Schopenhauer is one of the most underestimated thinkers in the history of Western literature imo. He had much influence on Darwin, Freud and Nietzsche, all thinkers that are very well known and had massive influence on the develepment of Evolution, Psychology and Philosophy, and all togehter, what the Western world view is today. Just because Schopenhauers writings can come across as dark, doesn't make them less valid. He was a genius.

Underestimated or one of the most disliked? It is rather obvious why. Inconvenient truth. He is not a pessimist but a truth conveyer, exposing the obscure (but the most prevalent) side of what we call human being. Truth is mostly hated, so the genius of Arthur Schopenhauer wasn't acknowledged purposefully. He has made many feel very uncomfortable when they recognize their own nature via his writings.

Most people, even intellectuals are naturally and unconsciously opposed to that. I can only speak from my own experience but so far it's been impossible for me to really the deny "the Will" as Schopenhauer called it. To reflect on my desires and follow them while being aware of what I'm actually doing did wonders for my mental health. Whereas trying to be all-good and moral and living in denial of my own nature and the nature of things more generally only made me bitter and miserable. This is not to say that I have given up on morality or that I no longer try to do good and avoid evil. It's just that I no longer judge myself and others as much for failing at it or behaving in a more amoral and more selfish kind of way. If all is merely a manifestation of the will after all, so are our moral inclinations. In the end it's up to you how you want to act, and to act morally out of my own genuine will rather out of some compulsive guilt has been rather freeing. All this is to say, to whoever is reading this, if you agree with Schopenhauer's premise of the Will, be careful with reaching the same conclusion as him. By all means, try it, but don't be surprised if this sort of ascetic pessimism won't bring you peace and satisfaction in the end.

15:25 I looked up the word "meted" in Merriam-Webster, and made a satisfying find. The example quote was "She realized the stern retribution which justice metes to the murderer." from - Edgar Rice Burroughs. But as I looked up from which book (a Tarzan) I also found a nearby sentence "She knew that murder lay in that savage heart…". I'll be thinking on about that. ERB has written a lot about non-savages killing (war), sometimes on the red planet.

Schopenhauer argues that the beauty you see in the world is a manifestation of the Mind, which imposes order on Matter. Mind and Matter are interlinked, both dependent on each other. Together they create an illusion, a representation. (this is to say if you are referring to the apparent orderliness of the world, beauty in nature and so on)

@@guitarjourney6024 for me personally, from having lived 56 years with knowing of my own inner self, and also the world I live in ( humanity's history, the great beauty of nature), the tried and tested way, the way of Christ, is the hope and resolution. Paul rightly identifies that I am carnal, and hence it is no wonder my desires are selfish. Left to my own devices, in my striving to live, I have brought death to others and myself, millions of times (James 1:14,15). But as I awaken to faith, I see the higher way, dimly. My desires have changed and are changing nearly every day. I desire to be true and to serve my people, and all people. Mere consuming was a most base way of life. It made me weary. Faith was/is not easy, but it is quite joyful and may I say, the solution to suffering.

'How is there so much beauty in the world? How does one explain that?" There is so much beauty to you individually. Beauty is an Interpretation. Define 'so much beauty'. For any example, its beauty is temporary and becomes ugly, decay the permanent condition that always defeats beauty. "An optimist bids me open my eyes and look at the world, how beautiful it is in the sunshine, with its mountains and valleys, streams, plants, animals. These things are certainly beautiful to look at, but to be them is something quite different." -Schopenhauer

15:45 So the spiritual-minded, or religious person, will recognize here, the third main need: Elevation. Above Consumption and Reproduction is the need to 'put off the natural man,' and not rely on beauty for distraction, but strive to grow the spirit within. By focusing on the immaterial self, we can find lasting joy and peace through love and service- by aligning our thoughts and actions with something greater and more eternal than this dark and temporary world.

Still others may have no interest but still manage to survive, thrive & reproduce? Worse still some people claim their spirituality is holier than others who must be considered evil, enemies & a constant threat And at some point some people claim to be the Messiah - to which they are labelled insane, maybe because the story is to teach & connect, not claim religious celebrity?

I remember I had watched your videos on Schopenhauer many years ago and found them so interesting, I subsequently bought a copy of Schopenhauer's The World as Will and Representation. To say the least, it was a very depressing book (which is funny, because if anything he's just a realist for the most part) but it was also... disturbingly accurate... about everything. I was pretty depressed for awhile after that, feeling everything to be demonic and such (as Schopenhauer puts it in no unclear terms). But as you alluded to at the end of this video, and very prudently, I agree that staying in that purely pessimistic state of mind, while honest, is not pragmatic (and perhaps one of the few oversights in Schopenhauer's philosophy). This makes sense, then, that you would naturally follow-up with Nietzsche and his recommendation for one to face up to life and continuously make goals in spite of it (as you and he put it, "that which must always overcome"). How Buddha extolled The Middle Path of moderation, rather than pure asceticism (which, again, as you said, is simply unrealistic for most modern people). How Alfred Adler said most mental illness is caused by the lack of a goal in one's life... In short - great video, as always.

If cessation of WILL is a result of Asceticism (or is it vice-versa), which as it seems, is a result of a struggle, and struggle is a result of a will/want, which we do not WANT, can we therefore not say that the Purpose of Life (at least for Schopenhauer) is the ultimate Rejection of Life? Without pain one cannot know the pleasure, without agony one cannot experience the ecstasy, and so on. This is what life is all about, (experiencing the "good" and the "evil") is it not? According to the Bible, Eve wanted (had a strong will, desire) to know, to feel alive. Was she WRONG? Is it better to be a lifeless thing, a robot? Without WILL one EXISTS (or does one), but is NOT REALLY ALIVE...Hating PAIN is not a good reason to hate LIFE, am I wrong in saying that? I am not sure how to take this kind of Pessimistic "wisdom"; as a STRONG WILL (!) not to have a WILL, to be DEAD? Or is it a case of profound DEPRESSION? Mental illness? Something else? Any other suggestions?

If there was mostly horror it would start to go unregistered. I get the impression Schopenhauer is like that of someone who constantly watches the news all day long thinking how bad everything is. But the reality is that most life is alive and growing, and the horror that comes upon is typically quick (I personally believe all life moves on in spirit including mineral and element like a frequency that’s still around after the TV or radio has been smashed).

"Nietzsche's response to Schopenhauer'. Nietzsche didn't understand Schopenhauer's theory of Will. N equated it to sophism. Nietzsche's response to 'just do something , happily', isn't really a philosophical analytical response. N merely dismisses Schopenhauer w arrogant snide opinions, like a soldier uninterested in philosophical concepts. . For where in Ns writings does he say that the Will is not all pervading, not within every atom, merciless without rest? N misconstrues the term 'Will to Life' by mocking 'How can a living thing Will the Life it already has'? S didn't mean 'Will' in the sense of an individual desiring an outcome for themself. S meant it like energy. Ss Will is the energy that created the Big Bang and the energy that drives discomfort in your body. An organism can never control Ss Will, for how can you control the atoms in every one of your cells? The cells move without your consent.

I always thought this was a prison planet but i did not knew how to explain/describe it as a child and now everyone calls me mad whenever i bring it up. One plausible proof of this is how preety much every organism has to rely on the death of another in order to live. Social norms that we create don't really make it any easier. Conditions that one planet has to fulfill in order to sustain life is very pretentious and rare. Fill in if you believe i missed any.

I can somewhat agree with your point that our system of life is filled with a need for death to occur for our existence to continue on, but as there is much death, there is just but as much life. But, that life will at some point have to go thought the same conditions that the adult of birth did, and from there a cycle continues. But, even to that, that is but the condition of life, a constant cycle of life and death, aka the ouroboros, so even though that is a part of existence that could also be seen as the beauty of it. The cycle of evolution in the minds of the youth and the more comforting conditions that follow. I will also amite that the temporariness of time is constantly draining our lives away to the ever-growing past, we must move past that and learn to live the best existence that we can feasible posses. Also, social norms really do need to change from the old mindset of "work, eat/sleep, then die" for this doesn't allow any room for evolution and this is kinda why I want to replace a good bit of the old social norms with more modern and better one that will benefit people from others and the "world's" discrimination of them. But, your point is still fair to a decent point, but I feel (as an absurdest) that there is much to life and death is but part of it.

@@XplorerOfLife I can actually see your point there, the conditions we set in an endless striving for a "perfection" of our condition and an element of some putting their desires above others, has caused a lot of commotion and has elongated our entertainment from the endless void of boredom.

It's all because people desire more than they can provide for themselves. Wealth only exists for some because all others are exploited, enslaved, and stolen from. If you grew your own food + medicines on your own land, with a store for winter, with access to clean water, you'd be perfectly at peace. But that's not enough for most all, so you buy into promises of wealth, if only you will be a good little servant. And you perish in that servitude, because wealth+power cannot exist unless it's an exclusive club of a few that dominate all others. If everyone was wealthy and powerful, who would remain to generate it? 🤔🙄

I really do enjoy Schopenhauer's musings. But i think Nietzsche wad more on point with his "Will to power". Not only the power that we think as oppressive and exluding. But also that power that includes and creates.

In essence, Schopenhauer's philosophy, though Western, resonates with Advaita Vedanta and Madhyamaka in its quest for understanding the nature of reality, the self, and the path to liberation. Both Vedantic and Buddhist teachings suggest that transcending the illusion of the world leads to the realization of a higher, unified truth, a theme echoed in Schopenhauer's work.

To reconcile Schopenhauer's philosophy with God, one only needs A Course in Miracles. In it, Jesus clarifies that this world was not created by God the Father, but by you, the Son, in a moment when the mad idea of 'what if I were separated from my creator?' was considered. This is impossible, but the fear introduced by the slightest belief that it could be gave rise to this dreamed illusory world of suffering. The explanation for the nature of this world then is 'what would happen if I were separated from God?'.

Do unto others that which you would desire to be done to you. Go as far as possible without surrender to be on good terms with all people. Love, compassion, mercy, honesty, self restraint, self control, are virtues to cultivate. Remove oneself from hateful, spiteful people. They are but brute beasts. Liars and deceivers are devils; reveal them and take them out. The sun, moon and earth are each a perfect size and distance from each other, as are the planets, such as Mars, Jupitar and Saturn. These are my observations and beliefs. I'm not very well educated but I've been able to live here on this earth for 65 years and have done reasonably well. When its my time of dying; I pray that the great creator that shines his lights in the sky be merciful to me; as I have tried to be merciful to my fellow human beings. Good day.

Once again, the non-Christian philosopher smuggles in Christian morality, but denies its source. You can't call something evil unless you have an idea of what good is and his philosophy seems to deny that good and evil could even exist. I'm realizing that even CS Lewis argued against his idea of aesthetics. He couldn't imagine that aesthetic appreciation could be anything other than a glimpse of something even better. His character in the book "Pilgrim's Regress" follows that aesthetic appreciation until he runs into God.

There is wisdom to be found in all philosophies. No single philosophy has all the answers. It is easy to look at life as meaningless especially in the age we find ourselves in, but I always come back to the simple fact that I am here at all is a thing to celebrate. To be content with the experience with all its highs and lows, its a part of the parcel. And if we are here but once then we should rejoice in the time we have here and if we reincarnate then so be it lol. Either way it is a wondrous thing at least, and not something to be taken for granted.
