Wow! So it was a lot of drudgery and like a penal colony where you can be busting rocks all day or chopping wood. Standing puddles, dirt roads, sometimes smoke-filled environment. No paradise. There must have been crops from elsewhere shipping in or agriculture from some other location nearby. Best place to be was at the beach, your home, a temple or library if there is one.
