I don't think that's true. I think it would be in the realm of other Fighter Jet games like HAWX, because though the soundtrack is mostly there, and the story is okay; the gameplay is not fun. About half the dogfights in the game are scripted, Bomber missions are scripted, and everything else is either on rails or controls like ass and is nauseating because of the camera (helicopter missions). Multi-player might be good, but since it's inaccessible, there's no point bringing it up. I do like some of what the game did though, not every evolution it brought to the table was bad. Most of what it did was executed poorly, but not bad as a concept. Speaking protagonists (and multiple protagonists) are something I am dying to see come back, because it was desperately needed in 7.

I really loved it a lot, which gave me an interesting view on the rest of the series, since pretty much every other fan had come from previous games. I can see why people didn't like it, but the game will always have a special place in my heart.

Well i for one loved this game. It's actually the game that got me into the franchise. I prevously played HAWX which isnt a bad game either, just Ace Combat was better in many aspects. The story, the music and the gameplay was just better and it stuck. Now i am trying to find a way to play the older AC games (actually got to borrow AC5, not started it yet though.) Im also playing infinity. Either way, sure Assault Horizon was very different, but was it honestly really *that* bad?

And then, the final fight forced you to DFM all the way through where you can't kill Akula anyway until the scripted moment that he fired his missile at the white house. And then you can kill him, he doesn't even pose a threat at that point. He just flies in a straight line waiting to be shot down. The old ace combats never did scripted fights. It was all down to the player. Fighting the Arkbird, Hrimfaxi/Scinfaxi, the Belkan Ace squadrons in 5 or any of the ace squadrons in AC0, the final showdown with Pixy. Taking on the P112 Agaion and it's escorts in AC6. These are all memorable fights.

The point of not having a face was meant to be you couldn't connect. You didn't know who or even what you were. sort of like in ace combat three where in the end you realize you were never a real person to begin with, you were literally a weapon, a creation of bottomless destruction and unstoppable ability. And each game after was meant to build on that. The character you play as isn't you, it is an entity of war, even your partners feared you. hero or villain those that opposed you had one fate

Yes I have, there are actually a good few that if I looked through my library I could get for you. There are even many mute faceless characters in books too, like the girl in bandages, the sea tank story of a mermaid struggling to love a man where she never said a word nor is do you see her face, and the story of xie where the character was literally a horse. yes they do make good stories, you just need to make good use of them. Faces just makes something more easily translated into emotion.

DFM displays the most about the dogfight, the gun. You almost never use the gun in the rest of Ace Combat games, well save for Infinity.

Agreed. If anything, it feels like Call of Duty: In Airplanes! Starting with the regenerating plane health. Then there's the fact that external cameras moving around like a cinematic makes concentrating on what you're trying to do extremely difficult. And I don't like the on-the-rails parts. If you want to take control from me for a plot event, cut away to cinematics. It just frustrates me to know I could technically dodge that missile in nightmare, but won't ever get to.

I cant help to not write in seeing all the AH apologist fawning over it like its some hot stuff. Folks who probably never even played any of the original AC games. Never got in to the original atmosphere, awesomeness of strangereal with great stories, originality and freedom. ACs that let you fly and fight how you want, when you want, with what you want. First of I love Ace Combat. Well the ones that were made before the franchise became Assault Horizon on its original fanbase - Call of Duty style with aircraft on railroads and then Infinity pay to play no story multiplayer online sh**. AH had good graphics and a good soundtrack but that is all it had. Gameplay was straight up sh**. Simple fact, no going around that. It was short compared to any one of the original strangereal ACs. Oh god the missions. AH had a very few missions. They were long, tedious, dragging on and repetitive with you having to constantly play railroad planes. Instead of using more mission of reasonable size with varying engaging content. Almost every mission had in it, in order to make it dramatic and artificially difficult, to protect this super fragile objective, incompetent and incapable of staying alive for five seconds and do it fast too while a milion of enemies are targeting only you. At other time you had to destroy a milion of super durable targets before they crossed an imaginary line while all their escorts target only you. Funny how I was supposedly having 3 wingmen plus some other allies but I never realized it because they do NOTHING EVER well except for needing you to rescue them. You can not even give them any order despite being one USAF Col. Bishop lol Story? Wait this thing actually had a story? Must have missed that. Oh, wait the cliche hollywood bullsh**, right, that story, now I remember. But seeing as AH was a test preparation for crapco to go full cheap on multiplayer alla COD/Battlefield style money grab that lame writing makes sense. Throw a bunch of players in to an arena and let them kill each other over and over. Who needs story if you have deathmatches. Rinse and repeat, reap profit! Selection of aircraft was small compared to original ACs. Many franchise stalwarts were missing and you were restricted in selection further by aircraft type/mission and bad weapon load out compilations. And let us not forget that many popular planes that were originally always included in standard lineups were now DLC money grabs along with many shty paint jobs. LAME All enemies in AH had infinite flares and gravity defying maneuvers rendering the L2/R2 insta railroad mode a must use. In old ACs this super evasion or armor hax was mostly not so present or if it was in rare cases it was reserved only to the final bosses or other rare special targets. Helicopter, door gunner, AC-130 and bomber missions were out of place. They might as well throw in a drone a transport plane or better a civilian air liner alla Joint Assault cuz we all loved being Olivieri's private 747 pilot.... Strangereal was better simply for it allowed freedom of storytelling and it was not insulting to anyone since none of the factions were real. Plus it allowed for a rich variety of enemy fighters. I am all for NATO trust me but fighting against nothing but Migs and Sukhois of "evil" russians gets kinda boring after a while. And while original ACs allways had some original fictional super planes AH got PAK-FA, seriously? Like that is anything groundbreaking. The few other re-used super fighters were, here it comes, DLC content! What a surprise right? AH had no superweapons. No aerial, naval or land behemoths. No tunel missions. No cool protagonists and no bad ass enemy aces. Bishop was a sh** lead. He sucks, simple. The no name, no face, no voice, leads were better. It allowed for better immersion. If nothing else they were not gong on your nerves every five seconds with their bullsh** issues. Unlike this middle age crisis riden burned out over complexed cliche excuse for a pilot. Sometimes no character is better than a sh** character. Also his constant sh** comments. On purpose I used it too. How you like it sh** huh? Cool yes? Dont get the wrong message though. I have a lot of respect for actuall real life pilots be they american or other nationality and that is one of the reasons why this cast of sh**heads in AH pised me off so much. Well that went on longer than I thought. There is more but I'll cut it here. Nobody will read it anyway and quite frankly I don't give a rats ass. What with the influx of ten year old gamers/keybordwariors who think they know everything best weren't even born yet when the "real" ACs I grew up with were released. Damn, I am starting to feel like an old geezer here. Anyway, at least getting it out of me relieve some stress.

To some. Hell in most of the games of ace combat notice how they hardly even alluded to your character talking at all. in fact I can only remember them acting like you talked in unsung war. Inface, in zero the story revolved around the fact that he never spoke or even showed himself. people KNEW he never spoke, and so people kept wondering why. The only person who knew anything was pixy, and even he didn't know much. characters with faces don't make better stories. Better stories do.

I really want to like Assault Horizon, but DFM just feels too forced for me, the amount of ammo you have is absurd, and planes don't feel unique in the way that they handle. Sure, how well they turn can affect how easy killing aces is in DFM, but it isn't anywhere close to the amount that it mattered in previous games. I miss the way the Typhoon came alive and turned into a fast-rolling, hard-turning monster above Mach 1, and how you had to carefully avoid bleeding too much speed in the Sukhois in AC6. I miss having to manage what I used my missiles or special weapons on, lest I run out at the end of a mission. I miss having to change tactics and make boom-and-zoom attack runs on Yellow Squadron because they could out-turn pretty much anything short of the X-02. And the story just sucks.

@jackie901 Admit canon that she came from an alternate dimension? Is this a joke? The Strangereal universe of the previous AC games is sci-fi, so it could serve as a plot point in that, but Assault Horizon is intended to be set in something resembling our real world, and I dunno about you, but I haven't met any dimension-hoppers.

Man its been so long since ive played this, even though it was a pretty bad game, the story, music, and graphics are still pretty good
