One of my favorite professors!! Took 2 classes with him, Philosophy of Science and Philosophy of Economics! Almost lead me to major in Philosophy. Instead, I pursued my other interests finishing my doctoral degree in sociology. But, he is one of 2 or 3 great professors I had the joy of experiencing.

Amazing! I think it's obvious that the psychological construct cannot actually exist, given that it's so obviously encoded in the English language, and probably through historical development, German tradition. It seems that any intellectually honest person will admit that there cannot be a proper "mental state" because, if nothing else, when would it exist? What is its time extent? Is it also physical, or purely internal? If internal, then how can it ever be demonstrated to another? If it isn't demonstrable, then how is it rational?

What is the Mind-Body Problem? ~~~ It is the Pit into which those who have not gotten the update sink ever deeper; The very simple truth that "I think, therefor YOU are!", proves that Descartes' initial search for 'Universal Truth' had failed. He never crawled from the Pit of duality. Thus the foundation of his (and 'western) philosophy' fails, thus... all these 'hard problems'. Until the update. The critically updated version of the 'Cogito' is; "Thoughts are perceived/appear, therefore an apparent 'I' to think 'I am'!" Thought = Ego = Duality! Pit transcended! 'Hard problem' solved, you can go back to your own beds now, kiddies! ;)

I think that people don't care much about other people. They care more about their own lifes. Do they earn enough to lead a good life (good food, buy a big flat in a relatively good area or a good car, save, travel, have one or two children). And the perception is that they cannot do these things easily like their parents so they perceive their life is worse than their parents. So people are very angry!

this is where Chomsky falls flat on his face, insisting he knows what we were gossiping about---or not--- squatting around our campfires 100 thousand years ago. anybody who owns a dog, cat, or parrot knows they can talk, if not so melodious and fluently with voices then with the other parts of their bodies. i posit non-avian dinousaurs talked--- considering how organized we know they were, how could they not have?

Afghanistan would be a great country if Pashtun don’t sell the country to ISI or Pakistan. He used Yugoslavia as an example Afghanistan and Yugoslavia don’t have any history they were both created by foreign powers and of rebellion. Of course you can’t fix something if it doesn’t exist naturally.

The whole thing stinks as it's a continuing proposal that people lie to themselves about a god in order to somehow be saved from that god (and to benefit religion). How odd that a god would punish his creation for not believing in him. That's not the way of a loving god. Very glad gods don't exist.

I'd imagine in parallel universes there would be future universes of us but our future selves with more advanced technology still don't have the technology to see us meaning we are most likely already d*ad before we were able to get to that point

Aging is driven by entropic principles in genetics. The information in our dna accumulates damage creating the environment for aging to occur.
@felipemldias
@felipemldias Күн бұрын
Why don't clones of old organisms have reduced lifespans then? If the DNA they've used for the cloned had already aged, that should be expected, should it not?
@zakmatew
@zakmatew 23 сағат бұрын
@ I would add to that: why mothers have babies? The dna resets itself to an embryonic state. Having said that, the developmental program allows damage to slowly accumulate over time and if not reset (compare it to repairing your vehicle) the damage will accumulate and destroy the organism. The dna is not the only part that accumulates damage. Also, the reset program is not located in the genome.
@felipemldias
@felipemldias 21 сағат бұрын
@@zakmatew @zakmatew What do you mean by DNA reset? Because there's no change to the DNA itself during embriological state, but to the epigenetics (methylation for instance), pointing do a direction similar to what David Sinclair is pointing out in his part of the video.
@zakmatew
@zakmatew 20 сағат бұрын
@ the reset appears to happen during the crossing over, which modern biology considers a random process, but it doesn’t appear to be so.

Don't argue back from undesirable conclusions. If the premises and arguments are sound, accept the conclusion. And you can even find that what you once thought was undesirable or might have socially negative consequences is something we are adult enough to adapt to. The nonexistence of free will is perfectly compatible with a more compassionate, sane society. I like the humanism expressed by Bertrand Russell's quote: “No man treats a motorcar as foolishly as he treats another human being. When the car will not go, he does not attribute its annoying behavior to sin; he does not say, 'You are a wicked motorcar, and I shall not give you any more petrol until you go.' He attempts to find out what is wrong and to set it right.”

Yes yes. Capitalism is the best way to be productive. But the problem of capitalism is not that. Even Marx did tribute capitalism along theese lines. The problem is that capitalism is proces without direction because in capitalistic societies there is a drive to create needs that doesnt contribute to the economy if you see economy as way to allocate finite ressources in a sustainable way. Its a now ideology. Its predicted on the "now needs" in a historical context of selfsufficant beings not thinking about the future but the wellebeing of me and my family. Thats not economicial in any way....

Another question a lot of people seems to refuse to even take seriously or misunderstand is - why does pain and pleasure motivate us? Most answer that its because they are needed for survival and evolved through evolution, but that is not what I asked, is it? Why does it work in the first place is the question. Its just information in the brain so why do we care if there is pain?
