You can tell by the opening guitar solo that Ian Anderson is a fine guitar player. But, story is that he saw Eric Clapton and knew he would never be that good. So, he bought a flute and taught himself to play. This is from 1970, less than three years after he first picked up the flute. Ian Anderson is a musical genius and, IMO, the best frontman in Rock. If you haven't yet, treat yourself to a live performance of "Thick As A Brick".

I mentioned similar on the last one I watched. I believe he also threw Jimmy Page under that "too good" bus with Slow Hand.

Ian Anderson is the legendary front man of Jethro Tull (band's name). There has never been a band like this in the history of rock music. Performing still, with a new album just last month, 55 years, since their debut in 1968! Only Led Zeppelin and The Grateful Dead matched their intense live shows in the 1970's.

Led Zeppelin, however, could not match Tull's precision live. Zeppelin was a sloppy live band compared to Tull

He does those "little vocalizatons" on his studio versions too. They ARE Tull.

Ian Anderson was only about 2 years in on teaching himself the flute at this point in his career. He had improved since then. Check out "Thick as a Brick" live - either the 1977 or 1978 version -- or both 😁. Also check out Ian Anderson flute solo 1976. Ian Anderson became arguably THE BEST Concert Frontman in all of Rock with his antics, humor, theatrics, and athleticism.

Yes, Ian Anderson is just amazing on flute, and get this, at the time of this performance, he had only been playing flute a few years, was entirely self-taught, yet when I watched a reaction video done by a flautist, she kept stopping the playback, just flabbergasted at how difficult technically what he was doing was! Apparently, to vocalize while playing and in-between playing as he does, the flutter tonguing technique, the "beatbox" where he just taps the flute and it makes a percussive sound, not to mention just the speed of his playing at points, and playing beautifully cleanly at points when he wants to - all very difficult and advanced stuff according to her. Things this flautist, with quite a bit of training, admitted she couldn't do, at least not at all well! And yes, what a showman with a fun sense of humor! Obviously doesn't take himself too seriously, despite his obvious talent. And none of this mentions his superb composition skills. Many albums worth! The rest of the band is great too, for example the superb Martin Barre on guitar. I suggest you checkout "Songs from the wood" live, or "Locomotive breath" live, or "Thick as a brick" live, or the entire "Nothing is easy" album, or "Benefit" album, or "Aqua lung" albums. Truly a musical treasure.

Never was and never will be another Ian anderson. About a year after this show Tull became a legendary rock super group, selling out all the big arenas.

One of my favorite Tull songs among MANY (Stand Up album has some heat on it) and this is one of his heaviest rockers IMO - it's tracks like this that make me wonder what it would have sounded like with Toni Iommi on guitar (he was invited to join the band at one point) but I'm glad he stayed with the legends Black Sabbath and this guitarist did perfect I wouldn't change a thing!

Absolutely check out the entire catalog of the band from 1968 This Was(blues and jazz oriented) through 1987 and you will discover how they progressed in their music to include many styles of music which distinguished them from the other prog bands of that time, because no two albums are alike. Welcome to Tull and please listen to all their music because it is all excellent! Listen to the studio version first then look at the video performances after. When I went to see the live performance it was like if you were blind you would hear the song as if you were listening to the studio recording- that’s how accurate they were. Nothing like a live Tull concert. Btw the My God song you viewed was included on the Aqualung album that was released a year later with the lyrics slightly changed and the flute solo was shorter but totally fit with the music. So check it out as well as the whole catalog of this band. There is no other band like them and they are worth listening to for so many reasons. I will be checking on your channel to see your reaction to all of the Tull you review Cheers!

If you love this, you'll love the whole Aqualung album. But JT have produced many varied albums over their 50+ Yr career (latest album came this year!). Thick as a Brick, Songs from the Wood, Heavy Horses are all excellent albums.

This isn't close to the best flute solo by him. The front man, Ian Anderson, has abounding energy and has the mystical ability to keep an entire stadium of young people with short attention spans mesmerized with his flute. Seeing their show live was a real special experience. You are right about the comedic quality of his performance, Ian is a big fan of Monte Python and it shows in his performances, especially back then.

If you haven't heard Ian Anderson play the flute, you've never heard a flute before. He is completely self taught with no lessons. Professional flute players are amazed by him. They all say he holds the flute wrong and his fingering are wrong, but he is one of the best ever.

Ian Anderson and Harrison Stafford (Groundation) are the two most underrated white musicians in history. Both have vast catalogs of great music, but because of their often controversial subject matter, never got the good press they deserve.

Ian anderson got tired of carrying around a guitar to auditions, so he learned the flute. If you watch reactions of flautists on videos on youtube to his performance, they give him credit for doctoral level skills and he is self taught AND creative in ways they do not teach. He makes the flute into something rockin and when he mixes jazz and classical with his flute and personal flair,i it is transformed

Different lyrics from the album version. I prefer these. This is with Glenn on bass but on the album version it is Jeffery. This is raw, hard and precise!
