Why do women make less money than men? Is the gender pay gap a myth? Are women being descriminated against since they only earn about 80% of what average men earn? These are great questions.
In this video, I share four reasons that economists give that explain why women make less money than men.It turns out that it has a lot to do with their choices and preferences. I've included links to articles, studies, and the data below. Thanks for watching.

There is NO gender “wage” gap. The most overlooked issue with this discussion IS the name “gender wage gap”. It’s called a “wage” gap but that’s NOT what it is. It is a difference in EARNINGS between men and women. If you use the term “gender wage gap” then you’re already referring to the situation inaccurately. So the question is... why do women, on average, EARN less? Women EARN less than men for a number of obvious reasons that are completely natural and serve useful functions; - Women have children and leave the workforce either temporarily or permanently (which is perfectly natural and often preferred by the parents). When they return to work, it is often part-time and not full-time. - Women usually choose lower paying jobs working with people. Women choose these jobs because their natural psychological interests are generally more geared toward people and social interaction. Studies from early childhood development show that these interests and choices are biological and are not a product of upbringing and socialization. However, jobs that involve people, like healthcare or education, are less stable and predictable when it comes to scaling pay, generally resulting in lower paying positions - on the contrary, men generally work more dangerous and physically demanding jobs using objects, tools, or materials, which are more scalable in relation to pay. Men choose these jobs because they are naturally inclined to work with things (as opposed to people). Again, studies in very early childhood development show that these interests and choices are natural and come from our biology as opposed to how we are brought up and socialized. - Women typically work less hours than men for a number of reasons, some of which were previously briefly mentioned. - Women are less likely to ask for raises because they’re typically more agreeable and less assertive than men. That’s not an insult, being more agreeable than men is inherent to female nature and serves evolutionary purposes that are associated with childcare and nurturing. People who study economics, some basic math, psychology, sociology, and anthropology find none of this information new or surprising. So then why is it such a cultural phenomenon that seems to be dividing men and women from one another? Answer; politics. Which is why, in the 2016 US presidential race, the Democratic presidential nominee would consistently OPENLY lie to the world about this fake gender pay gap injustice against all women. Might it have to do with manipulating people (women mostly) to get votes while generally demeaning, blaming, and casting men as the oppressors of a patriarchy? WAKE UP people. The fate of or civilization WILL NOT fall to this resentment-based ideology.

Correct, many career fields that women pursue are low paying, in part because "women's work" is undervalued. And it's hard to say that women "voluntarily" don't pursue or continue to build careers in STEM when there is SO MUCH systemic barriers for them. Trust me, I know. I'm a woman aerospace engineer. It's not easy. We have to work way harder to overcome those barriers and many of us leave because of it. Most women don't stay in STEM fields nearly as long as men due to discrimination and harassment. And yeah, raising children gets in the way too, because employers don't accommodate for parental care enough and women's careers often suffer due to societal expectations to take up primary childrearing duties. Also, employers are less likely to provide father's parental leave than maternal leave, which sort of forces women to pick up the slack. It may seem like no one is forcing us to do that, but you can't completely ignore the influence of societal expectations. So basically what I'm getting from this is that the pay gap does exist, just not in the way you think. All of the things you've described are systemic barriers to women making more, not "choices" that we've "entirely voluntarily made as individuals." The facts may be right but you're not seeing the big picture here.
@sharonwatkinsofficial
@sharonwatkinsofficial Жыл бұрын
and it is just factually incorrect, because even when women do pursue STEM careers they earn less .... and there are many studies on that too. !!
@ericcarson342
@ericcarson342 4 ай бұрын
@@sharonwatkinsofficial They earn less because they work less hours on the whole (holding other variables constant, there are studies on that). On top of that wages get depressed because you flood the market with more labor supply which suppress wages (men's wages as well, you didn't mention that). A woman engineer who graduates this year is far more likely to get hired than a male engineer who also graduates this year, that is a fact (despite the fact 70% of an engineering class is male). That means a male engineer who graduates this year will have to put in far more applications than another woman who also graduates this year. Don't pick and choose, go all the way.

Can you make a video about how a bus driver in Zimbabwe makes 2 dollars per day , a bus driver in Greece 20 dollars per day, and a bus driver in Switzerland 200 dollars per day, when all of them do the same work?
@vanflyheit
@vanflyheit 7 жыл бұрын
Simplified example: Bus fare for a one-kilometer ride in Zimbabwe: 2-cents, in Greece: 20-cents, in Switzerland: 2-dollars. Bus operating cost in per KM driven in Zimbabwe: 2-dollars, in Greece: 2-cents, in Switzerland: 0.0001cents. People in Switzerland is willing to pay more for a bus ride than in Zimbabwe. The cost of running a bus in Zimbabwe (crappy roads, dilapidated and inefficient bus) is greater than in Switzerland (good road, efficient bus, helped by the govt). The bus owner in Switzerland has more money to pay for his driver. Of course, there are far more explanation than this. Sorry for the bad English.

Road efficiency cannot account for the wage differences present. Also, my question was not specific. I used bus drivers as an example of the wage difference between poor and affluent countries.
@jonsamabro
@jonsamabro 7 жыл бұрын
This is typically because the wages earned by the bus driver have to compensate them for at least as much as the opportunity cost they face by working. The fundamental technologies used by barbers haven't changed much in the last century, they can't perform more haircuts in a given period of time, but they've seen their wages increase because you have to pay that barber to NOT take their next best alternative, which is likely an area that has seen large productivity increases. The same goes for the bus driver, the Greek bus driver's outside opportunities are much worse than the Swiss driver's, so they face lower wages.

I'm a 25 girl, unmarried, and was very happy about this until I realized the down side. It's like living far from your family - yes, you feel independent, unrestricted, and able to live for yourself. But with age, you realize that living for yourself is entertaining, but not fulfilling. You don't need to rush into marriage, and when you're married don't rush out of the marriage. But the journey of life spent with another gives you something precious that can't be bought. That companionship, even if it ends badly, is better than ending alone. When I was younger, I looked at all the divorce out there and misery and hatred between exes, and I thought “I'm not going to make some one miserable, I'm not going to spend my life with someone I hate” …well, that's like saying “I'm not going to drive a car because of all the accidents.” Thats not the answer - the answer should be to wear seatbelts, take precautions. My resolution SHOULD have been “I'm going to love my spouse, for whoever he is, and I'm going to give him my best.” Instead, I chose to live for me, and that's who I got …just me. Find someone to love, and give them your best. Like an ocean voyage, it may not last forever but at least you gave it your best shot. And there may be many perils and storms, but atleast you survived them with someone. The relationships that I've had were very special to me and I wish I had gotten married. Instead, I married my “independence”. The people that get divorced and hate each other, they didn't know how to love, they were selfish - it wasn't “marriage” that created the misery, it was their unwillingness to love each other. Love is willing to accommodate (not a reluctant willingness, but an eager willingness), even when you don't really want to. Even when there's no gain from it. Even when the other person is annoying, or stinky, or exhausting. And when you can love your spouse like that, chances are your spouse will, too. And yes, it's POSSIBLE that you might love a person who doesn't, or can't, love their spouse …and that is sad. It really is. But I'd rather go to the Olympics and fail, than never go at all. Love is patient, love is kind. Love does not envy, is not boastful and is not conceited. Love is not rude or self-seeking. I'm waiting for the right one. If you agree with what I said, then contact my whatsapp: +447901380061 I travel around the world, and my love won't be limited by district. Never Ever Part As Lovers.

I personally believe that women work less hours, choose lower paying jobs, choose worse decisions in education, and have worse jobb experience. But I don't believe this is because women are naturally bad or something, I think it's because society has certain expectations for women, e.g. someone who takes maternity leave is going to make less than someone who doesn't and in society women are expected to be the ones who care for children. So it's less employers being sexist and more society being sexist and 'nudging' women in certain directions.

Yes women decide to have children but they never decide it alone. It is always a woman AND a man who decide TOGETHER to have children. It is not fair that women are the ones who are disadvantaged by that decision only because of their biological ability to bear the child. Women should not be regarded as a cost factor to a company because they become pregnant and take time off work for a certain period of time. In fact, especially in our western society where families become increasingly smaller women (and men!) should be encouraged to have children and the business world should adapt to families and not set barriers for women in terms of lower wages, inflexible working hours and getting the job in the first place!

"No one is forcing woman to have children and became the primare carer" No one? Really? Society don't only expect woman to be the primary carer for children but teachs this is their role in a family unit since being a small girl. I can agree with most your arguments but i can't agree with this. Let's stop pretending that children shouldn't be a equaly share responsability in a two-working household and it's woman choice to have more responsability in caring for the kid.

He made it clear that the $0.80 is a myth...that the gender pay gap as explained by liberals, feminists, etc... is a myth. He basically said that it comes down to individuals with bias that account for about a $0.04 pay gap. I'd agree with him that it is something that still needs to be addressed...but repeated the same lies about it, again and again, does not help solve the problem...it hurts...because those that would participate in a solution want nothing to do with a solving a problem that is mostly a fabrication

To be fair, there are loads of cultural biases (per feminist i.e.- patriarchy) that really don't factor in except maybe considering the irrationality of the market, and these aren't specific to women (blacks vs. whites earnings, whites vs. asian earnings). Consider women make up 70% of the engineers and scientist in Iran. The question seems to be more if affirmative action and special programs favoring women (or whatever) are really the best approach as from the same statistics you could equally argue the opposite- that men have less options in the job market due to cultural bias.

I live in Australia and at the primary school my Mum works at she told me that the male teachers with little experience get paid more than their female counterparts with a lot more experience because they are not many male primary school teachers. Do you see this as inequality or basic supply and demand where a product high in supply (female primary school teachers) is inevitably worth less than its scarcer equivalent (male primary school teachers). I don’t mean for this question to be offensive in any way.

I agree with everything he said but I have also heard stats saying that women earn less FOR THE SAME EXACT JOB which means not only is she making less than the guy who got a promoted over her, she is also getting less than the guy she is working alongside with. How much of that do you think is gender discrimination and whether its blatant. Also, like mentioned women take on more of the workload at home or with kids. How much of that is societal pressure and men taking things for granted as they are and how much is it women voluntarily choosing family over work and putting this pressure on themselves (altho obviously the two feed into each other)

How about if a few women start businesses and pay their female employees whatever they want? Suggested research question: Do firms with women CEOs pay their female employees more than firms with male CEOa? If women get $.79 for the same job for which a men get $1.00 I’ll hire only women and, with lower labor costs, I’ll run the firms with male employees out of business. If many firms do that then the increased demand for female employees will cause their wages to rise.

I feel like illicit biases and societal norms play a huge role in the pay gap. One apparent factor is the lack of a female presence in fields like stem being due to illicit bias and stereotypes that cause women to stay away from such fields. Discrimination is still at play, it just has more steps now and the end result is now seemingly legal, which is maddening. Same as the stereotype that women have to have children, or that women with children would be better suited for childcare rather than working while men arent, so they shouldn't be given the opportunity to work or should be paid less. Again, seemingly flying under the radar of the law and just as infuriating. I feel like eliminating these biases is the key to eliminating the pay gap, as it discreetly forces women away from opportunity unfairly due to sexism and discrimination. This may not be the whole cause for the pay gap, but it seems to be a major factor.

Maybe the reason they're in lower paying professions is that they've been told their whole life to go into a profession where they aren't a leader or to make less money because males should be the breadwinner? Why don't we just start paying those lower paying professions more if we see that women take those positions in a disproportionate amount to men? I see where you're going with this but it's still not good enough reasoning. That 80 percent also accounts for the jobs where women hold the exact same position as their male counterparts and still get paid less. It doesn't make sense.

❗❗!PLEASE READ!❗❗ You cant compare a school teacher and a tech scientist they are going to make a different pay, because they are doing different jobs and work for completely different companies and sadly the demand for a tech scientist is larger than for shcool teachers so whether it is a man or women in either role... the tech scientist will make more money because their demand is higher. The gender inequality pay gap is about .....say two pizza delivery drivers one man one women and the man gets paid 1.75 and the women 99 cent (tips dont count because it is up to the buyer) for doing the same exact job and vice versa that is the income inequality gap. When the employer discriminates the workers from one another because of their gender and pays one higher then the other and one way lower than the other. In summary : 2 workers same job opposite genders one gets paid more than the other because of sex discrimination and one lower for the same reason. Get what im saying👍☺ hope you do

So instead of pointing out just the flaws in his research, why don't you offer your strategy for how he should have gone about his research. Solutions to the problem not just the problem itself. He also is not the only economist who has presented similar data. Thomas Sowell has dispelled this "gender pay gap" myth countless times and using a ton of research in his books, articles, and studies.

Also, there are wildly different recovery periods for women after pushing a human being out of their bodies which could account for them getting “stuck” with the kids.

As a man who co parents his daughter in divorce, and had to spend $60,000 for that privilege in court… I will say that it can be sorted out after the breastmilk phase is over.

Part of that last 4% figure could be trained since like you said other studies show that women negotiate less tgan men do. So they're more likely to take the wage as offered.

"STEM" fields are not all good for jobs; it's very problematic to lump all the STEMs together. Science majors, for example, are often just as bad as the humanities for employment. And, by the way, to further your point, the only social science major that does have strong job prospects/salary potential is, wait for it, economics! Which, by the way, is also the only male-dominated social science major.

I agreed with everything up until he made the assumption that adding women to tech creates diversity of thinking. Is Clifford actually saying that men all think alike and women all think alike so we must have gender diversity to diversify ideas??? HMM. Sounds a bit sexist...

He's actually not wrong, it's not that men all think alike or that wen all think alike, it's more like women think differently then men Men disregard small stuff if it push us forward faster while women tend to think about the small minute details

Man, just a correction: It was one of your points that women should be encouraged (or sometimes pushed) to participate in stem fields. The academic literature says though that increasing bio-demographic diversity decreases team performance. www.researchgate.net/publication/228389271_The_Effects_of_Team_Diversity_on_Team_Outcomes_A_Meta-Analytic_Review_of_Team_Demography

Only one fact: The company is based on the idea of creating as much money as possible with the lowest input. Here in my head come question arises why then there are not many unemployed men? And then a company employed only women if they are paid less for the same job. I ask someone to explain this because I'm too stupid to understand this.

"In the US, there's not really a formal or institutional bias against women, but there's clearly an unspoken, and even unconscious bias that keeps women from getting certain jobs and earning higher incomes." I wonder what is the difference here between "institutional" and "unconscious" bias and how do you know that's the case?

so we can switch gender roles? so a company needs someone to put in long hours at office for a company breaking deal. who do you pick a man or a pregnant women? a woman is pregnant 9 mth out of 12 month year then gets 2 months leave after baby.. so one full month of hard work compared to 12 mths from a man.. a woman with no kids makes same per hour as a man ..

The 20 cent U.S. wage gap, isn't true in all countries. What is the difference between Italy, New Zealand, and the U.S.? Those countries's gender wage gap is around 5 to 6 cents on the dollar. Aren't there policy differences?

One of the main factors is that men are vastly more motivated to make money than women. One study asked men and women to complete 20 SAT-style math questions. In one group, they were all paid the same for showing up. In another, they were paid a certain amount based on each correct answer. When they were paid the same, men performed very similarly to women. When they were paid based on the number of correct answers, the men's scores blew the women's scores out of the water

I would NEVER hire a woman , unless she is 2 times better than the next top aplicant , or she agrees to work for half the pay.

Hey Mr Clifford! There are a variety of reasons why women don't pick STEM jobs and don't keep them as they have to deal with harassment and isolation. Check out CODE: Debugging the Gender Pay Gap. It's an excellent documentary that looks at the both quantitate and qualitative research to explain it. Also it's not "horrible people" that have a gender bias when hiring, it's often unconscious. Orchestras in order to try and limit bias would audition behind a curtain, but men were still being hired disproportionately more. Were they just better? Nope! Once they put down carpet and men couldn't hear the heels of women, the number of women jumped from 10-25% all the way to 50%! Just because we can't detect unconscious bias all the time, doesn't mean it's not there or that it's nefarious. Food for thought! DFTBA!

Why should women be better represented in IT? If they don't want to do it, why should the state make them? All these things achieve is to push men out of jobs they want to do to artificially put women in. Gender quota systems in the workplace are not a way to make a happier or more productive society/workforce. You employ the best people for the job regardless of male or female. To do otherwise is retarding your businesses productivity. To say they would make better products by employing women is not true. If it was then they would.
