Accidental Shakarian pre-Shakarian? // Shepard x Garrus moments in ME1/ME2

Some (accidental?) Shakarian moments in ME1/ME2 before the Garrus romance subplot could even start. Basically just Shakarian being best friends/caring for each other beyond "jUsT fRiEnDsHiP" (whatever the hell that means, idk, im ace)/some innuendo because we're all grownups with grownup sense of humor right?

See, the reason so many of these exist is because their relationship plays like a slowburn romance fic. Garrus is everyone's friend, male shep or fem Shep. But then, in 2, fem Shep can take a step toward something more, something sexual initially. It's awkward, they both obsess over getting it right so not to ruin things, and bumble into it all. When they actually end up going ahead with it, it stops being just sex. Garrus respects Shepard, cares for her, and his life spiraling into shit when she dies means her bringing him back into the crew gives him another shot at getting things right. The idea of ruining their friendship, of losing her again, is terrifying. Likewise, Shepard cares for him, and likely sought a similar need of stability with him. He's reliable, trustworthy, and clearly cares for her more than he dares admit when they're alone in her quarters. By the time 3 rolls around, they've had an entire year to overthink and likely a few nights more together before Shepard turns herself in. When they reunite, those feelings can return. And, given they still trust and care for eachother, they can end up in love. See? He's honestly a pretty adorable romance, the foundation is there from the start.

I just noticed that Garrus’ voice gets deeper as time goes on. In ME1, he was a fresh faced C-Sec officer, eager to hunt down the baddies. And then in ME2 and 3, he’s seen some things and is now more mature. Love the voice actor xD

It's moments like these that make me wish Garrus had more ship dialogue in ME2. Don't get me wrong, he's great and can make a very small number of conversations go a long way, but this is the guy with hands down one of the best LI arcs in ME3 and went feet first into hell with you multiple times in ME1. Shepard's always been able to probe conversation out of him and yet he's one of the quietest squadmates in the second game. Thanks definitely go to ME3 that he becomes one of your main sources of emotional support even without the romance (to the point where they had to pull out the stops so that the romance could pop against the platonic stuff), but I still felt pretty cheated with his ME2 ship dialogue.

I've head cannoned Garrus caught feeling way back in ME 1 after you do is little "loyalty" mission where you track down the one doctor. His interactions with Shep just like seemed to change, there was just a little something more behind his words

I generally romance Liara when I play through the ME trilogy, but even then, Garrus is an absolute soulmate. One of the very few to have Shep's back no questions asked in all three games. May not be erotic love, but that doesn't make it any less valuable. His "on your feet" speech after Thessia and promise to meet at the bar in heaven near the end always make me choke up. Everyone deserves a friend like Garrus.

Because Male Shep doesn't get the same response, so it's a gender specific line, which kind of indicates he's attempting to flirt, or at least is thinking about women and romance far more when he's speaking But yeah, Garrus very probably had a crush on Shepard. But she's older than him by 4 years, and more accomplished than him when they first meet, and she's an alien, which is not what he was looking for in a girlfriend. Also, he's awkward as hell, and not very in touch with his own emotions/wants. Shepard is either the perfect turian girl (paragon), or a perfect badass (renegade) and both are super appealing. But he won't think too deeply about it or admit it to himself because that would get in the way of the mission.
