This video expresses my heart when I insert the disc into the console. I played this title when it was released, around 1999/2000, with my father. He treasured his Japanese copy because I wasn’t very careful with things (I was very young). ACE COMBAT 3 is what sparked my passion for computing, electronics, electronic music, and I’d add, a certain admiration for UIs. It is my absolute favorite video game, but I think that’s already clear from my nickname :) I was amazed when I logged in for the first time with the soundtrack "Linkage"; it really felt like I was controlling a real computer. The gameplay, the story, and the technical execution are unparalleled. There is no other masterpiece like this one. It’s completely impossible. In 2016, along with my closest friends, we decided to translate it into English and Italian... We worked hard to do it justice, but every second was totally worth it because of people like you. We are immensely grateful that you used our patch. I’m eagerly waiting for the second part. -Naitoraven951 (LWT Staff)

That is definitely an honour. Thank you very much for the patch, and the nice words.

27:11 Minor correction/elaboration: While the Electro-Neuron-Synapse-Interface is what most pilots in the setting use to fly (the majority of SARF included), it is non-intrusive and functions by using external sensors to track the activity of the pilot's reflex and motor neurons. What Rena has is instead an Opto-Neuron-Synapse-Interface, which jacks her central nervous system directly into the aircraft, effectively turning it into an extension of her body. This also makes her uniquely vulnerable to being taken over by the nanomachines in Bug Hunt, and I believe realizing that is the turning point in her arc. Midway through this video I realized that you were the one who made the two videos on ACZ and 04 that I quite liked, and I even remember asking about AC3 in a comment I left on one of them. Then I checked and saw that you've since made videos on the original two games! I'll definitely be watching those soon. Anyway, really looking forward to Part 2.

That makes quite a bit more sense. I feel bad I missed that, now.

I swear the writing and production on these videos get better and better. I played 5 not knowing this series had so much depth, so learning about it through such great writing is peak

AC3 might not have my favorite story in the series, but it's by far the game I find the most fascinating out of all the entries. I'm always bewildered at how ambitious it is, and also by just how well it holds up in spite of that ambition. The only complaint I have are the AI missiles. Thankfully, the developers prevented it from being too egregious by making the AI incredibly passive on all difficulties, and by inflating your health pool on Normal and below. I'd have prefered real solutions, but I suppose they must've ran out of time. Can't wait for your next video.

I love how detailed and thoughtful AC3's UI is, I was about to comment on how it remind's me of Wipeout's design and Vectorheart deaign language but you already brought it up so early on too. The Menus swapping depending on what faction you're aligned to, the little jingles when you log on. Just dripping with personality

Good luck with other Endings. It's a very long and rich game to unpack.

The wait's been worth! As always superb analysis, this game's story and themes are pretty complex to me but these videos help a lot to give them cohesion and appreciate what they represent

I've been looking forward to this since I saw your Ace Combat Zero and 2 analysis videos. You really bring a very interesting perspective to this community that while getting more popular as of late, don't really have any long form videos just talking about its narrative themes and whatnot.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the game director of the new ace combat that is still in devolpment his name is Takuya Iwasaki, he was the project director of ace combat 3

Specifically for the next game, which is interesting. The prequels are quickly catching up to ACE3's "modern day." But with so many games being cancelled at BAMCO lately... I dunno.

@GizouGitai I doubt that be true ac7 went decade of development after delays and almost cancellation and bandai knew ac7 was a well selling ace combat games. The problem of developing an ace combat game is that the team is small e and license for fighter jet is difficult

If licensing was this easy, we would have gotten a remastered version of PS2 port on the newer gen and also for PC

Very good video. the exploration of the NATO paper in the context of indoctrination too was a fantastic angle, and this is probably one of the best literary character explorations I think I've seen of AC3 -- which is kind of bonkers, all things considered?

Not gonna lie, when it came to the child indoctrination segment I can appreciate the clarification of Disions intent NOT being sexual in any way. It's still sinister regardless, but it's for making a child soldier, nothing more or nothing less. I've watched the 1930's version of all quiet on the western front front, easily a pretty accurately depressing depiction of war as a meat grinder, I think I remember this scene where the protagonist, Paul Bäumer doing the opposite of Dision in front of a class of soon to be recruits, going on about the horrors of war with an expression not too dissimilar from the infamous 1000 yard stare. Telling people that they will go on to be glorious and do great things is usually just dressing war up in royal capes and gilded swords so to speak. It maybe an eye roll to say it, but war is abysmal, it runs off of consuming human life, it produces unthinkable irrational horrors, and it can ruin the human soul.

My head canon for endings were: E -> B -> D -> A and C. Ending C is the best left for last.

Is this going to be a strictly story/thematic analysis of AC3? One thing that makes AC3 stand out to me compared to other games in the series is how *weighty* the aircraft you control feels. It isn't as weightless and snappy compared to AC2 or even AC4 after it. I felt like I had to manage my acceleration more to avoid crashing into the ground on gun runs/low passes because my plane would not instantly respond to pull out of a dive if I was going too fast. Another thing was how the missiles track targets. They actually head to a predicted point of impact ahead of where the enemy plane is instead of chasing the enemy planes tail like a rabid dog. It's such a neat touch of realism for a PS1 era game but it made judging if my shot would connect more difficult so I felt like I had to fire an extra one for the self-assurance the enemy was already dead. Also, sub-weapons! AC3 introduced them, did any in particular stand out to you? Would you include any specific Futuristic sub weapons that would only fit in AC3's world, even more advanced than the TLS or railgun introduced in future entries in the series? Did you have any thoughts on how it felt to actually manuver your plane as well?

I like the enthusiasm. As an opinion, I do like how ACE3 controls. And I think it suits the game greatly. There's a dedicated section in a later part about the controls, when it's more relevant to other topics. It's a detailed section, too. I wouldn't want to undermine my own efforts by typing it out here.

While it's perhaps outside the scope of an analysis of AC3 (JP) and its achievements, I think it'd also be good to look at the overseas version a bit, and perhaps provide something of an absolution for it despite all the things it lacks compared to the JP original. As more and more people have become aware of what they were missing, the desire to bring more attention to it has in turn led to, in my opinion, disproportionate lambasting of the international release, despite it still being a fun game by virtue of having the gameplay of AC3 (JP). As justified as it may feel to criticise what we got in light of the mundane and lame reasons for it existing (Namco not having the resources nor the guts to adapt AC3's storyline in full to other languages), AC3 is still AC3. But that's just my opinion, and I eagerly await the rest of the videos regardless of the opinions they contain.

1. Thank god for Load Word Team's work on making the complete localization patch for Ace Combat 3. I hope their work inspires other PS1 modders/devs to do similar complete translation patches to other Japan exclusive games. 2. I pray Bandai Namco and Project Aces will one day port all of the earlier Ace Combat games to modern platforms. 3. I haven't played Ace Combat 6. I'm hoping Xenia Canary will one day have bug free audio in the cutscenes. 4. Question: After you're done with AC3, What Ace Combat game will you analyze next? or maybe even Project Wingman?

3. If you can nab any kind of Xbox that's 360 onward, ACE6 is fully backward compatible on all models. I can confirm. 4. I'd like to do ACE6. I did have footage and scripts written for ACE CROSS RUMBLE (3DS) and SKY CRAWLERS (Wii) that I dropped because I couldn't do those games justice. I was the wrong person for the job, at those times. I do recommend Sky Crawlers, though. After ACE3, I don't want to touch ACE for a while. I've been staring at ACE3 for a very rough and unfun year, at this point. But the next planned big video project after ACE3 is still technically a flightsim.
