It is though. A pyramid scheme doesn't sell you stuff, it's illegal to set up one. MLM is legal because you have an actual product that you sell. Doesn't mean it's any better or more ethical though, they're still scams. Legal scams, though.

It really is! A very very good key point he did bring up in his video is “recruitment bonuses”. It’s actually one of the key things the FTC looks for in differentiating between a legit business and a pyramid scheme. That as well as high start up costs, lengthy confusing contracts, a requirement to purchase and hold an inventory, etc. If any of you are weary about any network marketing opportunity you really need to look at two things. Who you are getting involved with and credible sources. I.E. are those people who they say they are, can they help you and are they willing to. And secondly if the FTC and the better business bureau has a bad track record with them stay away. Those two things can be taken into account with any business venture. Definitely loved the video!

Man as someone who briefly got sucked into a pyramid scheme, this hits home hard. I even said it was a pyramid scheme at the first meetup (they drew a pyramid just like in this sketch) and still got talked into it. Looking back I have no idea how I could've been so dumb.
@Fishbro
@Fishbro 2 жыл бұрын
Cause it's not a pyramid scheme but a direct sales company. Same with corporate ladder being a pyramid it's all hierarchy. The pyramid scheme begins when they convince you to do your own product. No good drug dealer does their own product, let alone any business owner. MLM is a direct sales operation prone to pyramid scheming

My best friend one time got into MLM. He met this lady at a target who said he would be like a tech guy at their company (he’s a comp-sci major). So he goes to the first interview at Panera, and the lady hands him a book to read and one of the diagrams was literally in the shape of a pyramid. 3 more interviews ensued and eventually he went to a group meeting at this fancy hotel (there were at least 70 people at that meeting). He’s a smart guy and he knew what he was getting into from the start and I asked, “yo why do you keep going?”. He told me that the lady would always pay for his food and seltzer, and at that group meeting he stole a tissue box. So I guess that’s the only upside to MLM😂😂 Update: This is 2 years later... he went to a few more, they gave him panera bread gift cards. As soon as they did that he quit lmaoo. He's got a good $80 worth in gift cards, honestly it's worth it just for that

lol. I did the same thing with the MLM I joined in high school. They paid for my lunch, and it was probably one of the most chaotic and unbelievable experiences I've ever had. I'm talking about the person training us, teaching us to put our foot in people's doorway when they try to close the door on us chaotic, with a live example. I stayed until they stopped paying for food, I never paid for the uniforms they said would be coming, and after the first official day, I quit.

I remember I attended one of those meetings for some laughs, first off, the boss guy told my friend that he should wear a tie before entering the room like he knew what the fuck. Just cringe... It was all cool until the boss guy who was speaking to us all said "I drive a La Ferrari (nearly a million dollar super car) and life is so good blah blah and it's in the parking lot"...so I said tell me exactly where it is parked! He's like "haha young man, be patient you'll have yours in a few months." I kept hesitating and wanted to know where he exactly parked his so called Ferrari so I could legit believe he really is that rich. They asked security to kick me out of property. I wasn't even allowed to go in the parking lot of the building and ALL the client's cars were parked outside on the street. As I was escorted out, I shouted y'all being scammed! Nearly half the people in the room walked out with me. I did something good that day. Pieces of shits that take advantage of simple people.

I absolutely love the cult-stuff. I had a friend who was in ACN (MLM) and tried to recruit me. I politely declined, but he continued to pester me for weeks. I finally agreed to join a meeting on the condition that I was free to leave once the meeting finished, and never hear anything about it again. He accepted, as he was convinced that the meeting would open my eyes, convert and sign up. It interesting to say the least. The (regional) leader was a middle aged man, the rest were young, naive men that genuinly thought they got the recipe to get rich without too much of an effort. Everyone wanted the same, looked the same and talked the same way. The leader was full of obvious BS, but they didn't question him. They just sat there awstruck by his apparent success and by the promise that they too could soon afford all the extravagant stuff he was bragging about having, and then finally be successfull and happy. 'Cult' is by far the best word I have to describe it.

This happened to me before. I had a dude who approached like a friend for months and slowly started bringing up how I could be doing more with business. They started trying to make me turn me against others for not being self starters. I noticed eventually that they never would mention what the actual job or company was for a long time. I got into an initiation ceremony thing and they finally mentioned Amway. I looked it up and found quickly that it was an MLM (pyrimid scheme). Thankfully got out but it was sucky to realize the person who acted like a friend was all about business.

It is a funny video and it is pointing it out correctly: It IS a pyrimid sceme NOT because of the shape of a pyramid (stupid to think it is that simple), BUT because of only making money on the signup fees instead of making money on the sale of relevant products. That is why network marketing is legal and pyramid scemes are not... (I am not in network marketing, but studied that in college)

Sounds like Market America. Was in job orientation training when the trainer drew a triangle and said what does this business model look like. Got pissed and fired me when i said well it looks like a pretty basic pyramid scheme
@VortexMagus
@VortexMagus 3 жыл бұрын
multi-level marketing is pretty much identical to a pyramid scheme. Instead of selling signup fees they just price up their products and add commission-based kickbacks to everyone up the ladder. It's just an accounting trick to get around FBI definitions of a pyramid scheme while still maintaining the same structure. The same people get the same amount of money as a pyramid scheme. It's just how the money written on the paper is a little bit different.
@caesarschutz1430
@caesarschutz1430 3 жыл бұрын
@@VortexMagus That sounds correct, but it is not: If more then 50% of sales are made off the recruits themselves, it gets in the direction of becoming a pyramid sceme. And that's illegal. Even if they are selling real products it is illegal. But if it is the opposite, e.g. if 9 of 10 customers are not inside the comlany and are only customers, it is a legit business.

My college roommate called me out of the blue about a year after he graduated and he had gotten into one of these things, I think it was "Quikstar". Anyway he kept asking me to come to a meeting about an hour away, but he never would tell me what it was about, so I never went. Another time, one of my wife's college friends wanted to "grab coffee" to talk about retiring early. I immediately knew what was up and told her we should not go, but she wanted to "help him out", so we went, saying we would not buy anything or sign up for anything, but he could "practice" on us - what a waste of both of our time.
