Great job! You got it. I don't know very much about "the bloody church of England", but I see two quite young artist spitting out discomfort with the experience of the same religion of their youth. But with very different musical tools. Both John Lydon and Ian Anderson are still active. Different time, different expressions. It should be noted that at least Ian Andersson evolved a lot during the following years to masterpieces as "Songs from the wood" (about when Lydon joined Sex Pistols). This was before Aqualung and he had played the flute for only a year or so. Thanks!

Ian learnt to play the flute for their first album in 1968, titled This Was...... as a reference to the change from blues ( this album being a blues album ) to moving on to Ian’s bluesy, folksy, jazzy rock and Euro / Eastern folk / rock. Ian was a master guitarist ( mostly 12 string ) and already played mouth organ, recorder, tin whistle. Irish whistles etc so he gave himself only about a week to learn the flute. lol The Aqualung album and My God were recorded about April 1970 so he learnt the flute about 2 years before they recorded My God, but at least 8 years before this live performance.

Very clever. Good job Erik. A joy to watch. Also, funnyt that you mentioned Pink Floyd. John Lydon, when he was Johnny Rotten, wore a shirt that read I Hate Pink Floyd. Just a tidbit. Stay scared Mike.

1) As you could see from the title of PIL's album, this was done after John Lydon left The Sex Pistols so his sound wasn't quite established yet, and 2) Jethro Tull's flute playing interested me at first but this live performance with 2 flute solos seemed a bit indulgent to me. "Aqualung" is the only song of theirs that I like. The only other rock band that used flute in some of their songs was Canned Heat who I preferred more.

I can def. See the indulgent nature of it.

@MikeMacabre If 2 flute solos are indulgent, then then what are dozens of guitar solos? The flute is the main instrument. With Tull. There were many bands that used the flute, such as The Moody Blues. and the Marshal Tucker Band. I've seen literally 100's of bands and my opinion is that Jethro Tull is the best band I ever saw live.

Not saying it's a bad thing. But there is a fine line.

Aqualung doesn't include a flute.

@@MikeMacabre Perhaps. But this was a live performance, and they couldn't duplicate the chorus used on the studio version. You need to hear that.

As an atheist, I approve. Also try "Hymn 43" studio version off the same Tull album.
