I accidentally touched that red hot copper to acetone. Thanks for lighting my house

What is the resulting gas fram the catylization? Is it harmful toxic or just annoying toxic?

Would this reaction work with acetone vapor circulated through the inside of a heated copper coil?
@DOUCH3AG7 жыл бұрын
You would need something like a carborator to incluse the required oxygen.

Oh was thinking about chemical reaction heating for use in hot air engines. I found an alternative for heating cylinders on Sterling hot air engines but thanks for responding.
@DOUCH3AG7 жыл бұрын
No, problems! This method is still viable though! You could use the air from the exhaust of the stirling engine to bubble though acetone and force it through the copper pipe( very thin coppe tubing). Should work in theory.
@jimmartin78997 жыл бұрын
Better to use low voltage induction of crystal graphite rods to heat cylinders. Used with a transmission I bet the hot air engine would get great gas mileage. Less pollution. You know you could in theory use short blast communication waves induction to heat huge graphite rods red hot? They would act just like nuke power plants that produce electricity just without all the radioactive waste. Novartis

A V-10 Sterling engine operated off low voltage induction of crystal graphite rods in each cylinder to power the hot air engine. With the crankshaft matted up with a swash plate hydraulic pump motor to operate the wheels of a vehicle should get great gas mileage. LOL ; )

I wonder if this would also work with ethanol.

Your chemical equation is not right... I have multiple sources of the reaction which are not matching yours.. According to my sources it's: 2 Cu + O2 ----> 2 CuO 2 CuO + 2 (CH3)2C=O ---> 2 H2C=C=O + 2 CH4 + 2 Cu + O2 So no acetaldehyde or acetic acid is formed during the reaction.. The only products formed are ketene and methane

Ketene! Beware!!!

i know this is a 3 y/o comment, but, i'm preety sure this is a catalitic oxidation, not a pyrolisis, besides, ketene forms without presesnce of oxigen, of wich there was plenty there.

try a glow tungsten powder filament flash tube, not with low vacuum plasma, but with tungsten metal, thin wire transparent refractory tube

Maybe you could get a large glass jar with a wide lid. Use a drill to make a hole in the center of the lid. Use a bolt down part way about a third. On the end of the bold is a small wooded wheel that has a hole in the center that goes on the bolt. One to two holes are put in the wood wheel by the center hole two holes also go in the lid by the center hole. The on the outer rim goes two holes. A small copper mesh screen is fastened onto the wood wheel going to the top of the lids bottom. Then pips fit the holes on the outer edge of the top lid going to the bottom of the wood wheel to act as air holes for a draft. The copper mesh is heat treated to make a black oxide layer but not heated to white hot or it may melt. A small piece of carbon felt about one fourth to one third of jar is in the bottom. Acetone is put in the bottom about a fourth of a cup. The lid assembly is pre heated a bit if need. The lid is put on the jar. I hope you make sure the screen is seal at the top of the jar and bondo is used to seal the pipes to make a containment for the acetone gas. As the copper screen gets hot it draws air from the top into the screen chamber. The carbon felt generates acetone vapors. A small spring of sheet steel may be used to hold the carbon felt against the wall of the jar if needed. The acetone vapors are on the outside of the screen catalyst while air moves up the inside of the catalyst by convection flow. Or so I hope. Anyway this was just a thought.

Can this be used to make acetaldehyde somewhat efficiently ??
@tobinator6807 жыл бұрын
No, because no Acetaldehyde is made in that reaction, to make acetaldehyde you need to use ethanol

bur isn't it dangerous ? because of the flammability of acetone ?
@sbreheny9 жыл бұрын
+Omar Rashed I thought about this, too, but the vapor pressure of acetone at room temp is about 30kPa, making the volume percent acetone in air inside the flask or beaker around 30%. The upper flammable limit of acetone is about 13% by volume in air, so as long as there is still liquid acetone at the bottom of the container then the mixture of acetone and air above it should be too rich to ignite, so the oxidation reaction happens only at the surface of the copper, which controls the rate, keeping it slow.

+ThalmorKhajiit Sorry, everybody, but he's actually Estonian!! In his water ball video, he shows off the package he got from China. He Sharpied-out his home address, but he didn't scratch-out the Estonian import part on the package!! So, no more speculation!! :) _Yes, I know it was a while ago, and you've forgotten you even commented here, just a public service announcement!! Cheers!_

I certainly don't know eastern European accents, so I'll give you that. Just going by what people have said claiming he sounds Estonian, and his address is in Estonia! So, you may be right! I can't argue with you! Cheers!
