To bring realized limited government and thus limit the power of Thrasymachus' "Great Men" we need to continue down the path the US Founders set us on... Pitting power against power. That is why I support a Numa or Fourth Branch... the police of the elite. Put teeth into Constitutions, so those who violate their edicts face criminal punishment, instead of meaningless chastisement by their peers, (If those peers don't agree with that violation). @@schumikel8387 The advancements of the Enlightenment were supposed to solve these issues with human nature... but were only one step in a long journey. The Enlightenment changed the philosophical paradigm from, king as sovereign, unlimited government, appeal to authority and divine law to, individualism, objectivism, government limited by Constitution, and a recognition of Natural Law. All of which led to the abolishment of slavery, free market enterprise, the industrial revolution, science and technology. Those who claim it also led to world wars, poverty and exploitation of labor... forget those things all happened before the Enlightenment but were far worse.

Unendowed with wealth or pity, Little birds with scarlet legs, Sitting on their speckled eggs, Eye each flu-infected city. - W.H Auden The Fall of Rome 'In a time when the story falters, the golden story of human promise and progress, the myth reveals itself, like broken bones in a midden.' The Dark Mountain Project was designed for times like these. Ten years of being called a 'doomer' suddenly feels almost amusing when doom arrives. Or what feels like doom to us. Previous generations had it much worse: compared to TB, typhoid or the plague - or being caught up in a World War, come to that - what's happening now is small beer. But our great grandparents didn't depend on a global machine for their subsistence, didn't take plane flights or coffee shops for granted, and knew better how to face death. And so we are awakened from our fever dream, our dream of ease and plenty, a dream which was always built on the backs of sweatshop labour and burning forests, and we begin to glimpse reality through the cracks. Dark Mountain today publishes a long and powerful exploration by Charlotte Du Cann of what ancestral myth can teach us in Days Like These. I interpreted the 'something you cannot see' in your comment as conspiracy theories or stuff you see on your phone and not for real. Not as God and religion as did the other comments. Conspiracy theories are dangerous because they are fear-based and categorize anything that invalidates them as part of the conspiracy. They effectively create a logic that makes it impossible to debunk them from within that logic, like some sort of trap. So you have people fearing and believing all kinds of crazy over-arching or behind-the-scenes theories not rooted in reality or validated by facts. As for the news, things get presented at certain angles and can be manipulated to further certain agendas, sometimes resorting to really disingenuous reporting that distorts the truth or just straight up lying. So it's best to be critical and look at various sources and opinions. Keep an open mind, at least a certain extent, because hate and fear based ideologies are harmful and can trap people, like I mentioned before, and thus should be rejected.

For the longest time, it felt like everyone was on a level playing field, like anyone could speak their mind and be heard, and anyone could support or oppose it by their own free will without fear of being deplatformed, shamed, or becoming a political or moral outcast. The concepts of freedom and intellectual curiosity have been eroded because of fear.

It wasn't my experience that "everyone was on a level playing field" necessarily, but I do agree that the extent to which we can enjoy freely creative minds has been intensely reduced. As you said Bilbo, fear is a major root factor. I'd also add negativity to that mix, as it's the aggressive oppression of tyrants that cause subjects to fear.

Something I always think about with this topic of power, is narcissism. A percentage of people is simply narcissistic, and for obvious reasons it's usually exactly those people who reach positions of power, primarily because that's the essence of their existence. This goes for politics, management positions in business and in the media. As long as we as humanity don't deal with narcissism we will never live in a fundamentally better world. I will just retreat into this self realization in the meanwhile. Thanks for your videos.

The Psychology of Power delves into the intricate ways in which power dynamics shape individuals, societies, and the actions of those in positions of authority. It examines not only the psychological factors that contribute to the rise of tyrants but also the pathways to challenging and dismantling oppressive regimes. Power, as an abstract concept, takes on a more tangible form when it’s concentrated in the hands of a few, leading to a complex web of influence, manipulation, and control that can pervade all aspects of society. Tyrants often arise in situations where vulnerability, fear, and inequality create an environment ripe for exploitation. The psychology behind their rise to power is rooted in the manipulation of fear, the suppression of dissent, and the erosion of individual autonomy. Tyrants exploit societal weaknesses-whether economic, political, or psychological-by capitalizing on the collective anxiety of the masses and offering seemingly simple solutions to complex problems. The appeal of strong, authoritarian leadership often lies in the illusion of control and the promise of stability, especially during times of crisis. However, once in power, these figures tend to surround themselves with sycophants, stifling dissent, and consolidating their influence by instilling fear and demanding loyalty. The psychology of power also reveals how those in positions of authority can become blind to their own corruption. Over time, as tyrants accumulate more control, they often fall prey to a dangerous combination of overconfidence, entitlement, and detachment from the realities of the people they govern. This can lead to disastrous consequences, as their decisions become increasingly out of touch with the needs of society, and their thirst for power grows insatiable. But the most important question is: how do we dethrone tyrants? History offers numerous examples of individuals and movements who have successfully confronted oppressive regimes, often at great personal cost. One of the key strategies in dethroning a tyrant is the unification of people around a common cause. Tyrants thrive on division and conflict, using divisive tactics to maintain control. When people come together across differences, when a sense of collective strength is nurtured, it becomes much harder for authoritarian regimes to sustain their grip on power. Nonviolent resistance has proven to be one of the most effective tools in challenging tyranny. From Mahatma Gandhi’s resistance to British colonial rule in India to the fall of apartheid in South Africa, nonviolent movements have shown the world that sustained, peaceful protest can be a powerful force in dismantling unjust systems of power. The psychological power of nonviolence lies in its ability to appeal to the moral conscience of both the oppressors and the broader society, creating cracks in the legitimacy of the tyrant’s authority. However, nonviolent resistance alone is often not enough. Tyrants are frequently deeply entrenched in power, and without external pressure or intervention, it can take years-sometimes decades-of sustained effort to bring about meaningful change. International support, diplomatic pressure, and economic sanctions can all play a crucial role in weakening the grip of tyrannical regimes, as can the actions of civil society and grassroots movements. When global actors support local struggles for freedom, they help to amplify the voices of those who have long been silenced. Another critical aspect of dethroning tyrants is the restoration of truth. Tyrants often rely on propaganda, misinformation, and the suppression of dissenting voices to maintain their power. Exposing these lies and providing the public with accurate, transparent information can be a powerful weapon in undermining the legitimacy of oppressive regimes. This process, however, requires resilience and courage, as those who seek to expose the truth often face harsh retribution from the ruling power. In addition, the psychological manipulation employed by tyrants can be broken through education and awareness. Providing citizens with the tools to think critically about their leaders, their political systems, and their role in shaping the future of their societies can help to prevent the rise of future tyrants. Critical thinking and the fostering of empathy and solidarity can help to cultivate a more politically aware and engaged populace, one that is less susceptible to the manipulations of those who seek to control through fear and division. Ultimately, dethroning tyrants requires not just an understanding of their psychology, but a commitment to the principles of justice, freedom, and dignity for all people. It requires a collective effort-one that is both tactical and moral-to expose the abuses of power and restore a sense of agency to those who have been oppressed. The journey toward dismantling tyranny is never easy, and it often comes at great personal cost, but it is through courage, unity, and perseverance that the psychological hold of tyrants can be broken, and a more just society can be forged. In conclusion, The Psychology of Power offers profound insights into the dynamics of authoritarian rule and the steps needed to dismantle it. By understanding the psychological mechanisms that sustain tyranny, individuals and movements can more effectively resist and ultimately dethrone those who wield power unjustly. While the challenges are immense, the pursuit of justice and the restoration of human dignity are always worth fighting for.

I find the quote at 2:36 very interesting. I have some friends that I have known for a long time, and as we have just started to go to college; their liberal ideas and health problems have allowed them to be seduced by socialism. The other day while we were talking I made a joke about monarchies and what they are most useful for (unity, protection, and order at the cost of liberty and justice) while also bringing up how misrepresented Thomas Hobbes and his ideas are, that he is actually far more concerned with rights and liberty than you would think someone who supported keeping monarchies. My friends somewhat jokingly but also somewhat seriously remarked that "the older I get the more and more I think having a strong authority figure dictate my life and make decisions for me is a good thing." This seems to clash with the quote I mentioned, but I don't think it does and the reasoning for it opens up an interesting avenue of thought. For my friends a life of freedom, one with no dictation and no total guidance is one they are unfamiliar with, unprepared for, and lack the self confidence to appreciate and work with. So for my friends, especially considering that there are those who thrive in such free states, a world where liberties and freedoms are suppressed, is, or at least seems to them to be, the path the allows them to be at their most powerful. Since, at least in their minds, being in a free world would mean their doom. They are convinced of their helplessness and inability to achieve on their own. It really is sad because my friends are good smart people. But the way they were raised, the childhood they had robbed them of any accomplishment and sense of achievement and agency. Leaving them feeling insecure and afraid of a world where they have to rely on themselves and their own ability. This rise of socialism in the US and the other thoughts and ideologies that are related to it is a symptom of poor parenting and of babying children for too long.
