The Kmart had a small food court with orange and red tables, brown counters. The walls were orange.

@Ashley Sayers Yep, I agree. She is an 80's beauty. I can see why NETFLIX nailed it down as one of the prime film location spots for STRANGER THINGS S3. The Gwinnett Place Mall is totally on point. I love the old school 70's/80's/90's retro architectural designs of our malls in the US. Well, sadly what's left of them in our country that is. Here is New Jersey we have a lot of malls & luckily all doing pretty well. One of our largest malls (& coolest ) in Central Jersey still has it's 1987 mall renovation intact. It's called the Woodbridge Center Mall. It doesn't have all the lux anchor stores, but the mall is neat & clean & always packed with shoppers. Great daily Mall Walkers program too for those who enjoy a one-stop shopping kinda experince lol ;D

I live in Georgia and in the same county as this mall. Time has not been kind to it. The county's demographics have indeed changed and the area is perceived as a high crime rate area. Mall of Georgia and Discover Mills doomed it once they opened since they were much nicer malls. I remember when the site for Gwinnett Place was just trees. Two of the county's movie theatres were there. One was torn down a long time ago and the other abandoned. Not sure if it has been torn down yet but it's in front of Fry's Electronics. There was even a NASCAR store in this mall along with an awesome arcade, Wizard's of the Coast store, and Ruby Tuesday's which, of course, are all gone.Nice work on the video!

Ah yes I remember when there was 36 movie screens under 3 separate movie housings. The memories of going to midnight movies at one next frys and there was always a line to get into rocky horror I never saw that there but should have. Definitely mall of ga caused Gwinnett place to go into death spiral. I remember about 1/3 of Duluth high school skipped the day Gwinnett place opened. Alyfe Poison Bunny Shadow This mall was built in the 80's and they never remodeled it so it is true to the 80's look. It's called Gwinnett Place Mall. Around May or June they blocked off one wing with the food court and some stores so they could make the set for Stranger Things. In the middle of the food curt is a pretty fountain with a fish on each side. It was jade green and they painted it gold. I want to get footage like him but it's blocked off. Idk how he got through becaus they prohibit cameras. But then again the security sucks.

Actually, they did do a major remodel in the mid 90s, ripping up the old brown tile, replacing it with lighter colors. There were smaller renovations after that, eventually laying carpet in the walkways, as well as adding an entire wing with the store Parisian in 1993 or so. The hanging sign is original, and the neon rings on the columns in the food court are, too. There were two additional large Roman style columns in the food court that were torn down in the 90s as well. I grew up in this mall, it didn't look exactly like this in the 80s, it had a darker aesthetic. But it's cool, they still did an awesome job with the set design.

If you are ever visiting Victoria, BC Canada, there is a Mall called "University Heights Shopping Centre" and it too was built in the 80's and has never been remodeled. When you walk in, it's as if TIME STOOD STILL. Same 80's color scheme and original paint of Teal and White, the floors are that classic 80's mall tile, even the bathrooms have original fixtures and dispensers that are not even made anymore. And to add to the strangeness, it's very quite inside with hardly ever anyone in it or around. I really don't know how some of the stores stay open there. So many of the spaces have been sitting vacant for years.

Woh I thought it was a warehouse conversion/studio lot, didn’t realise it was a real 80s mall which hasn’t been demolished yet. It should be preserved for historical reasons. Agree changing it to 80s theme would attract lots of nostalgia fans. Omg it’s sooooo 80s.

Gwinnett Place Mall used to be my favorite mall before the Mall of Georgia opened when I was 14sih. I'm 32, this is crazy! I'm so excited!
@nick371042 жыл бұрын
The attention to detail is truly staggering, especially when you consider more than half of these locations are literal set dressing. They're only there to fill the space as if it were an actual mall, yet even in the stores that we barely see, they're given just as much TLC as "Scoops Ahoy," where the bulk of scenes take place.

I live in Duluth and work right across the street from Gwinnett Place Mall. I've been going to this mall since moving to GA in the 90's. This was the mall I went to all through high school. I remember when every single store in the mall was packed and like you said after Mall of GA opened and Sugarloaf Mills, poor Gwinnett Place went down hill. Since this video was shot the Sears officially closed and so did the Payless and a few other stores. There may be a total of 10 stores open still and that's being generous. Very sad!

The mall was remodeled around 2000 when they took out the most amazing winding staircases, one of which had a waterfall, with water spilling around the stairs as if from a mountain, the single most amazing mall fountain I've ever seen. They basically spent mega-millions to bore up the mall as you tour it today. Had you seen it in mid to early 90s you would have doubtlessly been far more impressed. The youth of that generation had a more fantastic place to hang out and loiter. In the 90s and 2000s malls around the nation collectively spent many billions to bore up their malls, make them less appealing to youths as park like destinations. During the late 70s and 80s malls had been designed specifically to be futuristic park like environments, to encourage socialization and gathering spots for the community to enjoy both leisure shopping and passing their long weekends and holidays in these sanctuary gathering spots for being together. In the 90s nanny activists starting becoming vocal that they people should not be loitering at malls, that they should be in-out destinations to do shopping rather than social destinations. They raised red flags and sounded loud alarms at teens gathering together. They raised the specter of child abuse at malls. They called out child neglect at parents who dropped off their kids at malls for hours or even most of the day while they took care of business elsewhere. This was the era when governments started focusing on requiring parents having constant eye to eye contact with their kids and even their teens while in public spots. So, in came tens of $billions of dollars in financing to refurbish malls all around the nation to appear more box like, with boring hallways between anchor stores, majestic fountains removed, flash and flare dismantled. News and Movies then focused on the culture of total social deprivation and raising kids from babies to adulthood while skipping being a kid or teen altogether. I Had moved from Jackson MS when they had just bored up Metrocenter Mall, removing a third floor hangout spot for teens, removing cool sub-floor cacoon like hangout spots for loiters and teens, forcing Spencers to remove their black lights and brighten it up, and basic spending an entire year remodeling Metrocenter, which was billed to the community as a major community investment and huge improvement over the former look which was called out for being really bizarre or weird etc. When they unveiled the curtains surrounding the two huge central courtyards and central part of the main corridors I remember being in total shock at how boring it looked, like being in a giant box-store which school hallways or hospital hallways connecting it all together, and yet afraid to express my dislike because of all the media hype covering the "upgrade" which would have been sort of like complaining about a mega-hit movie just out, or a mega-hit record released by a huge star.. but I due remember saying I liked the old mall better but usually hearing something out that the new mall was safer for children, or something like that, and that was when I myself was older teen. Then after the remodel the news was constantly on about all the teens still hanging out at the mall, and how unsafe that was, and that all minors should always be accompanied by their parents within any mall, and that malls were for in-out shopping, not loitering, and the youth were constantly getting tagged by mall partrol if they weren't with parents in the mall. So gradually the culture was changed and the 80s erased, almost. .. I moved to Gwinnett County, to Dultuh in the late 90s just before they tackled Gwinnett Place Mall, but got to enjoy it as it was a couple of years. Sad what they did to it. But, that's what the cultural authorities wanted, and yes the youth have suffered total social deprivation since the 80s. The nannies say its for childrens safety, but that can't be true, look what they did to school lunches at schools all across the nation: we had hot meals for lunch, or choice of a salad bar. Hot meals were fresh cooked vegatables like green beans or something else, a meat like real fried chicken or meat loaf or steak fingers or salsbury steak, hamburgers, pizza, turkey & dressing during holidays, friend fish, chicken fried steaks, grilled cheese sandwiches made out of real cheddar cheese, chicken & dumplings. And the breads were rolls or cornbread. Today they feed kids toxic garbage made in an industrial plant. We had real cooks in the cafeteria, they have nobody. Yet the modern government nannies still say they do what they do because they want to protect children. The statistics say that kids and young adults are getting cancer, with rates doubling compared to the generation that became adults in the 70s and 80s. And youth suicide is epidemic higher than ever recorded. The stats are against them. They cause total social deprivation and feed children toxic garbage, and they are dying from cancer and suicide now more than ever before. Those are real statistic, look them up. FACTS, they are speaking, and those that censor them are causing youth death and mental dysfunction, and harming America by creating a generation that lost all their childhood and teen years, with many needlessly becoming wards of the state or having lower satisfaction with life

Seeing those vintage storefronts was just awesome. Of all the stores that we have lost, I miss Radio Shack the most, so seeing a stocked Radio Shack was freaking awesome (and slightly emotional.) When I saw the food court, I'm like, "I need to visit this mall and get an Orange Julius!" I was a little disappointed that some of the look is for the show (which I have been told I need to watch.) Props to you Ace for getting this footage. BTW, KZbin randomly unsubbed me from your channel w/o me realizing it, I have resubbed though, so I'm binge watching what I've missed.

Mall of GA and Discover/Sugarloaf mills just up I-85, a drastically changed demographic and increased crime in area were the nails in the coffin for this mall. Used to be one of the biggest malls in region in its heyday, very sad but its the reality of now

I'm so excited for Season 3 of Stranger Things. With the current Mall, it appears some parts are deader than others. Still a few national retailers but I'm sure their time is limited and after that those stores won't be back-filled. Also with JC Penney and Macy's as anchors, they could both close at any time too. It kind of reminds me of Marley Station Mall in Glen Burnie, MD where I'm from.

The JC Penney is part of the movie set portion of the mall, but there was indeed a real JC Penney in that exact spot up until about 3 years ago. The two Chinese restaurants in the food court were also originally part of the mall, they kept the exact same signs, possibly the cookie place as well.
