ACER PALMATUM 'EMPEROR 1'
RED EMPEROR JAPANESE MAPLE
ZONES 5-9
‘EMPEROR 1’ IS ONE OF OUR FAVORITE RED UPRIGHT JAPANESE MAPLES. ALSO KNOWN AS 'RED EMPEROR', THE EARLY SPRING COLOR OF THIS JAPANESE MAPLE COMES OUT AS AN EXTREMELY DEEP MAROON WITH A BRILLIANT TRANSLUCENT SHEEN THAT GIVES THE LEAVES A NICE SHINNY LOOK AS THE SUNLIGHT HITS THEM. THIS 'EMPEROR 1' JAPANESE MAPLE HOLDS ITS RICH, DARK RED FOLIAGE WELL THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER MONTHS, AND HAS A BRILLIANT SCARLET FALL DISPLAY. THE UNDERSIDE OF THE LEAF IS A RICH OLIVE GREEN.
THE 'EMPEROR ONE' JAPANESE MAPLE MAKES A BEAUTIFUL DYNAMIC TO THE SHINY RED TOPS AS THE LEAVES TURN BLOWING IN A LIGHT SUMMER BREEZE. ‘EMPEROR 1’ IS A VIGOROUS GROWING RED JAPANESE MAPLE THOUGH IT STAYS MIDSIZED OVERALL AT AROUND 15 FEET IN HEIGHT. HARDINESS IS ANOTHER GREAT QUALITY OF ‘EMPEROR 1’. THIS RED EMPEROR JAPANESE MAPLE TREE HANDLES COLD CONDITIONS EXTREMELY WELL AND IS ALSO VERY HEAT TOLERANT IN THE LATE SUMMER. WITH ALL OF ITS WONDERFUL ATTRIBUTES ‘EMPEROR 1’ MAKES A PERFECT CHOICE FOR A MID-SIZED UPRIGHT RED JAPANESE MAPLE.

I have three mature, over 10 year old Emperor 1 Acers. All in large terracotta pots. Each Acer are located in different parts of my garden all having different exposures to the full Sun. One by my Pond enjoys almost a full day of Sunshine and it’s a beautiful Plum Purple, almost velvet looking leaves. One E1 is in a shaded location under the canopy of neighbouring trees, is a deep Claret Red and in the late Summer sunshine in the Autumn just illuminates the Autumn Fall colours. The third E1 is at the front of my property and is a nice deep red leaf. They are divine! But the late sunshine penetrates the leaves is akin to looking at red stained Cathedral glass as seen in Churches!

I have a crimson queen, emperor one, coral bark and bloodgood Japanese Maple. They are all in a same location morning Sun and late afternoon, the emperor one it's the only one that is not showing any kind of stress from Sacramento heat. But I love all of them.

Amazing colours even during the Summer Months (here in the UK). The afternoon sunlight makes the leaves glow a Ruby red, and once you see how bright these leaves glow then you can’t help raising a smile knowing that you’ve made the right decision in purchasing such a Maple. It’s a Maple that I’d certainly recommend!

I have an Emperor I that I planted about 23 or so years ago. In the fall, the afternoon sun is behind it as you head up my driveway and it looks spectacular! It is a vibrant, glowing red that draws the eye from a distance and looks like it is lit from within. The only tree that rivals it is an Osakzuki that would stop traffic in the fall. That was at a different home. I think I bought this online from Dick Wolf’s nursery. I got lucky. I didn’t know what a treasure I was getting! Word to the wise, don’t plant it under a power line; it will get there before you know it and you will have to defend your tree from the power company when they trim periodically. It isn’t really a threat to the power lines as the branches that reach that high are small and light weight, but the people that subcontract for the power companies are not concerned with such things, only with shearing off anything that comes near the lines. If you happen to be gone when they come through, you might come back to a flat-topped tree that looks like the branches have been chewed off rather than cut cleanly. 😢 Mine has recovered its shape mostly, but it would be better to put slow-growing dwarf maples in such locations, or weeping, spreading cultivars. I didn’t know how big my Emperor I was going to get when I put it there and I want others to benefit from my Japanese maple gardening mistakes! I could plan a great Japanese maple garden now, but I might not be around to see it mature! 😂🤣😂

Thanks for this information. In the Triangle, NC, area, in an area of full sun with high heat and humidity, this might be a tree that would finally survive in our yard. It would be thrilling to have a Japanese maple like this.

I keep hearing zones 5-8. I'm zone 9b and a local nursery is selling this and the Dissectum variety. I want to plant this in my screen near my pool area. But I face South West so it would get sun most of the day. The screen cuts the rays a heck of a lot. Going outside it is such a drastic difference. I have serious doubts this can handle the Orlando summers.

I'm in zone 8 in coastal SC. I planted one in early May this year and it's done great. The Japanese beetles got on it, but we took care them pretty quick. Then over the last couple weeks we've had daily heat advisories. This tree gets about 6 hours of sun from 2pm to sunset. it gets water daily. Over the last few days, the leaves are turning brown and shriveling up. I think they got scorched. The branches are pliable and seem okay. Any thoughts? I thinking I just leave it alone, let the leaves drop this winter and pray for new growth in the spring.
@MrMapleShow

Definitely dealing with stress. It should be ok and push new growth as long as the buds are healthy. I would let it defoliate on its own because they will help protect the new buds.

I'm in southwest Missouri and need something for my front yard that is West facing...it will be in 100% afternoon sun....as you know we can have extremes over 100 degrees and easily a good month or more in the 90s. Do you think these would be OK? There is no shade because we lost our big trees in a tornado this past May.

Love the series of heat tolerant JMs. Even after watching them and google searching, I am trying to find out if its worth getting an Emperor 1 here in the Jacksonville, FL area. Zone 9A and about 40 minutes inland (no salt) I have seen some people saying yes and some no. The main thing to worry about is that it will be full sun western facing, 20 feet from the house and 5 feet from the neighbors fence. I have a horrible Bradford Pear there now (previous owner put that train wreck in) and I want to get rid of it and put a decent shade tree that wont get too tall 20ft max. I was thinking Crepe Myrtle but those will also get messy on the driveway. Any suggestions?
