Jill Duggar Dillard is shedding light on where things stand with her and her parents amid continued "family drama." The former "Counting On" star and her husband Derick Dillard exclusively spoke to Access Hollywood about her new memoir "Counting the Cost" and shared an update on her situation with mom Michelle Duggar and dad Jim Bob Duggar. "With my dad, we mostly see him at weddings, funerals, and then sometimes a few other events here and there. But yeah, it's complicated," she said. "We try to not involve my mom in too much of it. We really don't have a whole lot of conversations at this point in our relationship with my family about the whole family drama situation, because we feel like we have kind of just had to make our own decisions and realize that you can't change people." "Counting the Cost" is available now wherever books are sold.

Let's just take a moment to appreciate the calm, respectful way Derek "eased" his wife out of this authoritarian abuse! We need to remember that Derek was a very young man when he married Jill. Sometimes young people, especially males, can be very aggressive whenever they feel abused or taken advantage of. I admire the way that this young man gracefully handled himself and protected his wife. This couple has put in a great deal of hard work to make sure that they are mentally healthy and putting appropriate boundaries in place. They make a fantastic team and I am praying and cheering them on.

Honoring! - She’s doing a great job of honoring. Honoring doesn’t mean letting abuse continue. She did not choose to grow up in the spotlight. It was a job she couldn’t contract out of as a child. I think she feels the need to be vocal about things that aren’t right. Jill DESERVES to be treated as a person with valid thoughts and feelings, and to be understood. It seems that this has not been part of their family culture. I understand this first hand. It’s difficult for someone who hasn’t lived through this to understand what it’s like to try to be liberated. Psychological abuse is real. And when your parents can’t respect you as an adult, they need to be distanced from your life, just like any other adult would be. You don’t keep taking abuse because they are your parents. That would perpetuate the abuse cycle. Go Jill and Hubby! My husband is also my saving grace.

Why was TLC able to pay MadTV (Jim Bob's production company) and then just expect he'd pay his kids? How is that even legal? They should've set up an account for the kids, and also paid them directly as adults. Also, why didn't TLC give her the contract to sign instead of her Dad giving it to her? All his kids still under his control don't understand how much money they should really be making and how much he's making off them. Again, it's shocking to me that he is able to use his children, legally.

This is a wonderful couple who is living their Christian faith in an authentic way. Jill has really bloomed into an articulate, free thinking woman. Derek is a complete Godsend in her life. He just oozes with patience and support for Jill to become her own woman. Her adult life could have been completely different. Living under the control and restriction of her fathers rules, she easily could have ended up marrying a man commited to the same teachings as her parents and would probably not found freedom. Jim Bob has a distorted concept of what it means to honor and obey your parents. Especially with his older children. When his daughters marry and his sons for that matter, they become one one flesh with their partner in biblical terms. They leave their parents and cleave to their spouse. It is God's will that he no longer governs his daughters lives. Jim Bob should be nothing but proud of Jill for the woman she has become. The only adult child that had brought him shame thus far is his oldest son.

Jill and Derick show so much grace, maturity, and respect during this interview. They deserve a lot of credit for the way they acted and spoke. I am so happy that Jill has removed herself from under her parent's control, especially her father's. It is so beautiful to see that she has found her voice and I love how Derick seems to lovingly support that as evidenced by his behavior and demeanor during this interview and others. I am appalled at her twisted father's inexcusable behavior. It's all so perverted, and to do what he did in the name of God is disgusting. I am so impressed with how far Jill has come emotionally and psychologically in such a short period of time. It is extremely hard to break free of such extreme cult like control. It's so hard to stand on your own and reject the system especially when you have such deep loving relationships involved with her siblings. It breaks my heart to hear about the horrible things that have been done to Jill and her siblings and even Derick. I am especially sorry that she and her sisters were sexually assaulted by her brother and for the other girls who were victimized by him. Having Josh, instead of the girls protected is insult upon injury. I hope that Jill and Derick continue on their healing journey and have a joyful life together. God bless them and their boys.

Jill's accounts of what had transpired was pretty much what most suspected all along. I'm not at all shocked. I do want to point out that since she married and removed herself from her former life style, she's greatly matured and her independence is remarkable. I love how she made clear there is positive and negatives on both her and Derricks upbringing and they choose to engulf in the positive. I'm sure those positives she's incorporated into her children's upbringing but is so much more aware of what her actions does upon her own children. No shocker JimBob implemented that much control over their children. JIMBOB and Michelle purposefully set their children up for failure and manipulated them to rely on him. Basically enslaving them. It breaks my heart ❤️ to see all of them this way. Hopefully Jill will be an inspiration for them and open their eyes.

I do not understand the concept of her father, Jim Bob Duggar, declaring that he loves his children, yet he took/continues to take advantage of them day and night. His tyrannical reign over every aspect of their lives, even after marriage, birth control, telling them how to dress, what to think, where they would live after 18 years old, depriving them of a good college education, robbing them blind for years of their rightly earned money, etc., etc., etc. That is NOT love. That is a frightening, manipulative, controlling CULT. Jinger left that cult and apparently jumped into another. I do hope that Derick and Jill have found a truly healthy and well-balanced Church community and that they continue to heal and enter into the freedom that only Jesus Christ can give.

Exactly! People think that because they got to travel and have expensive weddings (all for content) that she shouldn’t feel owed to some compensation for the commodification of her life and privacy.

I'm glad Derrick lets her talk and platforms her because it's her story. He is such a good husband. I notice her speech patterns and manner of speaking has really changed. This might seem small, but I study this type of thing, so I tend to notice. People will often mirror and mimic language and speech choices of in-groups, so the fact that she is moving away from that and speaks in her own way now, not using the cult jargon and using her own style of inflection shows how much work she has done inside.

God bless you Jill and Derick. Like so many others, I watched the TV series for many years. I always had the gut feeling that "something is off" about Jim Bob. And when I learned about their affiliation with Gothard I knew my instinct was correct. I am a Christian myself...not in name only. the Gospel Message is NOT about - "becoming squeaky clean" (like "Shiny Happy People")....the perversion we're seeing regarding Christianity in today's world surely grieves the God who loves us. All men are free to choose to enter into a relationship with Jesus Christ or not. Whichever choice is made has eternal consequences. God in his love ,extends to us the freedom to do so. It is that relationship that saves us, NOT "rules and regulations."

I had no idea that the production company did not handle the ADULT contracts in an appropriate way (over 18). They wanted a quick sign and JB did not want the "kids" to be knowledgeable about it either. He caused this entire mess with Jill and Derrick. All the adults should have had representation, and reading the entire contract should have been required reading for all. The minors should have been told about how much the parents were putting back for them, and that they will have control over their own finances and participation in the future.

Jill, you are not alone with this. My father was a lot like yours. Not a cult but strict strict rules oh my goodness. We were a family of 4 girls and suffered a lot of rules because we were girls. He wouldn’t let us date at all or even look at boys. Our dress rules were like yours. Believe me he didn’t believe in “sparing the rod”. We weren’t home schooled so we suffered humiliation in school. I am happy to say that all of us finally were able to date when we were grown and we married great guys. All 4 of us broke loose from his rules and made sure that our children were not treated like we were. You have done the right thing and you have paid the ultimate price by loosing many of your family.

You broke free from discipline? There’s a difference between a boy & a girl… We just have to be courageous in this hour. I don’t see the people with yoga pants hiding. The 1st thing boys do when they want to be like a girl is put on a dress. We really need to get delivered from our own selfish ways and thank God for parents who set rules & boundaries in place for our safety. Please stop whining and start thanking God. There are so many kids that would’ve love your life.
