Currently have a 2018/19 zenbook 15 with broken hinge because the plastic broke. I wish that hinge review was the standard on youtube for every laptop. Good job!

I have a 2014 fanless model. It is all metal, but the screen and performance are terrible. The trackpad aged poorly too.

I have the one just after that, the 14 inch, with the Ryzen 4500u. Much more solid machine, battery is worthless, though. Still performs well enough in 2024 for school stuff.
@und4287Ай бұрын
The build quality is surprisingly not terrible, didn't really expect it from a machine like this...
@CataclysmZAАй бұрын
The nice thing about it is that Acer should have the same level of build quality for the more expensive Aspire 3 laptops because the baseline model starts off solid. Aspire 5 has been a solid mid-range option for a very long time too.

Everything is made on a budget but at least they don't change premium like other brands.

I LOVE how you go above and beyond about the build quality on the laptop. I had a Toshiba laptop for 10 years and i want to upgrade and i've noticed how a lot of modern laptops had decreased in quality and most reviews never check the same aspects that you do.
@oggilein1Ай бұрын
this "screen lifts up the laptop" thing is a trend i hate so much, especially becasue we had a much better solution before: just putting some conotured rubber feet on the bottom of the laptop. they're soft enough that they dont dig imto your lap, wont scratch up whatever surface you put the laptop on, and prevent it from sliding about. sometimes the lo-tech option really is the best and companies seem to have forgotten that in their mindless pursuit of making the laptop a couple mm thinner when closed
@imaginativeban2374Ай бұрын
Surprised hinges are so good for such an otherwise unremarkable laptop. Great to see laptop manufacturers put more work into this crucial failure point *cough cough* MSI
@kernel_inpage_errorАй бұрын
I guess that’s because Acer laptops from 4 years ago suffered from the hinge plague quite badly. But it is still nice to see them fixing the issue, or at least addressing it as good as they can without making the structure cost over a half of the device
@imaginativeban2374Ай бұрын
@@kernel_inpage_error nice to see this indeed, especially considering they did it before some legal issues arose like with MSI and HP

Your review is much, much better than so many others out there. All substance, no fluff. I had an Acer Swift whose hinge failed after 14 months, suspiciously just 2 months after the warranty expired. On Acer's forums, numerous customers have the same issue. Even though theirs were under warranty, Acer refused to replace them. This has been going on since at least 2016. I'll never buy from them again.

I use the same laptop at work everyday but with even lower config: 2-core Intel Pentium, 128 GB memory and 4GB RAM. I fully agree with the input device description: they are surprisingly usable. The display is OK as well for the work use. And it does the job well (it is used to control a custom built CNC machine). The only thing I had to do is to reinstall the Windows clean. So, for the money (399 euro) it is the very usable laptop for the task: run the CNC-control program and sometimes Notepad to change G-code files, so RAM use is never higher than 2.8 GB. Had only one BSoD in 12 months (no CNC work was running at the moment, luckily).

For the us, I found that the zen3 model here comes with an ips pannel, so it should be bearable. There are also a bunch with tn pannels and more powerhungry zen2 cpus. I assume that is what the high performance setting is for. I still like the idea of having that high power option if you want to just get the headphones and push your system. It is better than a thin system that can be ordered with high power chips, but runs them so poorly it is outperformed by cheaper laptops. Sadly thre are no 16 gig zen3 versions. For office use I would get the zen3 ips, tape something soft at the lid and use it for basic stuff on the go.

I have an older model with the 3350U (Zen+) but strangely mine does have an IPS screen, an extra RAM slot , and space for a 2.5 inch drive. So maybe it's something they phased out of newer revisions. Also IMO the plain design is fine by me. It's a laptop you can bust out in a coffee shop or classroom and not get glared at, so it gets the job done.

I've bought the acer Aspire 5 with the i712600H, does the things said in this video extend to the aspire 5? I know that the battery dosen't last for 9 hours while idle but i would think that the difference between the 3 and 5 is the CPU category and the screen depending on the model, right? Kind a niche request but would love a video where you go over it. Keep the good work man, love your videos.
@kernel_inpage_errorАй бұрын

So the screen is the big downside for an office user? If it is replacable you could place the order with a more expensive acreen or replace it yourself and you have a laptop to last you a couple years. You could also tape some soft stuff at the bottom of the lid. Might look janky, but will heavily improve comfort
@oggilein1Ай бұрын
replacing it yourself would require considerable care as the front bezel is usually held in place by plastic clips, glue, and pure willpower so getting it unclipped to be able to swap the panels without damaging the bezel is a challenge. go with the better screen from the factory if at all possible

If only my 2020 acer aspire 5 had at least something close to the amount of plastic around screwholes of even that msi gf63 .. It also had a tight hinge, which likely contributed to having to (unsuccessfully) epoxy those screwholes back in less than a year after purchase

I get why you think USB 2.0 ports are annoying, especially if they take up space on a laptop's edge that could have been used for an ethernet port, SD card reader etc. But even though USB 3 *ought* to be backwards-compatible, you still occasionally find USB peripherals that don't work correctly (or at all) unless they're plugged into a USB 2.0 port. So I like having a nonzero number of them :)
@Spurdospaerde692Ай бұрын
For such rare(?) occasions, wouldn't a USB 2.0 hub connected to a USB 3 port work?

Had to choose between a lenovo ideapad with this exact specs and a aspire 5 with a intel based model, i3 11th gen with a mx 350. The cpu is pretty shite with only 2 real cores and 4 threads, did not aged well at all. But the Aspire did have upgradable ram and storage while the lenovo did not and the mx350 while being underpowered, the cpu often becomes the bottleneck and honestly it would beat any igpu of that price point so its good enough
@mememe37Ай бұрын
Nothing brings me more joy than you complaining about the manufacturers saving on the hinges.
@keerthan7558Ай бұрын
Funnily enough the Aspire 5 model feels better even though most of the hardware g software problems continue to exist 😅. It feels miles better than Hp or IdeaPad at same price of 500-600 dollars
@WyvernDotRedАй бұрын
Dang, TN panel aside, that seems like a surprisingly passable laptop for the price. Actually something I'd consider in an absolute emergency situation or for a child, if second-hand is not an option. Though I'd definitely rather aim for an IPS or VA display, more RAM and a better keyboard, the latter since I'm rather picky with those.
@RedBeardedRabbitАй бұрын
So, for another few $ on the BoM (Bill of Materials) and maybe ~$50 extra to the final customer's price, we could have had an acceptable display and 16GB of RAM for an overall decent basic laptop? I'll be damned if Windows laptop makers don't seem to always TRY THEIR HARDEST to compromise their machines JUST ENOUGH to make you not want to buy them. Otherwise we would have had an actually acceptable basic machine, and obviously WE CAN'T HAVE THAT CAN WE?

(Didn't watch the video yet) I had an acer aspire 5 (A515-51G-58VH) , after replacing the HDD (that only lasted 3 years) aparently I made enough force to damage the LCD, it's extremely fragile, my sister had the exact same model and did the same damage by just putting it in a laptop sleeve and taking it to university. After replacing both LCDs, the keyboard starting failing in the asdf row, in both laptops, never bought anything from acer after that.
