Pā Rōpata McGowan has been a teacher of rongoā Māori for more than 30 years and was awarded the Loder Cup and a Queen's medal for his service to Māori and conservation.
His presentation ‘Tutu/Tupaakihi - Heal the people, heal the whenua’ explores: Tutu/Tupaakihi (Coriaria arborea) is a well known and much used as a rongoā for us, but how many realise that the first purpose of Tutu/Tupaakihi, like most rakau used for rongoā, is to heal the whenua? Our health/wellness depends on the wellness of the whenua. Ka ora te whenua, ka ora te tangata.
