A Portland woman thought she caught a grand theft auto on surveillance camera, but it turned out to be one crazy mix-up. Erin Hatzi reported her 2001 red Subaru stolen and her home security camera confirmed that someone she didn't know, indeed, took the car. She never expected that a day later the car would be returned with an apology note and $30. The note read, in part: "Hello, So sorry I stole your car. I sent my friend with my key to pick up my red Subaru and she came back with your car." #InsideEdition

this same kind of thing happened to me and a friend like 5 years ago, we were going home from mcdonald’s after stopping to eat after a middle school dance. she and i finished first so we went outside while everyone else finished. when they walked out we ran to a car and opened the doors. my friend had almost gotten all the way into the car when we both yelled “this isn’t our car!!!!” and we ran to what was actually our car. they were the same exact car, but it was dark out so you couldn’t tell the color. it’s definitely still laughed at today 😂

This happened to me a few weeks ago. 2 exactly identical models were parked just a few spots away, and I'm not sure if their car was unlocked or my key unlocked that one too, but I opened the door and went "what the hell happened to the passenger seat while I was gone? I left for 10 minutes?" Then immediately realized "ooooohhhh, this isn't my car, I don't smoke cigarettes and they're everywhere in this one".

This happened to me a thousand years ago. I was on the stables and rode my white horse, but noticed that it didn't have any moles on its back as soon as I reached halfway towards my destination (I was going to relocate my horse into a new stable). I got off the horse and walked it back to the stables and apologized to the caretaker and paid him copper coins for compensation

that happened to me a few years ago. i used to own a black nissan sentra, i went to wendys one night and after i paid for my salad i went back to where i parked my car, unlocked the door jumped in and instantly realized i was in the wrong damn car, i jumped out and realized my car was parked right next to the identical black sentra i was just in. i went back into the restaurant found the owner of the other sentra and informed her i was just in her car. we went back into the lot together and i used my key to open her car door, she was shocked. weirdly enough her key could not open my car door. go figure. i gave her my number so she knew who to call in case she got locked out of her car, we laughed and bacame friends.

Reminds me of a man who back in the day broke into our cabin. Only to find out, he was lost and nearly frozen to death. The man left a note explaining why he broke in and a number to reach him to pay for the damages and food he ate. My old man, told the man to not worry about it. Glad he was okay and actually left a note.

It's any older car. When I was little we were at the mall. My mom went to get in the car (GMC Jimmy), the door key opened the door, but the engine key didn't work. Looked around and it was someone elses car. They used to use two separate keys back then so if it did happen, the chances of having the engine key were very slim. Also, there isn't infinite key combinations options, it's bound to happen.

This still works on some new cars too. My mom went grocery shopping in her 2016 Ford escape and loaded all her groceries in the back, got in the driver's seat and realized she was too close to the wheel, looked up and saw things hanging from the mirror and went "wtf", got out and realized she had parked 2 cars over lmao. She had to unload all the groceries back into the cart and put them in her vehicle then waited for the person to come back so they didn't think someone riffled through their stuff on purpose.

The EXACT same thing happened to me one time but I had a Chrysler. On our lunch break at work, I gave my girlfriend my keys, told her to take my car to the beer distributor to grab a bunch of stuff for a party that night. She came back, said everything was in the back seat and gave me my keys. When 4 o'clock came and I went to my car to leave, there was nothing in it. I called her and she came out to the parking lot, looked around and could not figure out what happened. I leave work and about 30 minutes later I get a call from her. Some guy in the building put out an email stating he "was pretty sure it wasn't his birthday" but went out to his car and found a bunch of alcohol in the back seat. Does anyone know anything about it??? I about died!! Anyway, here we both had the exact same car in the exact same color with my key operating both cars locks & ignition!!!! That is CRAZY to me. He also got the whole story that his car was driven to the local beer distributor during lunch break!😄😂🤣 The worst part: when I called my friend & she came out to my car, she never once realized my car wasn't in the spot she parked "my car" in when she drove it??? And when she looked in the car to see nothing was there, she didn't realize that the interior was a different color than the one of the car she put the alcohol in??? Yea!

When she was driving home from work she noticed items in the car that didn't belong to her. Upon getting home she said something to her father. Upon investigating he noticed the sticker on the license plate had the wrong date. Checking the registration revealed it wasn't hers. They contacted the police department who assisted in tracking down the owners. Turns out that both cars had the same key. Everyone understood the situation and the matter was dropped.

I almost did the same thing. Got into a blue Subaru that looked just like mine. The lock felt funny but I didn't realize it wasn't my car until I was sitting in it getting ready to go to work.

I once drove off in someone else's 1978 yellow Honda Civic. It took me a few minutes to notice the seat covers were missing. At first I thought someone had stolen them. Turns out the key to one 1978 Civic works on all 1978 Civics. I used that knowledge to help a woman who had locked her keys in her car once.
