it is incredibly annoying to have to explain how acne has affected my mental health. people have been telling me "no one notices" or "you're gonna have a mask on anyway" they don't understand how it works for us! it is the root of my depression and anxiety. i refrain a lot from social situations just because i don't want to show my face. people that have never dealt with this do not understand and it is so frustrating for people to try to give me advice on it.

Yess ,it does triggered my mental health . People around me keep on saying ‘it wasnt a terrible breakout ,just wash your face using a clean water’ . I took Accurane 20 years ago and it was the best thing I ever did. My skin cleared beautifully within 3 months and the acne never came back. My only wish is that I would’ve taken it earlier and saved myself from depression it caused throughout my teenage years and into my 20s.

I love dogs i would recommend going to a dermatologist! i started taking accutane at age 16 (almost 17) i have been taking it for 3,5 months now (low dose) and it’s helping for sure! i have a lot of hyperpigmentation and scars but rarely get pimples anymore

I don’t get why you’re trying to spread all this over exaggerated information that doesn’t happen to most people. Like you should be smart when taking accutane. I’m not an expert but if you already have other skin problems/health problems then idk if you should take accutane. And also you should always start off with a low dosage not going in full blast. I love that you recognize how painful acne can be, both physically and emotionally. My psychiatrist won’t change my meds that potentially cause acne because “your depression might kill you, acne won’t” and it was so frustrating to hear. I’m depressed, at least partially, because my face hurts when I smile. Acne has been a huge contributor to my self esteem problems and social anxiety.

As a mental health practitioner, Dr Dray's explanation to acne-depression correlation is on point. Primarily, Accutane is usually prescribed only IF other products like adapalene or tretinoin did not work well with the person - then, this will be the last resort. To have this inference, this suggest that the person may suffered from acne for so long and already tried various products or means to resolve their issue however nothing works. Thus, this put them to have high risk to depression, for depression implies the feeling of helplessness.. the cycle of disappointment to varous products, frustration toward the self and and feeling of hopelessness, believing that at this point, nothing will work. Having "stubborn" acne can definitely lower the person's level of self-esteem. This is vital because when the self esteem is damaged, your view of yourself becomes dysrupted. That's when depression takes place. Another point is that since the person already has the potentials or tendencies towards depression, the purging state really sucks.. It will make the person feel unworthy again..

My dermatologist would only treat males when I saw this physician in 1977. It took me years to find out that it was eventually available to women. Both of my children were on Accutane in the 1990’s and it saved their skin. I’m so glad they didn’t have to experience the heartache of having acne and it saved them from scarring.

Craig, just remember to be kind to your skin and let the accutane do its job. Moisturize and don’t do anything crazy for the hyperpigmentation while you’re taking it. We have impaired skin barriers but medication, moisturizing and time will go a long way to heal. Oh and of course sunscreen 😉

First of all, I wanted to say how I appreciate your videos. They have really helped me simplify my skincare regimen. Accutane was something I used for 6 months as a teenager, over 20 years ago, and I wanted to share my experience with it as I was one of those with a bad experience in the hopes that others who are interested in trying it (or having their children try it) know what to watch for, just incase they are in the apparently low percentage of those who react poorly. My triglycerides did spike, so much so that my doctor had me end my Accutane treatment early (I was originally supposed to stay on it for 9 months). Also, It is true that my skin condition was very upsetting to me and caused much sadness and depression, but my depression changed while I was on accutane. This is actually what I would advise parents of accutane teenagers to watch for the most. My depression turned from sadness into almost a manic, which for me was very dangerous. Please pay attention to your children's moods very carefully while taking this and offer them even more love and support during this time. :)

Doctors profit from prescribing drugs. They do not profit from talking about the approximately 6-10 % of people who experience serious sustained side effects. If there is one thing I could do differently in my life, it would be to refuse to take accutane when it was pushed on me as a naive teenager.

Chronic joint pain is common, digestive issues leading to IBS, detrimental effects to liver and brain function and especially to the prefrontal cortex...you can research.

There are thousands of people on forums that describe in detail the severe, sometimes life lasting side effects of accutane. I took Accutaine when I was 20 and I was SO thankful I did! I had always struggled with acne and insecurities related. Looking back I did however become depressed while I was on the medication. It was gradual so I didn’t even notice how depressed I was. I became super isolated and only wanted to stay in bed. Never suicidal though. After I got off the Accutane my mood immediately returned to normal and that’s when I realizad that I did suffer with depression during that time. But I made it through. I honestly would do it again if I needed to. (Thank God I don’t!). Don’t let the scare of depression stop you! Just be conscious that it IS a legitimate side effect and you can get through it 💕

My daughter did a full course of accutane when she was 15. It worked well for a while then came back. We did another full course and our doctor said it would be a 95% chance to never deal with acne again. It came back her freshman year of college worse than ever. The whole process was so frustrating to us. I know it's emotionally damaging and I spent so much money trying to get her help. Finally a dedicated esthetician helped her find a routine that is working. After watching your channel I realize what some of our problems were: switching products too often, using too much.... Some people binge watch Netflix. I binge watch Dr. Dray. 😊

I used to say acne was a disease years ago and people would laugh at me so I just stopped talking about acne. I know some people believe accutane causes depression, but for me it was the opposite. Had severe depression and suicidal thoughts prior to going on accutane. Once my skin was clear, my depression lifted and I was so so much happier.

I'm in my final month of this medication and it has worked wonders for me! Haven't had so much as a blackhead since about month 2. I do have hormonal acne so I am concerned about recurrence but I feel like I have control now and will see my dermatologist if it recurs. As for side effects, dryness was the worst but not unbearable and, as you mentioned, I avoided the dollar menu and adopted such a healthy diet that my triglycerides actually went down! Hi I started in October last year and it’s the last couple of days before I come off. It’s my second time round so very scared about a relapse. Any recommendations on what skin you will be using once you come off accutane? My dermatologist has provided me with adapalane to use straight after accutane. Medical evidence shows this stops the acne returning if it has returned in the past.

Ive been struggling for about 4 years and I am seeing a new derm to hopefully be put an accutane. I had acne in 2018 then it went away then this year it came back full force, all over my cheeks. I have tried just about every antibiotic and topical treatment and it'll have a slight improvement then within two weeks relapse even WORSE. When I say I want to go on accutane people around me are like “huh why? No! What about the side effects? Your acne is not even that bad” What people don’t realize is that I have had acne for the past 10 years of my life and I’m 20 now. 10 years with acne, especially during such a sensitive time as teenage years, has taken a really big toll on my mental health. The first thing people see about me is my face, and people more often than not judge you by your face. I could literally see people staring at my oily face, girls and boys would make fun of me and accuse me of being dirty and not washing my face. What they don’t know is that I have spent hundreds of dollars on treatments and products and wash my face daily with the best products, I have literally tried everything and it’s not my fault!! I’ve become so self conscious of it! I wanted to go on accutane when I was 17 but I was getting laser hair removal at that time and the dermatologist told me that I can’t take it. Today I booked an appointment for next Monday, and I hope the derma will prescribe it to me!

I took accutane 5 years ago for my cystic hormonal acne, it was the best thing I ever did!! It changed my skin from super oily to normal to dry!! It also made me avoid the sun like crazy and wear crazy amounts of sunscreen!! So I feel like it was definitely a great thing!! I now use retin a and I take amoxicillin 1000 Mgs a day!! I have maybe a little pimple once every few months!! I hope I can eventually just use the retin a and drop the antibiotics one day because I know they aren’t healthy to take for ever!!

Accutane is the next step for me if spironolactone doesn't work. I've "exhausted all other options" according to my dermatologist LOL. My skin is finally clear after 4 months on spironolactone and I REALLY hope it stays that way. My skin tends to clear up for 1-2 years then freaks out again for a year.

When I went to see a derm I was told to take accutane. At the time I was in my teens and seeing that booklet totally turned me off. The derm seemed un willing to head out my concerns and educate me on the reason for her diagnosis. I appreciate this video very much. I had very bad acne when I was in highschool. That was indeed very difficult to cope with, was crying every day. After trying several dermatologists and treatments I finally found a dermatologist who helped me. I will never forget when he told me "do not worry, in 6 months you will be superbe!" I thought he was mocking me and honestly quite lost my hope for a miracle treatment. After 2-3 months my face was clearing but was also very lightful, i was starting to radiate. In 6 months my face was completely clean and I was indeed agreeing with the "superbe" promise of my dermatologist. I recognize everything Dr. Dray mentioned in this video. Must mention my doctor was doing monthly blood tests to keep me under control but I had literally no issue. It must be more than 15 years ago since my treatment and still no bad surprises. Hope my mesage gives some hope for people at the begining of their journey. Stay strong!

I used to hate myself, I was so embarrassed of my acne. Accutane and Tazorac cream saved my life. My insurance stopped covering Tazorac cream, I was told it was being used for wrinkles and it’s considered cosmetic so I would have to pay a lot. That ended my affair with Tazorac cream. Spot on with the depression that those of us with acne suffer from. It makes me not want to leave the house and i spend so much time obsessing over my skin picking at it making it worse and then the shame cycle starts and i feel even worse. Im almost 30 this month and still suffering with severe acne, have pcos and endometriosis. Just now able to afford to get on accutane because I am paying out of pocket for the medication. I have dealt with very oily acne prone skin and ultimately decided to give a session of Accutane a try. I'm currently on an 8-month accutane journey and about half way through! I loved this video - so much solid information from a trusted doctor. My main concern is alcohol consumption on the drug. I'm 25 years old and find it so hard to avoid drinking. I've definitely cut down and no longer drink casually. I don't binge drink but on a night out with friends I will have a couple drinks. Every time I wake up after a night out I always feel so guilty because I've heard so many different opinions! Thank you so much for what you do Dr. Dray. I am 28 years old and I am finally ready to start Accutane, though I have a trip to Cancun in February so I'll start after that. You are absolutely right about the mental distress that acne causes. I don't wear makeup so my acne is always on display and I can tell people look at my pimples when I'm conversing and I get so self-conscious. I've cut dairy and reduced my sugar intake but still get painful cysts. I definitely need to change to a more plant based diet, since I already have high cholesterol. Once again, thanks!

I would like to highlight that you are also not allowed to donate blood until 6 months AFTER you finish your treatment and its recomended to wait 1 year after finishing the treatment to do procedures such as electrolysis as it can increase your chances of scarring and sensitivity. USE SUNCREEN IN THE WINTER AS WELL AS YOU WILL BURN! IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO HAVE SPF ALL THE TIME! I took accutane in canada and this is what i was told/ read in the drug info pamphlet. I took accutane twice. I would reccomend to wait to take the treatment until you are an adult as i first did the treatment as a teen and had a relapse. When i was on the medication again, i had to get a lower dosage since i developed eczema but afterwards you should be just fine!

I've been recommended to go on Accutane twice by my dermatologist since I have pretty terrible hormonal acne and my scars take ages to fade. I used it as a teen. It was amazing! The only thing that helped. I had nodule acne on my face and back. It was a hassle to get the drug. I needed monthly blood test and jump threw hoops to get the insurance to cover it. It all so dried my skin really bad. It was at that time started using aquaphor on my lips. Although i stopped the accutane probably about a decade ago, i never stopped the aquaphor daily.

I took three courses of accutane. The acne was gone for the course duration, however it comes back a month after I stop the course, everytime. This is very dissapointing, I was very upset about it. I suffered from many side effects like sever headaches and damage to my hair. a lot of my hair fell out and it became very frizzy and brittle. It never went back to its previous state. I am thin and never eat fried food or peanut butter or fatty food. My dermatologist wanted me to go back on accutane for a forth time, but I refused. Why try the same medication a forth time if it failed three times allready? and I expressed how concerned I was about the side effects. He insited and said there is no other solution for me! That was really nice to hear. That was the last time I went to that Dr. I left and never took the perscription. this was three years ago. My hair is still damaged, it no longer grows evenly. the hair on the top of my head stops growing at shoulder length ! so I have to keep cutting my hair short. this is very strange. I stll have acne and a lot of scarring. I have also giving up on dermatologists and afraid to go back. I went with one problem and now I have two acne and damaged hair ! I have no words to describe how horrible my jurney have been with acne, I have had it since I was thirteen.

I have had acne rosacea for over 15 years (I’m 31 now). After years of taking different antibiotics which were a hit and miss, I decided to give roaccutane a chance. It’s been a month and I’ve noticed a massive improvement. I feel confident enough to leave the house without makeup on, that’s how clear my skin has become. My only worry and concern is that my acne rosacea will return once I stop taking the meds as rosacea is a chronic disease that doesn’t have a cure. 😔

Wow, I’m really late to this video. I’ve had my acne for about 10 years but it went totally crazy in the past 6, and I’m still not really sure why. I hate that I’ve wasted so much time but I kept having doctors tell me “it’s your bowel issues, so take these supplements” or simply treat me topically. I’m glad to have finally found a doctor who straightforwardly names my issue “acne” and suggested I treat it with oral retinoids. As for trauma, I’ve never really thought my acne is traumatizing me in any way. I’ve seen worse so I thought mine isn’t even that noticeable. However, when my doctor pointed out “wow, now I see how bad it is” when I smiled and my cheek acne became evident, that’s when I started questioning myself if I really went unaffected by it…

I took Accutane for one month and I already saw huge effects on my skin. My pores became smaller and I wasn’t as OILY like before and it felt so great but since of it’s side effects (before taking it the dermatologist usually runs you on a test) I had an increase in cholesterol, my lips got really dry to a point where like I can barely talk cause it would crack (but I easily combat this with lip balms) ,and my nose starting to bleed every night so I stopped using it. Although my dermatologist said it depended on me if I wanted to continue but then she said something about having acute pancreatitis and that itself made me draw the line. I really wish I could continue Accutane cause my skin is just not in a good spot right now.

Acne can definitely have a profound impact on someone's mood and can cause severe depression. I know this from personal experience. I actually did Accutane twice, once when I was 18 and another time when I was 22. Back when I did it (when the internet wasn't as vast as it is today), information about it was scarce. I actually had to do hours and hours of research before I even discovered it. I had gone to several dermatologists, and for some reason they never mentioned the treatment to me, despite the state of my severe acne, and my visible turmoil and depressive state. It's almost like they didn't want to tell me about it...like it was some big secret only "cool" people were privy to. Fast-forward to today, I am so happy I found it and did it. My skin if not perfect, but it is exponentially better than it was before. Not to mention the scarring I prevented by doing it.

I took accutane in 88, 92, and 96. I was 14 in 88 and dr gave me a much higher dose than I received in the 90’s and I was the smallest then (maybe dosages weren’t known then) I had every side effect you mentioned plus a depression. It would work great for a few years and acne would come back. Here I am at 45 still have acne (but bigger problems to worry about!) Love your videos Dr. Dray!

Unknown Unknown muscles cramps, depression, my lips cracked to bottom of chin and up to nose first time I took it. I looked like a clown. Dry eyes, vision changes especially at night I couldn’t see well. Arms and legs also were peeling off with red rash. Red bumps like. 2nd 2 times was different dermatologist and she gave me smaller dose in a slightly bigger body and it worked out much better. She also gave me special creams for lips I remember. Acne always came back in 3-4 years though.

I suffered from hormonal acne and unfortunately it is genetic on my dad side- I took it for 7 months- I also didn't take birth control on this because I had horrible reactions to previous birth controls and addressed this to the Dermo. We came to the agreement of just abstaining from sex. Sure, this stuff got rid of my acne. But, came back after almost a year. It was a nightmare for me... I lost almost 3 quarters of my hair. So, I am the RARE case. And my hair is still somewhat healing from it- 3 years later. I have signs of premature arthritis from it. I was completely fine and living life to the fullest before accutane and it was such a HUGE change for my body once it hit my system after 3 months. It took a month and a half after that for my hair to start REALLY falling out. It was a struggle to go to work because my joints were aching so bad from lack of hydration in my body. I couldn't even go out into the sunlight for longer than 30 minutes, I knew about this and the joint soreness. I was light on sun exposure, but the joint soreness was something I had to somewhat endure. I was desperate and took this, but didn't realize the true damage it could do. Please be careful... if you are thinking about taking it.

I am almost 59 years old and I had pretty horrible cystic acne when I was in my teens in the 70’s. I regularly visited my dermatologist and he put me on tetracycline and would lay me down right under a sun lamp (!!!!) in his office. I didn’t have the option in those days of accutane. I think I just missed it. I am Really scarred on my back as a result (not to mention the UV damage). So glad that people have this option today (as long as they can tolerate it).

Well, after diagnosed and treated for Rosacea that didn’t seem to work ( and couldn’t get Dr to consider or even look at my skin closer than from across the room 🙄 ) I had 2nd opinion. Hallelujah!! We tried Spironolactone first. It worked to a degree. My skin does look better in the outer cheeks / jawline area. However, the nose, apples of my cheeks, and chin still have very clogged pores and create so much sebum. I can remove it and the next day it’s back. Ugh this has been my life since 6th grade. In fact I remember a Dermatologist treating me with topical retinal because he stated my skin didn’t lift and shed skin cells like normal. Just what you were talking about!! Unfortunately, I was young and never followed up. All this to say I just started on Accutane. Although I’m a little nervous about some side effects ( especially the dreaded purge ), I am very excited for the future results. I have my arsenal of moisturizers, sunscreens, etc., and am ready! One question though. I recently began using a collagen serum at night which I believe I have benefitted from. Can I continue this while on the accutane?

Guys I’m 21, 1 month on accutaine, can’t get over that phantom regret of not taking the medicine 4 years ago. So many missed acquaintances and opportunities. Anyways I still got some years in uni left so i guess I should take the most of it as my skin clears up! It calms me that 21 is not the worst age for starting the treatment cuz many people go for it later. But man I still wasted time walking around with low confidence
