Quick point of note, the grey showing through the EWS logo may be more accurate than you'd expect. They were just vinyl overlays stuck on to the side of the loco over the old BR livery, so it is possible that the paint below may have been visible through them (this is also why they are high gloss while the rest of the body is satin). Either way, a stunning model and a good start to the year. =)

I was just going to comment the exact same thing about the EWS logo bieng an addition to the livery around 10 years after so it is probably quite accurate. With the yellow bieng light and the grey bieng dark, it probably would have shown through in real life especially in brighter conditions.

I was just thinking the same thing. You're absolutely right. When EWS first got their hands on them. They didn't exactly repaint them. The vinyl was really just a quick fix to show they belonged to them.

Wow ! Accurascale are really showing what they are capable of. I think they might become a major manufacturer like Hornby and Bachmann. Also, I dont know if anyone else noticed, but the intro looked very similar to your intro from a couple years ago ! Thats cool but I liked the previous intro better. Love you

Since I made this post, I bought a Hornby train set (for the track and controller), some Accurascale hoppers and wagons and a pan accurascale syphon g medical wagon (I know, wrong eta but I like it). I need to make a decent baseboard now so I can add buildings, landscape etc. I’m getting there slowly. Thanks for the advice. Good thinking. I might actually join a local club. Probably get some good advice and deals there. I’m also getting the hitachi shunter from Hornby next week. Again, different era, but who cares,

I own two of these locos at the moment they are by far my best purchases ever (ones sound fitted, the other is DCC Ready) I'm still yet to get at least two more because I love them so much, they're faultless! I would love to see another manufacturer try to top an even better AC loco than the 92, although in fairness Bachmann were not that far off with their Class 90s, I suggest you give one of those a try at some point!
@lapiswake6583

The 92s were actually £20 cheaper upon initial announcement, for a good couple of years before they had to put the prices up because of difficulties with the pantograph mechanism. Everyone who preordered at the old price (including me with 010) got it for that, and we had advance warning of the price going up too. Mine's absolutely fantastic, the only issue being the couplings dropping off a bit too easily (and a shame it doesn't have the painted bogie details or the channel tunnel depictions on the sides most of the others do). I haven't tested its haulage capacity yet, but it handles 11 hornby pullmans (with lights) with ease. I do need a decoder for it to maximise the use of the pantographs. A shame I couldn't afford to preorder the mk5 sleepers to match... (and I am tempted by a 2nd loco, whether it be a DB one, a 2nd CS one, a GBRf one, or any others. I've got an old hornby one in triple grey, and the plan is to get 001 from lima in EWS and one in this EWS triple grey from hornby railroad for comparison). The eagle logo is the depot plaque, which BR did for the major freight depots of the sector era (like for example the 52G plates on steam locos' smokeboxes, 52G being Sunderland (South Dock) plus it's subshed at Durham, 34A being Kings Cross (Top Shed)). This one is Crewe Electric Depot, where all the 92s were based. 92010 is my favourite loco out of my entire fleet across N, 009, 00, and 0 gauges. It's the most advanced, the best value (going off RRP), one of the smoothest, definitely the quietest, and is just overall excellent. It was delayed about 2 years, having been slated for a 2020 release initially, and mine only just arrived before christmas because it was in the last batch to arrive, but was well worth the wait. It'll be interesting for you to review the bachmann class 90. A slightly smaller loco, only 1 pantograph which is motorised, but its RRP is £230...

Brilliant review. Sam, even though you said it yourself that you were nickpicking, it was good nickpicking, nothing is perfect, and it was good you did find faults with your loco. I'm surprised when you opened yours to find speakers in there, I haven't touched mine yet, so I'm very interested in looking at purchasing a sound decoder in the future. Honestly, I'm looking forward to running mine in soon when I get round to chipping it for dcc, but for you to have a dc layout, it was looking excellent. I wonder if it would make you look into dcc even if it's a test track and a... cheap controller. Keep up your reviews and a Happy New year to you Sam

I watch these reviews on my Chromebook while I eat my breakfast. Euvirail reviewed this loco and the motor in his packed up while he was filming! It is a pity the pantographs are not metal and cannot be used to pick up current from overhead catenery. When they have gone to the trouble to make the pantographs go up and down, a bit more metal in the detailing would have added quality as you say! Thanks for uploading yet another review in your inimitable style!

This is indeed a amazing model - almost perfect. If I was modeling the modern era this loco would find a place on the layout but since I model 1955 to 1960 I'll mis out. Never the less I admire the engineering that's gone in this high standard model and for a unbeatable price tag. But I recon that since Accurascale doesn't has to pay a bunch of directors and an army of personnel their working costs are more modest than those of the big boys - who besides also need to 'sponsor' their products with the 'sharks in our hobby' and butter them in order to get good scoring reviews ! As always your reviews are 'objective' and without the tra la la. So again thank you very much Sam for keeping your channel high class, interesting and most enjoyable ! Success for 2023 ! Kind regards, Filip

What an absolutely delightful model. I'm pleased to see they bothered with motors for the pantographs too. As far as I know ironically Hornby's 800 class which is a bi-diesel unit doesn't even have that feature which is a pity because in real life the thing would change modes of operation such as it would swap to the diesel engine for non electrified routes meaning lowering the pantographs. Would be a great feature for someone that had a layout featuring such a transition. Accurascale really does take pride in their products.

Those motors on the pantographs gives you the option to operate the locomotive from overhead wires. Believe of not Sam, there are hard core modelers that build a working layout with real overhead wires to further add realism to electric locomotive operations. An absolute stunning loco by the way. A pure example that a loco that you pay 184 pounds (or $200 for a US citizen) that is a quality loco. The lack of a fluid crawl would've been a mild complaint to me. Not worth docking points off being it was a mainline loco operating express trains. I love your grading system by the way.

Very interesting and informative review as always. I did find something odd, given that I run Marklin. The manufacturer obviously did their homework in producing such a nice model, so why did they cheap out by providing plastic pantographs? Granted, they may been aiming for a certain price point, but they could have just skipped the pantograph drive motors (a needless frill) and probably come out ahead in cost by providing metal pantographs instead. By going plastic, they've also negated one of the main advantages of electric locomotives. Just about every electric in my collection can run off either overhead or track current, meaning that you can run 2 trains independently on the same track circuit in analog mode. Being able to do that definitely makes operating more interesting.

Re the coupling dropping out, could you 3D print a new part that would be a tighter fit? I know that for any price that we pay for our modles we should not haave to (for thoses of you with a 3D printer) consider having to make a modifacation. The very basics of couplings simply doing their job is not too much to ask! It's a nice model, but like you I am not really into Electric locos, other than the class 91 as used on the East Coast Main Line. And living in a ex NER?LNER area, we don't really get to see any electric locomotives,. The motorised pantographs featuers are mentioned on Accurascale's website!

First, we have a German-like price. That is around the equivalent of 218 €. As an electric CC, you have a Roco BR 250 of the DR for 245 €, a Rivarossi FS E 646 for 216 €, or a Piko DB BR 103 for 189 €, all HO scale good to high quality models. Let's see if the quality is on par. So, we have a top notch quality packaging with nice instruction and documentation booklets, nice accessory bag, a superb looking engine, Märklin-like weight, zero cosmetic mishaps, superb details, nice mechanism (save the plastic bogies, metal would have been better), especially the motorized pantograhs, a galore of features, incliding a splendid lighting system and, last but not least, high quality drivetrain and good dynamic qualities. So, mission accomplished. The only serious drawbacks I see is the pantographs first : that would have been better to have metal ones, like the Sommerfeldt ones you can get for German models. Second, is the opening : why clips instead of ol' good screws ? A superb object which is also a good puller, this is what you ought to get for GBP 190/217 €. A lesson for the others, despite some minor downs (clips, pantographs, plastic bogies) Now, I WANT MY CLASS 37 ! Seems I'll get the same level of quality...

Excellent review of a fantastic looking loco! If I could make one recommendation, it would useful if you had a small DCC test bed to demonstrate DCC features in your reviews. I've commented similar in the past, but this loco really underscores (for me) the increasing need for such a segment. I would be interesting to see you develop a structured quality assessment for the likes of speakers, lighting systems and motorised parts, rather than just commenting on the presence of them. Like everything, there will be a range of quality in terms of sound clarity, motorised smoothness/speed, etc, and I would love to see these elements evaluated as well as the aesthetics and locomotion qualities. I appreciate that would involve a significant setup exercise on your side, and require each loco to be chipped, but as you are now removing bodies to demonstrate serviceability and details of the mechanism, there would be opportunity for reviewing the ease of fitting a chip, which could in turn lead to a look at the performance of DCC controlled features.

Excellent review as always Sam. The circles on the side of the loco are symbolic of the channel tunnel of which these were built for as you mentioned. The eagle plaque on the side of the cab refers to which depot the loco is allocated to. There were 38 different depot allocations that locos in the railfreight triple grey livery could have displayed and the eagle one means this loco was based at Crewe

Well done Sam on another excellent review. Your 4K camera work really helped to reflect the fine details this model has. Your upgrade was well worth it. There is little justification now for other manufacturers for the extortionate pricing for old (and in some cases new) tooling. Accurascale with their second successful model has now set the Benchmark very high for others to follow. My expectations for the 'Manor' class is very very high based on these releases! I have got mine on preorder. Hope you have too! 👍

I bought Beethoven in BR Railfreight with sound. It is an incredible loco. The servos on the pantographs are excellent. I thought I had broken one, before realising that when you press the function key it lowers the other first before raising the other while playing the correct sounds. The sound is something else. The two quality speakers sound great, far better than others I have. The horns made my wife jump. I suppose the sound may be too loud. You would hear it all the way round a layout room, even if it was big. However I do believe you can turn it down if you know have to configure it. This maybe the best loco I have bought. Certainly top 3.

Its a truly an amazing loco. I live in India and I bought the DB schenker red version of the loco and was absolutely thrilled at the exquisite details. The Class 92 has a special place in my heart as it almost resembles the Class WAP 7 locos back home ! Both churning out 6300 horses... Great loco overall and an amazing review by you like always:)

I wasn't aware the model railway hobby was a thing in India. I lived in Bangalore for a few months back in 2010 model shops were non existent and rare toy shops only catered for say up to 5 year old toddlers. I did though persuade my driver (the company provided one) to take me to the outskirts of the city to watch some Indian trains

I think Accurascale have hit the right mark with their locos in terms of attention to detail, quality and keeping prices realistic, it shows what can be done. I didn't order this model as the protoyupe is electric but have a 37, 31 and Manor on order and already have a Deltic.

This does seem to be a good loco, for £190 it’s certainly good value, similar to both the Deltic and Planet Industrials efforts in terms of the quality of the mechanism. Can’t wait to see the first of the Class 37 coming from Accurascale! Will ask if you’re planning to review the Heljan Class 25/3 as I believe it’s a good quality model released not long ago, and run 2 is due, would be good to see how it compares to this seeing as the price of the 25/3 is now £195 at the Retailers. Another great review, can’t wait for the next one!
