) the humor 4) the execution 5) and most of all, the *%&# amazing musicianship that perfectly dovetails with the visual. It completely succeeds as music independent of all the insane whimsical creativity of it. The world is better for having this in it. Seriously!

This is not a parody. It it a tribute and omage. This song epitomizes the ups and downs, highs and lows that struggling, emerging musicians face when they put themselves up against the turbulent and hazardous waters that are the hard facts and cold shoulders in the industry. They will be challenged to their limits, may be taken advantage of by greedy low lifes, and put to the test at every visible and unforeseen obstacle that gets thrown in their way. They may achieve reaching "the glitter", or be beaten down by the pressures and take that Greyhound bus to home. "On Broadway" tells the story with a few simple yet succinct verses. Cementing together the elements that give it greatness are a heavy NYC vibe by way of tension without release, the strength of the composition and arrangement, the killer hook.

Any guitarist out there that has ever heard themselves recorded it play live will know how difficult it is to sound well rehearsed without bending notes flat or fluffing notes. It's really not easy to play faultlessly. Angus Young is not just well rehearsed, he's extraordinarily well rehearsed. The stuff he's playing really isn't easy to play, in fact it's advanced playing. It's been a good few years since I last looked him up as a guitarist. I'm actually shocked at how good good playing has become! His playing was always excellent, but this showcases how good he really is. I'm actually speechless! 😮

So what we REALLY have hear is some great guitarist who is playing in the Angus Young AND some jazzy benson-esque type style, interweaving them seemlessly as the cool back track plays on. This is basically some cat blowin' with a ANGUS tone and vibe. Not too shabby.

The Drifters were one of Phil Specter's many great Doo Wop Bands who to my knowledge, were the first make 'On Broadway' famous before George Benson. Other famous 'Wall of Sound' recordings by The Drifters include 'This Magic Moment' , 'Under The Boardwalk', 'Up on The Roof' and 'Save The Last Dance For Me.' All AM Radio classics I grew up with and very romantic. Definitely worth checking out.
@robroufla2 жыл бұрын
The first version of "On Broadway" was recorded by The Cookies and written Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. Lieber and Stoller wrote new lyrics for the Drifters, Spector played the solo guitar on the Drifters' "On Broadway" as a session musician. Spector produced the Drifters's version for The Crystals which came out before The Cookies and The Drifters but was recorded after. The Drifters were not a Phil Spector's band, you're confusing with Lieber and Stoller who produced and/or wrote many of their hits.

1:50 you managed to slot in a bit of Hells Bells! This is so brilliantly done - when I clicked on it I knew that Angus Young would never in a million years play George Benson, but you nailed his tone, and did an incredible job of synchronising your playing with his. Amazing job, well done 👍👍

Why is this "George Benson's?" It was written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil in collaboration with the team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller and first made popular by The Drifters (1963).

@@davidhorton1109 Listen, Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil are without a doubt one of the greatest songwriting duos in the history of the world. But you ask 100 people who wrote it, 95 will say George Benson, 4 will say someone in the 70s but I don't remember and 1 will answer Mann/Weil and that's of 100 people that actually know the song. Of course I read the second sentence. Neither one of us would even be here if the title was "AC/DC plays Mann/Weil's 'On Broadway'"

The craziest thing here is that I could hear them wanting to go into "Hell's Bells", and found myself waiting for the church bell clanging to fade in on top of the beat. That would totally work, too. What a wild and supremely talented editing job here. Bravo!
