Once you’re forced to present a sketchbook weekly you sorta learn since you get points taken off if it’s not neat and effort isn’t shown... kind of a plug but I started out with H O R R I B L E line art like 2 weeks ago but recently my professor teached me how to be confident in my line art and I never looked back, it’s amazing how many answers a professional artist has... it’s overwhelming. Speedpaints on my channel for reference to whatever the f*ck I’m talking about. Still got allot to learn but I’m sure as hell trying! 🦆

mortem that’s what a sketchbook is meant to be. A book filled with sketches and ideas, as nice as her book is it’s more just a collection of pretty pictures. Any mistakes are covered up and every page looks planned out. More of a portfolio than a sketchbook. Guarantee she has another book where all her ideas are planned and sketched out, she needs to show that as well

@@Georgiana216 i don't agree. practice goes a long way; she could never have made something like this if she didn't put in the time. but talent is also a component here; this girl shows a level of maturity and skill in her work that most people don't achieve until adulthood. of course, that's not to discourage anyone; the average person could reach this level of skill if they put in the work -- but the biggest difference would be the timeline.

Joshua Axelio yeah you’re both right. She would have never created this wonderful piece without hard work and I didn’t wanted to imply that she didn’t have to work for it with my comment. Its not practice its iq, people arent intrested in questioning things they think just by drawing over and over again they'll get better not how it works irl. They dont realize that professionals actually understand what they draw and study the material, so it is partially talent as it requires you to be able to gather knowdgele and be smart enough to apply. Such as learning botany, architecture, to futhur your technical skills.

Scarlet I made a list of what skills I needed to show, materials to use and what subject matter to include but only referred to it when I didn’t know what to draw/towards the end when I had a few gaps. If this is considered pre-planning then yes, it’s pre-planned! Otherwise, I just went straight into the pages without a particular idea of how they would turn out. As for informing viewers their books don’t need to look like this, I agree and I’ll do that in future.

@@Meppity That is definitely pre-planned. I think most people don't even fathom making a list like that and what it might include. It would be helpful to people if you shared that list! Also, most people don't know you did that, so they can feel like they could never do something like that (assuming everything came out totally freely without guidelines).

@@samaraisnt Is it just me or does it sound kinda rude? She don't have to share or tell anything just because it could be helpful for others... There's no short cut in art, it's a steady developement of skills and the more you do by yourself the better you get. And to be honest, I thought it's common sense that you write down a few things you want in your portfolio when you try to apply at an art school so no need to adress it as an "unfair" pre-planned scetchbook :)

Hey, CalArts Character Animation grad here, your distorted figures and clean shapes with your color blocking is really sharp! (I started in 2009, graduated 2017) It's great to see your thought process and growth. You do some great shape break downs on the car with the negative space. I'm sure as you've studied many teachers pull around different schools of thought. Your hands and ball structures show your level of design and silhouette work with gestures. Over time when you learn different animation principles a bit at a time you can reinforce these concepts. Your peacocks are a ton of fun to look through with the shapes, feather details, and more. I like too the house drawing and reinterpretation with block shapes and colors. That will be useful for adapting to many shows or BGs in your films as you explore yourself. CalArts is a ton of fun, I hope you keep up the fun even though there's a lot of pressure involved in many directions. (It can get easily overwhelming for me to take like 10-11 classes since my 1st year was blocked out with 7-8 required classes. A lot of concepts I had to take breaks for multiple years to digest and try to make the most out of my time in school since I was quickly burning out. Some people don't depending on their work ethics / drive / balance.) I'm not entirely sure if you're just starting out either in school (it's about that time for school orientation huh?), but I might drop by campus during CalArts Game Makers meetings. I hope to keep in touch, thanks for posting up your work. You'll for sure go far with continuous study, good pacing, self forgiveness, humility, and a genuine love for life. (Oh, here's a little plug to my game I'm working on: www.breakneckemergence.com . I do the music and art with a programmer who made it in C++! I hope it gives you an idea of what I do.)

Scarlet Hi thanks! I already replied to another of your comments treating as if I planned my sketchbook being fact. I actually didn’t plan it in the way you’re imagining, I was just going about it page by page!! The aesthetics and colour palette grew organically from the materials I had, subjects I drew and my underlying style. As for covering pages up, I only covered two, any other mistakes utilised post-its but as shown in the video, I’m very happy to show the errors underneath. I agree and want to be sure people understand that their sketchbooks don’t have to look a certain way at all! Sketchbooks can look however you want but that’s the same for me - I’m a “real working artist” and this is what my sketchbooks look like; please don’t dismiss that and act as if your interpretation of how I work is fact.

@@AlottaBoulchit What they`re referring to is that this is what you could call a showcase sketchbook compared to a drafting sketchbook. this is about showcasing your skills and less about actually practicing. A drafting sketchbook is a lot loser and way les refined because it`s about concept development and busywork. they are not supposed to be pretty so you get to fuck around freely without the fear of ruining a book. Most artists have both. They`re only pointing this out to make sure that people understand that this isn`t the level your mindless doodles have to have. this is polished work so don`t feel bad if your casual sketchbook doesn`t look like it`s on this level.

Hi, Im not Anya, but I think I can help, the only way to learn how to draw buildings, environments, concepts, landscapes, etc is redrawing them. Go to Pinterest and redraw all concept arts and landscapes that you can, if u do that, you will get the "vibe" that backgrounds have in Animation. Another useful tip is, when drawing backgrounds, think outside the box: houses dont need to be straight as a Cube, cars dont need to have wheels, I mean, play with shapes and colors! AND PLEASE, DO A LOT OBSERVATIONAL DRAWINGS, GO OUTDOORS AND DRAW ALL THE BUILDINGS YOU CAN!! good luck!!
@emilyclayton2493
@emilyclayton2493 5 жыл бұрын
obviously practicing is a big one lol, but for buildings, I would suggest variety (maybe try a skyscraper and then a cabin instead of just doing tons of skyscrapers and getting tired of them, for example) and definitely sketch it out with pencil first, because all those lines are hard to get right and keep straight if you just start with ink. backgrounds are super hard for me too so I won't try to help with that lol

I definitely think learning things all about perspective, vanishing points, angles, colour theory, accuracy versus creativity (for example sometimes very slight imperfections make it much more visually appealing etc) are super useful to learn. Practising a large variety of landscapes is very useful, I found the book "perspective made easy" helped me kickstart the technical stuff, but definitely look around and keep bringing in knowledge and inspiration from around you until you feel comfortable with your final process/ vision. I also found out plenty of background artists on twitter like Steve Lowtwait post tons of useful info on how to bring a background from sketch to finish. Sorry for the novel, I'm also still new and learning about stuff like this, but I hope this helps!! ^_^

I’m a freshman in high school too! I’ve been watching loads of sketch book tours in hopes of finding some nice tips for creating a great looking sketch book so that when it comes time to my Junior and Senior years for sketch books, they’ll come easier to me and I won’t second guess myself quite as much. I’ve been trying new mediums out as well and I’m having loads of fun! If you find any neat tips would you mind sharing?

Not sure where you lived while growing up in the UK but I relate to almost all. The noisy hedgehogs, sheep’s for neighbours, beautiful Tudor and red brick architecture, Random things with my boarding house mates picturesque countryside walks, beautiful churches with steeples (in fact one of my local ones was named St. John’s too, which I think is a fairly common name anyway), fox and badger hunting on horseback with tons of beagles, huge admiration for a sport even though you were never the best at it (mine was rowing) and just so so sooo many other things. Watching this makes me want to start a sketchbook of my own, but I’m neither very talented or good at sketching.

your art is so good hhhhhh. sketchbook tours always motivate me to keep drawing cause i can see what my art can eventually become. art isn't about pure talent, it's about lots and lots of practice! and that's why it motivates me, cause i always think about how much work actually goes into a single sketchbook.
