Accompanying A Newly Contacted Tribe in the Papuan Rainforest

I stumbled upon this tiny segment in a larger documentary by ‪@drewbinsky‬ a couple months ago on his journey to learn about tribal life in the West Papuan rainforest. The sincerity and purity in this man's voice just shook me to my core, to such a degree that I stopped watching and haven't even seen the rest of the documentary since.
Drew originally set out to meet the Korowai people to learn about and document the nature of their cannibalism, but was accidentally taken to a different group called the Mamuna tribe, who welcomed him with open arms, and allegedly have only recently had their first contact with humans of the modern industrialized world.
I think it says something remarkable that they have a song that I can so immediately and viscerally connect with, even though our cultural and musical references-on the surface-might be as distant as they get. On top of that, the fact that I can be sitting here in my little Canadian cabin, and not only hear, but sing alongside these people, and then share that with the world, is profound to me.
I'd love so much if this could somehow reach their ears someday. What a gift of an outcome that would be.
Here's a link to Drew's documentary:

I'm from the Gulf Region in Papua New Guinea. We had some songs similar to this we used to sing late in the afternoon or early morning walking back from the river after bath or from the garden. Most times we forget about singing till we see some signs that remind us to just talk to nature, especially when walking alone late in the afternoon. 😥❤️

It doesn’t look like purity. It looks like a wild animals gaze. These people still have instinct running through their blood. Unfortunately us western humans have no instinct left Edit: I have to add this for all the small minded people, I didn’t call this man a wild animal, I stated his gaze was like a wild animal, on alert. In his eyes. Nothing to do with skin, race, culture, beliefs..simply the look in his eye, from the lifestyle of this tribe. Hence why I stated they still have instinct running through their blood which western society has lost. Instinct that makes them fantastic at survival! Fucking idiots thinking anything negative from what I said.

I think the reason this is touching us all so much is because it strikes a chord with the most primal part of our nature, like smelling a smell that you remember but don't know from where. It's like a long long forgotten melody calling back to you to make you remember your own humanity. Modern civilization has made us disconnected from our souls, from nature, from each other. But this, this is completely unadulteraded from technology, modernity, fast paced life. And it's touching because it still exists within all of us. This is who and how we are meant to be on this planet, one with the earth, singing to the forest as it sings back, breathing in unison with the trees. You can feel it, when you hear this, some part of you still remembers, and longs back to its true self.

@@theislandgardeners6615 God was not the one who killed the tribes but misguided fools that listened to a priest that was taken over by the devil. Certain tribal people although they don’t have quite the same name, worship the one true god in the way they live. Take Hawaii for example; the reason why missionaries were so fascinated with our culture was because of the harmony we had amongst our people. A love the could not be seen but was felt. And in this love, there is life. Where there is life there is breath. Hence “Aloha”. Breaking it down we have “Alo” which is to give freely, to share, and then we have “Ha”. This is the breath of life. When you look at the culture, this breath of life is the essence of what is talked about in the Bible. The one that gives Adam and Eve life. The devils greatest work is convincing humans that they should kill each other in the name of god. It was a devils influence that started the Spanish Inquisition, later leading to a Templar movement. With one mission in mind; convert or die. You probably already know what happened next

@@multihawaiianninja I agree with you, however I never said god killed anyone, it’s always men with godly intentions making god in his own image, and his god wants wealth , lots of shiny things like gold (it’s an infant god) , and much beach properties because it’s not in heaven. And so these people kill all that is there in the name of god, they never said devil, and this mentality is still present and stronger than ever, so nothing as changed except those who were once seeking god are now seeking shiny things and beach properties too.

Old Story Teller : And a Man sat alone, drenched deep in sadness. And all the animals drew near to him and said, "We do not like to see you so sad. Ask us for whatever you wish and you shall have it." The Man said, "I want to have good sight." The vulture replied, "You shall have mine." The Man said, "I want to be strong." The jaguar said, "You shall be strong like me." Then the Man said, "I long to know the secrets of the earth." The serpent replied, "I will show them to you." And so it went with all the animals. And when the Man had all the gifts that they could give, he left. Then the owl said to the other animals, "Now the Man knows much, he'll be able to do many things. Suddenly I am afraid." The deer said, "The Man has all that he needs. Now his sadness will stop." But the owl replied, "No. I saw a hole in the Man, deep like a hunger he will never fill. It is what makes him sad and what makes him want. He will go on taking and taking, until one day the World will say, 'I am no more and I have nothing left to give.'"

@@Str-e5d 1 - I see what you did there, with the "painful truth" .. good one lol.. 2- I don't mean to get into y'all arguments, just to bring some prospective.. I was born and grew up in Cameroon, before i moved to France at age 15. My grandparents on my father side, were people from the forest.. Just like those people you see in the video.. there is no direct road, you have to cross a river on multiple points to get there.. and they too have many ralliement songs like the one in the video .. songs you may take as "sadness", but in reality, those songs had social values, mostly long distance communications. One was to announce the death of a tribe chief ( then the song was more a celebration of his life, and the rise of his son succeeding him) another one was to announce that the men have been spotted coming back from the hunting/fishing, so gather all by sunfall under the big tree; to share the take equally in between tribes .. Stuff like that .. Singing along was basically acknowledging that you got the message. Point is, the "general pain and sorrow" you are describing, wasn't exactly the sense given to it .. Not from my experience at least .. But still, it DOES give me chill .. I love my people .. (the last part really ai'nt got none to do with anything, just couldn't help myself) ...

They are humans just like us, and have undoubtedly been involved in wars with other tribes and everything that comes with it. Dude’s probably done worse stuff than any of us could ever fathom doing.

This reminds me of when I was on my honeymoon in Jamaica. This nento band was singing The Lion Sleeps and their harmonies hit right into my soul just like this does. Music is so awesome. It connects us. I could imagine the afterlife sounds just like this, except the sound fills your soul with happiness and love.

As a child living in the island of Jamaica 🇯🇲. I remember when the would move houses from one place to the next. The men would sing just like this. One man would start, and then the others would join in. This is bringing back such good memories for me. Beautiful harmony. Very harmonious!! it's truly heartwarming and emotional at the same time. Thank you so much for sharing ❤️.
