Berry Gordy founded Motown which became a money printing machine when Smokey Robinson joined. They combed through Detroit's jazz scene to hire all the backing musicians because they could read music theory. They cultivated and dominated a musical era with class and professionalism. The song My Girl by The Temptations knocked The Beatles off the number one spot in the Billboard Top 10, prompting a letter of congratulations from The Beatles to The Temptations, adding that they were all huge fans of Motown's artists. Smokey was one of Motown's most prolific songwriters, and often wrote music for other artists on the label to boost their popularity. And it all still holds up today. Nice suits, smooth dance choreography, uncompromising professionalism and a willingness to spend a lot of time and money cultivating artists like Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder. Motown is as legendary as it is iconic. Great reaction!

Smokey & the Miracles were one of the first acts of Motown Records… actually Motown was built on their success!!

This is a classic, but I tend to see it as the early version of "Tears of a Clown," by Smokey Robinson. Smokey's album "A Quiet Storm" spawned a classification of R&B called Quiet Storm. If you're curious about the genre, there's a song called "Quiet Storm" by Smokey. It's basically smooth jazz.

A singular vocal riff at about 3:28 into this! That series of descending notes ending with "smile". Nothing like it. Thanks!

Smokey was a huge part of Motown. Tears of a Clown is my favorite but Cruisin is nice too. He wrote and produced so much music. Also, Linda Ronstadt covered Tracks of My Tears later, and it was so good,

Classic! Ultra-classic! "The Tracks Of My Tears" was a top-ten hit for Smokey Robinson & The Miracles in 1965. "Outside, I'm masquerading \ Inside, my hope is fading \ Just a clown, ooh yeah \ Since you put me down \ My smile is my makeup\ I wear since my break-up with you" -- What a bridge! When you're ready for more from Smokey Robinson & The Miracles also check out "The Tears Of A Clown", "I Second That Emotion", "More Love", "Ooo Baby Baby", and "You've Really Got A Hold On Me".

I should mention that Quincy Jones just passed away - he and Smokey Robinson were - are - icons of Motown and R & B.

Linda Ronstadt has a great cover. "When Smokey Sings" is a perfect Tribute to Smokey.
