I just bought the new Yamaha and I am loving it. It’s going to be my ‘jazz’ horn, while my Bach 37RL will be my ‘concert band’ horn.

Thanks Trent, for your awesome comparisons! Meanwhile I have the feeling, that the YAMAHA (maybe all types from them) are the most linear balanced trumpets of the main brands. I would compare this with a very linear transmitting characteristic of HiFi amplifires. But for me seems that the price for this, that they have to pay is personality in the sound dimension (by the way, I think one can observe this also at the YAMAHA pianos). The Schilkes sound varies a little bit more accross the whole range (octaves), but not much differece to the YAMAHA. Thruogh your videos, I got the impression, that the sounds and the personalities of the Adams and the Schagerls are acting on a higher level, maybe as one compares Steinway pianos with the YAMAHA pianos. Myself, I play an old ytr-6320s, but modified by JBS in Germany (Stuttgart): There's added a mouthpiece receiver, the lead pipe is fixed stiffer and with more weight to the valve block, the meterial of the bell is compressed and it's changed to a tuning bell. The results are better slotting, brighter sound and all in all more lead playing quality.

I like that Yamaha. They both sound great. Sounds like the Yamaha slots a little firmer and has a more consistent sound across the range and dynamic range of the horn. That’s something I tend to prefer in a horn. Would love to hear that Excalibur compared to a straight A5 or Benge or Besson
@austincustom5 жыл бұрын
I think we have a FB video of the Excalibur versus the Besson. I'll search the archives and re-post to YT if that's the case.

Never been a Schilke fan and this confirmed it. The Yamaha soumds better generally to me - but wondered about its low range - seemed not resonant or full - hard to tell.

Trent. Based on my limited knowledge of both horns, a better comparison would be the Schilke B6 and the Shew as both are a step bore instrument. The Yam is over $600 less than the Schilke and comes with a case.

Those are two badass horns. Two different personalities and honestly I can’t decide. The Yamaha is so creamy but the Schilke is so pure. I’d keep both. Damn.
@thomasherrera65875 жыл бұрын
Both sound great in your hands! I would say the Yamaha Shew sounds a bit richer, more compact. The Schilke is definitely brighter.

I don't know if I wrote before but like the Bobby Shew horn better. The sound is a little rounder. The Schilke has a little more edge than I like. You played both of the horns well in all the areas of playing. But from this comparison, I would buy the Bobby Shew horn.

Nice review man! I'm a B1 player myself. Got a lovely 2004 in gold plate that is my main horn. I recently tried the new Shew along with the the 6335RC, (have you reviewed that yet?). The Shew is the closet yet to my B1, I thought the RC was like a really good Bach 37. For me, the Shew just doesn't have enough personality. I think I'd get weary of the Shew sound quite quickly, kinda like the Strad Commercial range. I was interested in the RC and the Shew V3 so that I had a very usable backup to the B1 should the worst happen and to be honest I don't think either of the new Yamaha tpts can do much better than my current early 80's Strad 25*. I think yamaha have done great with the new issues but ultimately they left a bit of personality out of the ingredients. Schilke B1 for me! I wish I could affors a B1L too!

I own a Schilke so I wanted that horn to be the winner here, but I really think the Yam sounded better.

The Yamaha sounds great, but there is just something about a Schilke that just pops for me!
@alexanderkuttler42285 жыл бұрын
Well i think they both Sound really good but the i think the Yamaha sounds some Kind of Standard . There is something to the Schilke which sounds really nice altough it seems that you're fightin the Schilke a bit
@jean-pierredevent9705 жыл бұрын
I don't know these instruments so perhaps I am completely wrong. The Yamaha looks nicer, sounds more compact, like it's heavier in weight, the tone is purer but has less high overtones. (good for S.O. ?) The Schilke is more traditional open, brightly resonating but still not shrill so I prefer it's tone here but perhaps in other situations it would be different.

@stevenhogenson48805 жыл бұрын
The Yamaha by far. Better core, better projection, more consistent across all registers. The Schilke wasn't even close. Just sounds thin and tinny.
@chasefreak Жыл бұрын
The Shew Yamaha is a copy of a Schilke B7 model-M bore L yellow brass bell...of course Mr. Schilke collaborated w Yamaha in Japan. The B1 is much more open b/c even though it starts at a .460 it expands to a .468 with a L bell...it was Mr. Schilke's "personal" model and the guide from which all future Bb Schilke models would be based (save the S series which were Laskey's brain children) ...a better comparison would be a B6 or B7 model(s)
