It's also the fact that he doesn't seem to have much chemistry with the actors he shares screen with. The Foreigner worked because he was alone most of the movie.

Railroad Tigers is actually good. As a comedy it's not that very funny, but it's not bad and the comedy format makes the characters likeable, real people who find humour in everyday situations and fail a lot like everyone does. The final fight sequence, whilst it has a running gag, and a few jokes, is legitimately dramatic. You don't get frustrated by failings, but instead it gets really very sad when Tigers keep dying one after another, and the situation becomes completely hopeless. The movie can actually make the viewer believe they are all going to die for nothing, and it's something action movies usually fail to achieve when they try.

There are problems that piss off some enthusiasts like tanks always going on fire at the rear etc. but the artillery barrage scenes are absolutely horrific while very realistic, and what we see afterwards is that those who survived are broken for life. Deaf, scared, shaking without control even weeks or months later. And there's a horrible scene when a soldier is going to bayonet charge is hit by shards from artillery shell everywhere, and he wakes up many hours later stranded in the wasteland, covered in his own blood, not really knowing what he is doing there, and only able to move one hand. Then he's found with a lone paramedic but she's too weak to move him. And then there's a surgery scene when a soldier curses in agony of pain because they have no anaesthetics and they cut him and remove many bullets while he's still conscious, and his main concern is that they cut his boots and he would have to walk bare foot again.

Now he's either making something dark, brooding and almost depressing and when he's trying to make something funny, he makes it flat-out childish. And just like Stallone, he's less interested in giving people what they want and more about jump-starting the careers of younger actors. If Jackie's getting too old for kung-fu, maybe he should use more guns. Perhaps a Chinese copy of Lethal Weapon starring him and Chow-Yun Fat. Have John Woo direct it. I'd watch that!

Hmm, regarding Jackie Chan's more drama based outings. I've always thought Shinjuku Incident (2009) was what made me think that Jackie maybe has a future in drama driven movies. But it's unfortunate that he was never provided opportunities to explore more in that direction.

You reminded me of the first movie I saw a somehow different Jackie… playing a selfish bastard that redeems himself in the most selfless way possible. Little big soldier will always be one of my favorites, and as far as I’m concerned, one of first movies that showed the intention of Jackie of becoming something more. Regreftully… that is not solely on Jackie’s side if it works or not. :( That said… waiting part 2 eagerly!!! The insight of your videos is always refreshing. :)

Jackie Chan also symbolises the changing nature of the film industry. He was there when Hong Kong cinema was some of the best in the world.

Never. We may say he doesn't command the same box office numbers or does the most exciting films. But he's reached that peak where you can say he's one of the greats. International and intergenerational icon. The likes of which I wonder if we'll see again.

I will say, railroad tigers was genuinely a fun watch. I saw it a few weeks back, and it really does show what Jackie can do outside of just his regular shtick of only adding highly executed fight scenes into his movies. It's my h more laid back, and like so many have pointed out, it's because he's had such a long career filled with bangers after bangers, each almost re defining kung fu flicks, or actions flicks he's at an age where that's just not possible for him to physically keep up anymore. I think the issue is it's less about him not being good enough or capable enough for solid acting, it's more the fact reviewers and consumers all around still expect the classic Jackie Chan combat flair. I don't think his careers gone down hill as much as people say, just that it's not quite in the same path it once took as many other 80s and 90s action stars.

To this day, one of my favorite Jackie Chan movies is Shinjuku Incident. A movie where there wasn't any sort of action sequences we'd come to expect from Jackie. At first it was a letdown, but half way through the movie I started to realize that he was as competent at acting as he was at throwing kicks and being funny. It was really refreshing at the time and completely changed how I view this actor.

He will NEVER be a "has been". Whether he continues in film has very little to do with him as a successful person and he remains relavent. Jackie is 68 years old & he doesn't need the money. Jackie continues to make movies because that's what he loves to do. Surprise ...surprise. He actually IS a talented & accomplished actor .

I'm not sure if part 2 is going to get into his very pro CCP stance. This does not make him a popular celebrity especially in Hong Kong where he was born. Maybe his international audience doesn't care about his political views but could have consequences in the Asian film market. It could all be Jackie knows where his bread is buttered and he plays along so that he can still get his movies made and not get censored by the CCP.

The first time I really thought to myself "damn...this guy can actually act" when watching Jackie was (hear me out) the Karate Kid remake. There is one scene in particular in that movie that really surprised me with his ability to deliver raw emotion. I must admit that before that I previously just thought of him as an action star that acts in movies rather than an actor who does action scenes if that makes sense. oh and I liked the foreigner and dragonblade out of all the movies hes done in the past ten years

I think let's not forget that Hong Kong, a place where he was once respected, now practically hates him due to his pro-CCP views. That and his personal troubles went full tabloids and affected his career. He kinda went the same career faltering as Tom Cruise, but unlike Chan, Cruise always tries to reinvent himself to mold into the kind of movie he and his audiences would want to see. That's practically why his latest Mission: Impossible movies, Edge of Tomorrow, American Made, and more recently, Top Gun: Maverick were instant blockbuster classics. Chan does not have that allure he once had. He practically peaked early with his crazy stunts and that's where his appeal was waning.

Jackie Chan's contributed so much to cinema behind the camera and in front and even though there are some movies which are total misfires there's are a lot that work and which come together quite nicely to give us a truly cinematic experience, I try to watch all of his movies that I can and I enjoy most of them but yes there have been some terrible one's.

i usually see people invoking his name as a director like "they should make this anime into a movie with jackie chan directing" because really Jackie Chan the actor wouldn't have been as great if the coreography and cinematography wasn't as good, i wish he was directing movies with newer actors, instead of only acting and not directing, but at least a bunch of people who worked with him behind the camera are making good movies now, like shang chi

Jackie can't move to the next step until he removes himself from the action. No matter what movie he does, he feels like it still needs some action because that where he excels at and can be used as a scape goat. "That movie wasn't great but Jackie still got it with the action scene". If he allows himself to play a role without action, he can remove himself of the action stigma and let people judge him entirely on performance.

I saw 1911 a while ago, Chan’s performance was one of the few highlights (the other two being the actors of Sun Yat-Sen and Yuan Shikai) of an otherwise very messy film. I’m surprised the Police Story reboot seems to have such a gritty tone too.

Jackie Chan should do more dramas, he's a decent actor and still has screen presence of an "everyman" charisma that is actually somewhat lacking in Chinese cinema.
@stuntmonkey002 жыл бұрын
Me and alot of people can't not see him as a CCP mouthpiece. Yes, it has nothing to do with his art, but it was everything to do with ticket sales. Classic Jackie is tied to the good memories of Hong Kong and how it used to be before China started strangling it to death. "Jackie Chan" is supposed to be fun and Cantonese. Jackie Chan being serious and acting in Mandarin just breaks the immersion and makes you think of his short comings and how crappy everything the CCP is making everything now.

Out of the films you discuss in this video, the only one I’ve seen is Railroad Tigers. I enjoyed it, but found it hard to follow at times. I think Jackie’s movies have always been inconsistent, from the very beginning. For example, Fearless Hyena is a much worse movie than Snake in Eagle’s Shadow. City Hunter wasn’t very good, nor was Mr Nice Guy. But they all had good action scenes to redeem them. Now that Jackie’s older, it’s natural that he has to rely on acting more than action, but I believe he’s capable of the transition if given a quality script and director. I think it would be wonderful to see him in non-action roles, but he could also update earlier stories - at this point in his career, he’d make a great Wong Kei Ying!
