Trent Austin Mini-Lesson #70: How do you know when it's THE ONE?
This video is a result of many people asking about how I knew that Coppernicus was "THE ONE" for me. While we all might think that the sound of an instrument is the end-all-be-all determining factor there's a lot about this that isn't necessarily the case. Having owned probably 1,000 horns lately I have found myself always coming back to this earlier Coppernicus model Trumpet (www.austincust...) as it just feels so wonderful in every way!
For me there are many other factors that go into this decision:
1. Ease of articulation For me that's the biggest thing right off the bat. If I have issues getting a crisp, clean, easy articulation I'll pass on the horn for the most part.
2. Ergonomics of horn... if it's too light, too heavy, or doesn't "feel right" in the hand I'll pass
3. Valves and valve action: super important (they are the machine of the horn afterall).
4. Ease of flexibility on the horn (especially with bends).
There's more in this video I hope you'll enjoy it.

Interesting. I got one of your 2RL horns 2 years ago as a beginning "comeback" player. I've been practicing relentlessly with it, and got some lessons, and now I'd call myself an intermediate player. I've worn through the silver plating on some of the contact points. The horn I had before, and still have, is an old Holton Collegiate.I like most things about the 2RL more than the Holton, but I recently practiced the Holton again for a week, and found it seems to have a richer sound in the high range than the 2RL. Back when I bought the 2RL, I couldn't even get that high to have noticed it. I think when you are looking at something inches in front of your face every day for hours per day, sometimes just a change of scenery is nice, and maybe there isn't or shouldn't be a "the one" for any player.

Thanks, Trent! This is great insight from a real pro. I've been on a trumpet safari for a year...and I'm still looking for "the horn". I never thought about playing soft to see where the horn wants to go naturally! Currently, I'm auditioning two Stomvis (S3BB and VRII Lightweight) and have a Shires CVLA-L in the works for the last 7 months.

Great video! My biggest problem is in the rings when holding the horn. The vast majority of trumpets are designed with cookie cutter ring sizes, so my left hand is never comfortable holding it.

Thanks for watching! Any custom maker should be able to accommodate your needs for ergonomic comfort! I think that it's something most people say "I'll get used to it". You wouldn't do that with a tailored suit...! It has to feel right to sound right IMHO.
