Very nice presentation. At 14:40 for the wind adjustment, instead of indicating that one should aim left to each of the mil dots, I would suggest indicating that the target be sighted on the first, second or third mil dot respectively TO THE RIGHT. This makes it a bit easier to think about where your target must be (in your scope view) at the time you shoot. At 15:20 the comment regarding sighting at 50 yds may be confusing to some. He indicates that "I've got to aim high so that the pellet comes in low" Aiming high will put the pellet at an even higher trajectory which is the wrong direction. The elevation adjustment for the target needs to be by aiming below the target to accommodate the pellet trajectory being high at the 50 yd distance. So, his aim point should be two mil dots lower. In other words the target should be directly behind the second mil dot ABOVE the crosshair which means you are shooting lower to compensate for this high at 50 trajectory. Please comment if this makes sense to you.

Kelenstavis .... it is good to hear from you ..... I am currently working on a KZbin video that will address barrels among our responsibilities in achieving good accuracy with oiur air guns. Probably be available in January or February. I believe the combination of good ... tight ... lubricated pellets ... in a clean barrel will provide the accuracy that most of us need to achieve the accuracy that we need to warrant the expense of airguns in general. I have a cheap Hatsan that was a bit over 100 new, a 22. I can hit a Vienna sausage can open sights at apprx 120 feet away. I can`t afford anything expensive and needed a pest control option for nighttime for my garden. It shoots at 800 fps with a 14.3 grain pellet and is perfect for me. I hated spring air rifles for years after trying out the Walmart garbage friends had years ago. Couldn`t hit anything at all. So this one surprised me. I only got it for the power...figured I could do damage very close...maybe 15-20 feet...to stop a herd of vegetable destroying armadillos. A Daisy had little effect. Thank you for your service, sir. I have friends and family members that were over there. I see what they go through over it. I was just a kid back then. Our small community lost some great guys there.

Good overview on basic shooting concepts. After years of shooting competition .22 small bore, I was gifted with a couple air rifles. What I noticed most about the mechanical performance difference were the horrible triggers on the air guns. The short crisp release of my .22 LR gun (Winchester Model 75 3lb match trigger) was replaced by a long, slow, soggy travel to some undetermined release point. Your sight picture can move around a lot while you're pulling back, back, back on that squishy stock trigger. My first mod to these air guns will be to improve the triggers.

It is good to hear from you PATCsawyer... and unfortunately you hit the nail on the head. A few air guns allow you to adjust the trigger down to a one lb. pull..... others have to have their triggers replaced. The more expensive guns seem to have "acceptable triggers"..... please keep us in your air gun experiences loop ... also watch our last video launch ... which will get you into a contest for two air guns.... one is a semi auto AEA in 30 caliber with an acceptable trigger.... I love the format of your videos. You leave nothing out. I have been shooting break barrels and firearms since I was 6 years old with my grandpa and dad and PCP airguns for 10 years now. I been hunting since I was 8 years old mostly Dove at that age with a 4-10 when we lived in Argentina. When we got to the United States i was 14 years old and started hunting big game which I enjoy with my airguns too. No matter how long you have been hunting or how good you think you are you can always learn something from someone else. This is why I love your videos cause I'm always learning something. Exacly what i needed to know...i'm literaly new to this and other than a few adventures with crossmans and daisys when i was a little kid a few decades have pass since the last time i carried an air gun and shooted with it...but recently i was having critters problems and my traps was not working at all so i decide for a better solution and bought a cheap daisy powerline 880 multi pump and two 500ct crossman high quality pointed pellets thin cans and exterminated the problem...thing is that i'm hooked with this now and want to learn more and of course planning on buying a good rifle and after doing a research on many brands i just fell in love with the Weihrauch HW97k blue laminate...i kill those critters by shooting them from just 10yrds more or less and my rifle is just on open sights and at that distance was pretty accurate but 4 days ago i was target practicing with my daisy and begun to shoot from 10yrds at my target and same result..but then moved to 20yrds aiming exacly the same way holding my breath but that time the pellet was hitting higher again and again...now after saw your explanation of the way the pellets travel now i know what was happenig...now i don't need to look further to learn more about air guns...thank you for your knowledge sharing.

As a boy in the late 1950’s I was a member of a shooting club where as a junior I was using a scaled down .22 single shot martini action rim fire rifle shooting on an indoor 25 yard range. The rifle had aperture front and rear sight. My first lessen was breathing technique which has stayed with me all the years and I still use the technique in the second half of my 70’s. Although I use scopes I still like the peep site.

Jay Way ... a 100 yard shot with a Gamo Magnum is going to be a "hail Mary" shot no matter what scope you use or elevation you are shooting from ... The only way to get an accurate answer to this question is to set up targets at 25 yard distances ... and shoot them yourself with the same pellet... prepared equally ... (ie bullet lube and visual inspection of the skirt etc) ... please keep me in your loop on this one... Dr. Russ

Hello Dr Russ, Thank you for your extremely helpful film on air rifles. I really enjoyed watching it, with all the helpful information you gave. I've only had air rifles a few years and in my mid fifties. Air rifles, due to circumstance, were forbidden when I was growing, and when I dearly wanted to own and be trusted with one. There's a recent comment on here, truly enough, along the lines of, beware of the hunter with only one gun! I have now, some of the air rifles I dreamed of when I was younger. With that previous statement in mind, I did what you suggested. I dedicated each air rifle with information cards and a tin of pellets. I set out targets at ten, twenty, thirty, and forty yards. I zeroed at forty yards, then produced the card, kept with each particular rifle, telling me hold over/hold under at all the other distances. It's impossible to remember how each rifle shoots, these days at the different distances, what with everything that is going on these days. My only tuition is from conversations with work colleagues, Utube, and helpful people like you. I found your section on breathing very helpful, too. I like to shoot springers and already am aware of and practice artillary hold.I've really enjoyed watching and listening to you. There's something about listening to a senior person who knows what he's talking about and has the experience to back it all up. Also, your pleasant, respectful manner is great, too. I agree 100%, I don't have the money for all the accessories, learning how to shoot my guns correctly makes it look like you have a lot of money in one. I grew up with a Dad that hunted everything with a .22 rimfire, accuracy was key, so I guess I learned to use what you have and how to use it before putting more money into it. I did a crappy video on shooting tips that I used to relearn how to shoot. Health issues completely changed my body so I had to learn how to use my body and shoot again. Great info, very informative video.

On one of my guns, I pinch the trigger to pull it straight back because the reach is too far for me to reach the trigger with my body, it works great. So many things you have to train yourself to do automatically and if your practicing wrong you'll teach yourself to be inaccurate.

@@russjones7981 I'm chomping at the bit wanting spring to get here and get out. I just had a couple of calls to do some hunting this morning, I'm not able to go and it looks as though it's gonna be the only warm, clear day this week. I finally got myself a new camera that I can work with, I haven't gotten a scope cam yet, I made one but broke it, but I'll still may be able to get some footage. Honestly, my big hold up on getting out and doing a lot more hunting the way I would like is due to the fact that I am disabled, I have issues and don't drive much because I can't control the steering wheel that well, not that I can't, but it can be dangerous when I have to make quick movements and my body won't do it. My whole body is hosed up, but my shoulders, elbows, wrists, and hands are the main issue with it. I refuse to drive with my kids in the car for safety reasons, and for the safety of others while I'm out there. I never thought of or dreamed I'd be in this postion when I was younger, not even five years ago, but here I am rockin' it anyway, lol. I have to be easy and move differently, turning the wheel will pop my shoulders outta socket in a heartbeat, it's hard to drive like that, lol. I'll be looking forward to the vids, sorry about the long comment, I can talk for days when it comes to hunting and my airguns.

I have come to the conclusion that everyone is handicapped in some way... for one man it's a physical handicap... for another its financial and he has filed for bankruptcy .... while losing a business he started... for a 3rd ... it's emotional and has gone through a divorce ... a 4th is someone who lost a child early ... perhaps even a special Ed child ... I've come to the conclusion in life that it's not that we're handicap ... it's how we handle the handicap ... do they get up off the ground and dust their pants off ... and keep going.... it sounds like you have been doing that to the best of your ability ... please keep it up... and with a positive spirit.... @@russjones7981 I do appreciate that, it's true, I've been through everything here you mentioned, but never considered it as handicapped, I've supposedly been handicapped since I was 14, I'm now 50, it didn't stop anything, you simply learn how to live differently and work with that ya got. It wasn't until 5 years ago that it really hammered me and disfigured my body, nobody was able to see the pain and problems of having severe Crohns, the fight to beat it when I was supposed to have been dead and gone 25 years ago, I have RA that disfigured me, OA, MSD, and a few more issues. It's strange when you fight it and try to live a normal life and most people put you down for it, try to tell you it's your fault, you're lazy, etc, etc. I still snuck into the military, I worked and done jobs I wasn't allowed to against doctors orders, beat the mental game of it, I refused to even say I was disabled until a few years ago, I would not accept it, and honestly, I still don't, disabled to me is not being able to do anything, I am able and I will as long as I have anything to do with it. I get comments at times from people who should know better that say stupid things like, "You look fine to me", or "We all have problems when we get older, you just need to toughen up". They have no clue, I've been dealing with it since I was a young teen, I've almost died more times than I can count from it, I've been through crap that most would never believe until they hear it from others who have been around me, it's just the life I've lived. I've had autoimmune disorders since my early 20's, chronic pain since I was a teen, and boy it has definitely gotten worse, but I still try to put a smile on my face, keep on living and trying, just living and getting through the day is tough on a daily basis, it has been for a looooong time it seems. It wasn't until I was in the shape I am now that people could physically see it, if they don't see it then it's in your head, lol. It's all a mental game, there are so many times I never wanted to live another minute to have to suffer and nothing could be done to help me other than comforting me until I was dead, but I keep beating the odds. It's hard not being able to do as much as I once did, but I get angry at myself for not doing enough, not trying enough, not fighting hard enough, I always know there is someone a lot worse than me, like my Dad who is eaten up with cancer and dying as we speak, other family members whom, even though they aren't in the physical shape I am in are still kicking and trying after absolutely horrible things have happened to them their whole lives. It's the mindset I guess, I watched my Dad rebuild a whole new section on his house and still make it when he was in a wheelchair, he kept going, and still is to this day with only a few months left. I want to do things and I eventually figure it out, if there's a will there's a way, I know I have issues, but look what Steven Hawkins did. I guess I made the comment when I was hurting pretty bad, every joint in my body is hosed up, has been for years, but the pain can get crazy at times, I look in the Dr's face begging for someone to help me and there's nothing they can do but try to comfort me as best they can. I've found ways to help myself, but I guess I get a bit whiny at times over it, like right now, I'm hurting like a SOB today, but all I can think is that it'll get better, I'll feel better in a few hours, it's not that bad since my stomach is not adding to it at the moment, I am better than I was five years ago, I'll continue to get better, all I have to do is keep going. It's a mental game for sure, I guess I get tired of the fight sometimes and get whiny. Sorry about that, but thank you for the reply, I was thinking about it and thought I shouldn't have put all of that on there, and I was expecting something in the area of comments I mentioned earlier which is normally what the response is when I bring it up. I guess I try with the videos and getting out to hunt when I can and messing with my guns to keep my mind busy, but to leave something for the kids, especially my seven year old in case I don't get so lucky in the fight in this battle, something he can hang onto and have from me if that happens. I've been on that edge too many times, but in my head, I will be here when he's 30, he deserves that and I'm gonna do what I can to make it happen, if it doesn't it won't be from me not fighting for it, that's for sure.

That was great! They did not explain any thing like this when I was in the Coast Guard. Yes I just put the rifle in the closet with the pistol. They have been there for several years( "neither one of those air guns shoot straight. Oh no it is not me. I allways have the pumpkin on the on the spike. Wind? It just blew my hat off and I had to RUN after it , breathing all over the place but I am on target now.") Hurry jerk the trigger when everything lines up. Missed again. I need a new air gun. Pcp They don't miss! I am not quite this bad but I saved your vedio and I am going to make myself a test on the points you covered. One queston, when using a scope do you close the unused eye. I got the guns out last month (actualy the rifel fell over) I figured it must be me and not the equipment so I am trying to educate myself and try again.

Good day sir. Ive got a question that I feel your expertise may be helpful.I have a Benjamin bulldog 357 and I added a depinger its not a short depinger its a longer one to supposedly make sure each shot gets the air it needs. It has done a great job as the ping is gone. My question is however do you have any knowledge if a depinger lowers fps and impact power. Thank you for your time

Since there are so many different depingers, my answer has to be ....1.) if the number of shots you have ... has increased or decreased ... then velocity was affected similarly...2.) write or call the source of your depinger and ask them ... they would likely know. @@drsrussandpaula yes the pressure in my rifle will certainly make a difference but most videos ive seen have all been the short depinger and the one i installed is a long about twice the length its designed to give plenty of air volume for even the most hopped up rifles(thats what the information on product says im new to this and have zero knowledge 😂) so I was wondering if you had heard any campfire stories about the depingers in general. Wyoming airguns is who i purchased mine from and good quality. They sent 2 single shot trays with the depinger they stated the quality wasnt high enough to sell but are fully functioning products so I believe this company will deliver good quality. Just wanted to pick your brain . thanks for your time keep up the good work.

@@jaygrounds4505 Jay ... I have no experience with long depingers ... and my only concern would be too much power ... beyond your gun's sweet spot ... typically 800 to 975 psi.... Too much power would cause your pellets or slugs to not stay on course. If you are following the tips I give in my video on Accuracy... and you are getting a good tight group at 30 yards ... 3 inch circle... then you are fine. If your group is wild and larger than a 3 inch group then you need to shoot a heavier pellet to slow it down ... or go to your source and have them grind it down to your original pingers link. Dr. Russ

BarbarBoobie... you are right, I could have explained it better. Bottom line is that the rise and fall of the pellet (slugs too) allows your gun to be accurate at two different ranges... and you have to make adjustments to compensate that rise and fall at other ranges. Dr. Russ

My grandfather who was born in 1886 told me they used a similar technique to find bee hives. They`d bait the bees early in the morning with honey or something sweet and sprinkle flour or chalk on them. This lit them up in the early sun and they could get a direction on the hive. They`d move the bait closer the next time until they found the bee tree. He taught me a lot of survival info in the 1970s.

Great video, thank you for your service. Been a long time since I touched a rifle, haven't zeroed iron sights in 16 years. Lost my taste for weapons after the invasion of Iraq. You have any video on adjusting iron sights. Also I would like to add breath control, Trigger squeeze, picture sight. Most use too much finger for triggers causing them to pull left and right. Or they don't place their cheek in the same spot every time. Had a platoon sergeant once correct me on elbow position. Having your elbows flared out can negatively effect accuracy. Keeping your elbows pulled tightly together effects form and increases accuracy , but I can't totally remember why it hard been a very long time. Thank you again for the great information.

thanks for writing Shaine McMillan ... I covered many of the items in your comments ... except for the one about elbows.... it is important to use them when standing or sitting up to gain more steady support.... and in the lay down prone position... they act as a tripod and need to be steady too. I thought I covered iron sights in this video when I discussed the "pumpkin on a post".... Wars leave our brains in a position of trying to remember what is needed to be remembered and forget what doesn't need to be remembered again. I suffered from PTSD after Vietnam ... leaving 16 men in my Infantry Unit who didn't return home with me.... unfortunately, PTSD cut out those memories ... along with everything else before it ... like college... high school. ... and growing up..... Fortunately, friends urged me to seek VA counseling on the subject .... and I have my whole memory back ... and can speak intelligently about Vietnam for anybody who asks .... please keep us in your air gun info loop ... helping us help everyone stay air gun sharp... @@russelljones4132 I wasn't certain, I try to share what was shared with me. I'm so glad to see vietnam veterans getting the services they deserve. I know the va was horrible back in the day. Even states have gotten better about helping veterans. Took me 8 years to get my ptsd service connected. And it was only because my state had a office to help veterans. Over the years I have noticed posture effects so many different things. I took it for granted until I spent time training in Martial arts. Things flow so much better when your intent is focused. I definitely scroll through the videos. I just spent 120 dollars on a colt m4a1. Looking forward to playing around with it. I don't use regular fire arms anymore too many memories. Thanks again for replying. Oh ya I asked because I am a little fuzzy on zeroing iron sights. Back is left and right, front is up and down. But I can't remember how much each click is.

Jose ... it is good to hear from you and thanks for your thanks for my military experience. Many Hispanics served in the military during our Vietnam War and many were wounded or lost their lives. I was wounded 3 times and lost 16 men in my Infantry Platoon ... even though we practiced the accuracy tips above. While we lost 50,000 plus during that war ... the enemy lost several million. I know that we reported hundreds following our weekly battles. I typically only recall those events until someone like you thanks me for my service.... I'm new to airguns but it sounds like you're saying regulated air guns or air guns that have a regulator in it are better and more accurate than air guns without a regulator? I recently purchased the Texan 50 cal so do you think that gun would benefit with a regulated shot?

Freedom... you have an expensive and beautiful air rifle..... air rifles over $1000 have precision hammers and valves that make little sense to adding a regulator. I am not sure a regulator is even available for your rifle. Those heavy slugs or pellets should be dropping into a target very close to each other.... if not ... it may be your trigger technique... be sure to watch my video on accuracy... then get back to me... good to hear from you again... Good to hear from you again Stan 121 midling ... yes some scopes have "mil dots" ... short for military dots ... and they very much help you compensate for distance as well as wind. Mark those notes down on some tape and stick it to your stock for future reference. Also practice on windy days ... because that will let you add to your wind notes.
