I've been looking into jobs in both academia and industry for quite sometimes, here's what I know.

HI, I'M NUTSINEE.
I'm a final year physics PhD student at The Australian National University. I make videos about PhD tips & tricks and sometimes random bits and pieces of my poor ass grad student's life. My thesis involves building a squeezed light system at the LIGO Hanford site and developing squeezed light technology for the future generations ground-based gravitational-wave detectors.

There are other benefits i see in industry that i didn't see in academia (after just two short post-docs in the latter and twenty years medical device industry). Maybe some of this is through rose colored glasses. 1) Less Insular - One can interact, on a daily basis, with a wide range of people. People with education backgrounds from high school drop-outs to other Ph.D. and professor types - tradesmen, engineers, sales people, vendors, customers. Each of these people has a perspective and something to contribute. Additionally we are all working for the same goals. I listen to them more than i listen to my manager. Learning from the team is a huge benefit to me. 2) Freedom - My assigned goals are significantly supplemented by the tasks and problems i find while learning from the experts around me. A simple cost-benefit helps justify any project to the boss/bosses. I can pick and choose, to a certain extent, what i work on next. 3) Leave Work At the Office - This was harder for me in academia and it's easier in industry. That made raising a family easier for me. 4) Helping People NOW - A project in Academia may have a longer lead time to helping people and patients. The long term benefits may stay entirely in realm of research. All the companies i work for started as a small academic team, but really exploded when we started production. But by working in industry, the products we make help people in the clinic today. Additionally, a set of dedicated users become a source for improvements and enhancements. Your team grows when you release a product! CON: The IP you work on belongs to the company. If it is your goal, it can be hard to break out and start your own company. Sorry that was so long. It's Saturday and cold outside.

Thank you so much for your insight! No it’s not too long. It actually sounds like you have more freedom in the industry than I thought. Glad to hear that you get to interacting with wider range of people. It’s true that in academia we tend to talk to just a small group of people with specific niche.

@@joelaucca9081 The environment in academia is much more competitive. Jobs are harder to get. So you really have to smart and hard working at 110%.
