Just planted one in my garden and am looking forward to seeing it develop. Picked out one with a very slight graceful curve in the trunk so it should be very pretty as it grows.

Same here! Exact about the curve. Any tips ?

Wow! I can't believe your Japanese Maple leaves don't scorch in 90 degree weather. I just bought and planted my Japanese Maple about 3 months ago and have had some pretty hot weather lately here in southern CA; ranging from the high 80s to the mid-90s and it's scorched almost all my maple leaves, even with consistent watering. I had to put a sun shade over it to help protect the remaining leaves that haven't been scorched. I'm hoping it's just because it's newly planted and still young (bought it at Costco in a 5-gallon container. It's about 6-7 feet high right now). I've heard that they can better tolerate the hotter weather once they've become more established and have grown a bit taller. Keeping my fingers crossed! Thanks for the great video. Your tree is gorgeous!

Yes, having a bigger root system to draw up that extra water you think it's getting makes a difference in a lot of plants. The single biggest thing I see creating problems for plants is under watering. It only takes one hot day when they are low on 'available' water for them to get scorched and unless you soak all of the soil around the root it is hard to keep the roots moist. I wouldn't have this plant in your climate unless it is on automatic irrigation and sprayed over the root zone. I just think for it's natural root system and what it wants you have to be able to keep the root zone cooled down and moist when it's hot. You should have good mulch over the roots to avoid drying out between watering or a groundcover that does the same thing. They aren't used to your low humidity so you have to compensate for faster water loss through transporation from the leaf surfaces by giving them more water. It's a lot to do but they want what they want. Good luck!

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly, Jeff. Yes, I've got a nice layer of mulch over the roots and all around it. I've planted it in a raised flower bed with really good soil. I am watering it more often, too. As far as I can see, the soil stays pretty moist. I don't want to over water it either though. Do you think that once it gets established in this area that the leaves will be more tolerant of the sun? I'm keeping a sun shade over it until is does get more established. Also, how many feet a year do they normally grow?

Sandy Carabio What’s the current status of your JM? I’m considering planting one I have in a pot on the south east side of my backyard. My home faces North. Crossing my fingers that it thrives considering our weather is cooling of quite a bit.

Just bought one 2 inch caliper 11 ft tall in a 25 gallon container. Should do well here in the N.C. mountains.

I live in Canada, how do you take care of it for the winter, do you have to cover it with burlap?

I planted one myself, they are fast growers. Emperor I, They are vigorous grower unlike other japanese maples types.

Hi Joseph. Could you give me an idea of just how quickly they grow? Mine was planted from a 5-gallon container and is about 6-7 feet tall. About how many feet do they normally grow each year?

+Sandy Carabio after 2 years it grew a few feet. I planted it in southern Missouri where it rains regularly. Having it in a arid climate will be difficult so I would water at night and make sure you have a large mound of mulch around the tree too keep the ground around it from drying out as quickly.

Thank you so much. Yes, I do have mulch all around the tree and keep the soil moist. Can wait until it gets bigger. :)

Exactly. He planted it as a 15 gallon pot, which itself would already be quite big to start with.
