While I have issues with the Church, I am grateful that its patronage enabled so many great artists to create the masterpieces we still admire. I remember seeing the Michelangelo sculpture of the Pieta, and being awestruck at how he manipulated the physiology of the two figures in order to, at first, look totally realistic, but then noticing that Mary was all out of proportion to the figure of Christ. Amazing. It was like 'this shouldn't work, but it really does'. And then there's the dome of Santa Maria del Fiore by Brunelleschi in Florence. Again; it was something that shouldn't have worked, and yet he figured out a way to make it so. What a flowering of art, science, philosophy, literature and architecture the Renaissance was!

I agree 100%! It's just amazing how they were able to create things in ways never thought of before!
