"Crystal Blue Persuasion" is probably my favorite from them, but "Draggin' the Line" is probably the one that people seem to remember most. This was a very creative band, especially for the time. The late 60s and early 70 were such an explosion of creativity in music. They also did the original "Mony Mony," which was famously covered by Billy Idol later on. "Crimson and Clover" was famously covered by Joan Jett.

Tommy James was always very creative and experimental, with the Shondells and solo. This will always be a favorite, and takes me right back to the time,

The vocal effect was developed in the studio with the microphone plugged into a guitar amp with the tremolo on and set to match closely with the tempo & rhythm of the song

This song could well encapsulize the "grooviness" of the 1960s.

Yes, the last part of the song with the sound like they were singing underwater was very impressive at the time it came out. This song was a standout for being so interesting, it continually teases that it is going to take off then it pulls back again and again. It was a groovy song then and it still is today.

I would call it psychedelic. It was unique in that vocal effect toward the end, which I am not technical enough to name. I always think of this as a pair with Crystal Blue Persuasion. I was just an eight year old kid.

The effect on the vocal is tremolo. Older technology and built into many guitar amps since the early 60s. This, to my knowledge, was the first time it was used on vocals.

The instrument you're referring to is called a "Guirro" or more commonly known as a "Fish" because it is a long hollow wooden tube hollowed with ridges on the outside that are stroked with something that looks like a hair picker with metal teeth.

Psychedelic bubblegum! The backing vocals evoke the girl group pop songs from earlier in the decade. 1968. They were experimenting with old and new studio effects, reverb primarily, but that wah-wah pedal guitar sound was brand new. Joan Jett released a rocked up version of the song in the early eighties. "Crystal Blue Persuasion" is a new vibration, so check it out. And for other contemporaries in that style check out Donovan "Sunshine Superman", "Hurdy Gurdy Man", and "Wear Your Love Like Heaven", and Strawberry Alarm Clock "Incense And Peppermints" and "Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow" (If you haven't already). Beyond The Mamas and The Papas, so to speak. Also Fairport Convention "Farewell, Farewell", "Reno Nevada", and "Who Knows Where The Time Goes". This.
