I love all the information in this video. I didn’t realize a Bloodgood had to be grafted from the cultivar to be an actual “Bloodgood”. I will be sure to watch your cultivar video! I also like the explanation of ft in years and loved seeing such a large maple! Thank you for sharing!

We got two Japanese Red Maples 3 ft tall 20 to 25 years ago. One's almost taller than the house and the other one is a wide and shorter. One of these days I'm going to start getting good clippings and grow as many more as I can and pot yearlings growing around the trees from fallen seeds. I also want to make some Japanese Maple bonsai's.

I think it is at least 6 years for palmatums if they are allowed to grow wild and free, though it depends on the vigor of the rootstock

They are all very low. Japanese maple leaves dry up to not much. We don’t even have to clean out greenhouses with thousands of them

The specimen in this video doesn't have as deep cut lobes as I've seen with Bloodgoods. Does this variability occur with tree age?

It is incorrect that these must be grafted to be a true 'Bloodgood'
@MrMapleShow
@MrMapleShow 4 ай бұрын
A rooted cutting is possible but makes a poor long term tree in the landscape. No seedlings have cultivar names because of genetic diversity of maples leads to variability. It’s is unethical and wrong to call seedlings ‘Bloodgood’
@Grrrnthumb
@Grrrnthumb 4 ай бұрын
@@MrMapleShow Seedlings are irrelevant to naming cuttings. And no, ungrafted 'Bloodgood' are not poor plants. That is certainly what nurserymen who sell grafted plants would like you to think. Grafting is often more about time to sale for wholesale growers. Grafting speeds up the process and increases profit. So grafted plants can be a year or more ahead of cuttings in time, so appear "better" when they're just older. Also grafting greatly improves strike rate and total survival to market because cuttings take a lot of care, so improves profit, but cutting grown 'Bloodgood's are excellent plants
@MrMapleShow
@MrMapleShow 4 ай бұрын
@@Grrrnthumb grafted trees out preform rooted cuttings and have longer life spans. Thants why experts in Holland to Japan have been grafting for hundreds of years. To say anything else is to ignorant of the facts. Rooted cuttings are cheep knock offs. Grafts require skill and yield they are not a fast track they provide an improvement on roots. Nurseries who do exclusively cuttings lose haft the crop after 7 years in the ground. Trust me I’ve rooted thousands and grafted thousands. There is a huge difference in quality.
@Grrrnthumb
@Grrrnthumb 4 ай бұрын
@@MrMapleShow No, ornamental grafted trees still have the same natural life span. You're thinking of fruit trees that have always been overbred for a very specific fruit quality, just like many roses are overbred for flower appearance. Grafting can re-impart some of the natural vigor these weak, overbred plants have lost, and in that way seems to extend life span, but it is just bringing it back to baseline, not imparting extra life. This is not needed in ornamental tree which are usually bred with vigor as a main desired trait, unlike fruit trees & some flowering trees. Yes I agree about heavy cutting losses as I said. It's hard, so not as profitable. But a cutting grown 'Bloodgood' is 100% identical to the amazing, healthy, vigorous, beautiful, long-lived tree that was originally selected as the best out of thousands at Bloodgood Nurseries, it just takes longer than grafted. That huge difference in quality is age difference
@MrMapleShow
@MrMapleShow 4 ай бұрын
@Grrrnthumb respectfully this is incorrect. Rooted Japanese maple cuttings tend to have very irregular growth. They form poor branching and are more susceptible to root born issues. This is widely agreed upon by horticulture academics as well as the nursery production community in large because of experience over time. The issue isn’t with the ability to root. It is the 7 years down the line when the customer has an inferior plant that half the crop is still dropping off from. Many Japanese maples do not root well as you know and cannot thrive at all as rooted cuttings. It can work for sure but it’s not preferred and is inferior in many ways. That is why the Japanese have been grafting named selections since the 1700s instead of cuttings.
