I was on accutane 20 years ago. I had cystic acne on my face and back. I work as a hairdresser and my self esteem was so low, from customers asking me if I was contagious, and refusing to let me do their hair. I would cry every night. This drug saved my life. It was life changing. My dermatologist, was honest and told me I will always be prone to acne ,even after using this drug, but, it will never come back to to same severity i had. He was right. 20 years later I do have breakouts, but nothing out of control. I never had any negative side effects other than dry lips, and, I made the mistake of waxing my eyebrows. ( don't do this) I was fine in the sun . I would take this drug again in a heartbeat.

Now I am 40 yo, and I am suffering from acute acne since my youth. My dermatologist was a bit reluctant to give me the pill as here doctors do not have much experience using this medication, all thinking it is too dangerous... And finaly it was my ginecologist who geve me the prescription, as she knows me for ages and understands the dept of the damage acne is causing to my life. I started on 20 mg, and after my first full blood test at the end of the month normally will switch to 40mg. If you wear contacts you may notice irritation and uncomfortable fit due to the dryness and you may want to visit your optometrist. Otherwise, OTC artificial tears such as refresh gel, refresh mega 3, systane complete are good options to use as needed. If you have contacts you can use saline solution or an artificial tear that’s preservative free, such as refresh for contacts. Eating leafy greens and fish/omega 3 foods/supplements can help quell the dryness. The blurred vision is a side effect of dryness

I hope this helps someone....I thought I would have to try Accutane but I realized that it was several things, including.... my BB Cream, no kidding, and a GF of mine was using a BB Cream too that was giving her terrible horrible acne until I told her to throw it away and it cleared up. However, it can be metabolic, certain oils my body can't metabolize, such as Olive oil or any fried foods will give me a small pimple usually, but Olive oil will give me really deep, and really terrible cystic acne, also cheap chocolate, because it has wax, and cashews, as well as certain skin products, gave me acne. Testing out foods and oils to see which gave me acne, changing my skincare products and my diet plus being extra hygienic with my pillow covers, and learning seriously to never ever evverrrr touch my face, and take regular pro-biotics cleared it all up forever for me.

For the first time in years I’ve gotten out of bed, looked in the mirror, and had a face free of zits-okay, I have one small little pimple. It feels SO good and freeing. I also normally have super oily skin (oily two hours after washing it or sooner), which meant I was constantly uncomfortable. Now I can go to the movies with my friends and not feel gross halfway through. For the first time in so long I can finally enjoy myself. The side effects have been manageable and absolutely worth it.

I had very mild acne (a few cysts that I was usually treating them with benzoyl peroxide) and extremely oily skin. I had this problem for over 12 years (I am 26 now) and it was getting worse from year to year. I finally decided to try Accutane. I don't have polycystic ovaries or hormonal problems, just big sebaceous glands on my face (like my mother and grandmother). I took Accutane for almost 3 months and I am super happy with the results. I suffer from back acne and it started from behind the neck at around 16 years old. I’ve been bodybuilding since I was 15 years olds, I won’t lie I’m a sucker for ice cream , when i eat bad I can notice my acne is getting worst. Now I’m 23. First month on accutane 40mg , I cleaned my diets, dry lips, dry face, but that’s all. I can notice my skin is getting better . Now I’m currently on month 2 at 80mg. So far so good. I feel that my skin is getting thinner. It feel weird but I like the sensation :) . I take my accutane with food like avocado, oatmeal with Virgin coconut oil. I’ve heard that it react better with fats... my face is pretty much acne free but dryer. I can’t wait for my back to clear up! This treatment is long but worth it at the end! I don’t drink alcohol. Apple ciders vinegar with cranberry juice in the morning to detoxify the liver is a must. Thank you for your tips Dr Lim.

My case is strictly genetic it sucks! People tell me not to have dairy or sugar, and I tell them I've been on a NO processed food, NO dairy, NO added sugar, and NO carb diet for the last 3 years and im still breaking out like nuts. I've thought about doing accutane and honestly some of the side effects people have been having, short term and long term have been scaring me off from taking it. I already suffer from Lupus disease so im just worried my arthritis will get worse than it already is. Or gain a whole new array of problems.
@sinoperture8 жыл бұрын
I took it almost 20 years ago. I stopped early as the joint pain and muscle pain got in the way of sport - and the hair falling out. Luckily it did it's job and not a pimple since. Not that mine was bad - it was just "recalcitrant" and would not go away. The thing they worked out AFTER I had gone through it was the propensity to cause depression. When I found that out years later it made that whole time period in my life make so much more sense. It was so weird feeling upset - but not being upset. It didn't make sense and I knew I wasn't upset - but I was.... I wish they'd have known of that link sooner - like before I took it. The blood tests for liver function every 2 weeks were fun too. Gave me confidence to keep on the piss... I was at uni afterall!

@@Slam_24 random question, but did your acne ever go away? So many people say accutane is a quick fix. Acne comes back.
@Slam_24 Жыл бұрын
@@saniazahra887 Thanks for asking. It has been a long while since writing this message, so I can definitely answer this. I was on accutane for about a year and a half around this time, at the same time as being in my final year of high school and battling an autoimmune disease. There are side-effects you should consider when taking it, and they all differ, some of which do nothing to really improve the situation. For instance, my brother was on them and it caused him to have episodes of deep depression and anxiety, as well as make his acne dry and itch to a point where he would accidentally cut his face with his scratching or simply over his pillow or shirt. He had to stop the accutane after half a year, to which his severe acne did not improve and did come back with a vengeance. 3 years later and he still has severe acne with severe scarring. He has learnt to ignore it along with a lot of other health problems in his life. I on the other hand got very lucky and had minimal side effects. I did get severe drying and it was of course episodically bad at times before then calming down. I used aloe vera gel religiously which helped a ton, and I wore sun-protection as well to prevent sun burns which were hard to avoid at my school and work. I persisted through the ups and downs, and by the end of my Year 12, it had cleared up tremendously and my scars were even hard to see! The aloe vera gel also helped with scars actually. People began to notice and I got some generous compliments from girls! My social anxiety evaporated. I made new friends. I became more successful in everything I did. I got a girlfriend, moved to the city, and started at my dream uni and made the leap to studying science. I was Mr Confident. From that assessment alone, I was happy to conclude that the accutane was more than worth it. As you can probably see from my original comment, it honestly saved my life, and I'm forever thankful that it worked out for me. To this day, my acne has never come back with the genetic severity that plagues my family. It has come back in the form of a few simple spots - the general acne you see in the lucky kids. This would occur after a series of poor food choices. I honestly can't believe how good my skin is now. It used to be this red, blistering, thick carpet of craters and pus. And now it's smooth and even. I am so so so grateful for how it turned out. Good luck!

1) Slow and steady 10, 20, 40 mg,2) wear lip balm, 3) main side effect is dryness and sun sensitivity, stop using it for two days before you expect to be out in the sun for a long period of time, and then get back on it when you are finished 4) wear oil free sun screen preferably zinc based and sof 50 and above 5) lifestyle and eating... modify your dose according to your lifestyle…. alcohol stops Accutane from working, alcohol is a hystemine, cut back on sugars and food with high glycemic index...

I don’t have anything against accutane or any other drug. But I want to share what happened with me when I took this drug for just 10 days. My skin started getting dry, it was okay for the first 5 days and then the area below my eyebrows and my lips had started drying out so much, on the 10th day, there was a lot of blood coming from my lips because of all the dryness. I got a very bad headache as well. Another thing and the very important thing to note is, I didn’t have severe acne to begin with, still the doctor asked me take the medicine. When I started this, my acne had doubled in fact trippled. If you or anyone in your family have history of blood clotting, stroke, then I would strongly recommend not taking this tablet. I realised after taking this that, I am good having pimples on my face than going through this. Please think and be 100% sure and safe on what you decide at the end

It is good that you are taking the 10mg because that is the lowest dose. You say you took 10mg for 6 months and achieved clear skin. But it came back after a year. Since a 6 months treatment didn't work... why didn't you try 10mg for 1 year? But taking every 2 days for 2 years would be similar to a 1 year treatment. But you said in the beginning of your statement, "I've been on accutane 10mg 3 years every 2 days." How are you getting your medicine if you are not being seen by a doctor?

I remember when I had acne. It really sucked, to the point I didn’t even look at myself when I done my skin care routine

+MICHELLE ROSS Yeah.. just a time factor thing... I do most of my videos and filming during the day, doesnt interrupt me at all, esp with help from my colleagues. I ask the questions and they give better answers than I can!!!! Just the editing etc.. takes time. Cheers Michelle. Davin

+Lasers and Lifts by Dr Davin Lim A lot of KZbinrs get people to edit for them. Try a local university, especially if they have a film or media program. Good Luck

Dr.Davin, I'm freaking out here because am losing hair quite a bit and noticing that my hair is thinning. Is this normal? Plus my doctor told me to take hair genesis, is it any good?
@drdavinlim8 жыл бұрын
Sorry, I'm not a general dermatologist, best see one who has an interest in hair... lasers don't treat hair loss. See a regular medical dermatologist for help. All the best, Dr Davin Lim

Oh ok, but do have any information if hair-loss is directly related to Oratane?

With the dry lips, mine got so dry that I would wake up and my lips were so hard and peeling that lip balm wouldn’t do anything it just hurt them more. A tip for that is nipple cream for breastfeeding moms it is nontoxic and it is just basically a really thick moisturizing Vaseline.

Hi Dr Lim, massive fan. After years of dealing with acne, I am finally considering going on accutane. However my father took accutane when he was younger and has experienced some permanent symptoms that has meant his skin doesn’t self-moisturise at all and the skin on his face has been left looking flushed constantly. I am slightly worried that this reaction could be genetic and that it might be a bad idea for me to follow suit...what do you think?

I am 5ft2 and 110lbs. My dermatologist just started me out at 40mg. I hope that isn’t really bad.
@cslife66665 жыл бұрын
It's kinda bad at it's almost 1 mg / kgs, tell her you prefer to lower the dose and increase the length of the treatment, the efficacy of the treatment is related to total dosage not to daily dose, side effects are related to higher dose.

Jennifer Renee that’s what I’m getting started off with too in a month and I’m the same size and height, how has it been working for you?

I wish you were my dermatologist, I went to a dermatologist about my acne on my forhead and jawline, she found out that it was most likely hormonal, but still she prescribed me a blood test so she can put me on medication (not sure if its accutane or antibiotics). but to me that was a little odd and she did not explain. I'm still having doubts weather should I go on her treatment , or should I go to a gynecologist to get checked first and solve my hormonal problems, because that might solve my acne problem as well? , I don't know, any advice here would be really helpful :)

Hey there! I'm suffering from the same thing... Since ur comment is from two years ago can you please tell me what you did to solve the issue? Or is it still happening? I've had this problem since the last 2-3 years.

I was on accutane 20mg last year for about 3 months n had to stop due to serious depression and opt to topical tretinoin instead. My brother is still on accutane now, he’s doesn’t has depression and the result is amazing. My acne is clearing up as well while using tretinoin but i can say that my brother has much significant n somehow faster result than me

@@eshajain7915 thank you! Gladly I’m doing fine now. I recovered from depression within a month after stopping accutane. I never thought a pill can affect my mental health. This doesn’t happen to everyone tho, cause my brother is well while on accutane
