'I think one mistake people often make about medieval universities when they think about them, is that they think that they were actually always these free spaces of inquiry, that actually they were peaceful environments in which students learned for the sake of learning or whatever. But actually, what you find when you dig into the history of the medieval university is there's an enormous amount of conflict, controversy. As I say, there's great violence, people are burnt at the stake as a result of things that they said in a university or in a context or as a result of university masters ruling against them.'
Peter Jones, PhD in History, University of Tyumen

Professor Jones makes the claim that Heloise was more brilliant than Abelard. Maybe she was, maybe she wasn't. The problem is that we don't have sufficient evidence to make a judgment. We have Abelard's praise of Heloise's intellect in his Historia Calamitatum and a set of personal and pastoral letters they exchanged (along with some correspondence between Heloise and assorted other individuals). What we don't have is a body of philosophical and theological writing from Heloise that we could compare with what Abelard produced. It may be an appealing thought that behind every brilliant man is an even more brilliant woman, but the appeal of that thought does not obviate the need for evidence. Professor Jones should know this.

Why didn't he remember one philosopher name from Muslim era whom he called "commentators " They didn't just comment on aristotle and plato. If not for these philosophers like Al Farabi, Avicena and others, they will be no Aristotle to read. They're the intellectuals who preserved and expanded on Greek philosophers and maintained the original scripts, what Aquinus did was to rehashe what Avicena and Averos wrote about.

@@mohamedmilad1 that impression is wrong. There is an unbroken chain of greek language transmission of Aristotle, and most of the translations that we now use are directly from Greek. Either way the reason he doesnt mention Islamic/Arabic speaking scholars is because that is not relevant to the discussion of the differences between modern University education and medieval Western European education. There is only so much time.

@@peterclaassen8139 how come there's no mention to these authors in European philosophy and no real analysis of metaphysics until Arabic writers of the kalam theophilsophy and translation of alexandria library books in Baghdad 8th century AD

I'd really appreciate to see more Diversity in who you have in these videos honestly. I like the talks as they are but it's frustrating to see mostly white men when there are so many great scientists out there
