5:17 the incoming and outgoing message tape placement changes from model to model and brand to brand. Most of the ones I have seen from the late 80s and mid 90s have the message for the caller on the left, and the recording side on the right.

I've been wanting an 80's tape based answering machine since I was a kid. I am hoping I will be able to get a working one fairly cheap!

This thing is so comically gigantic it is like something out of a old 1970's detective show where they are tracking down a spy and the bad guy has this in their house monitoring people.
