70% nitric acid actually works better than 93%. The extra water helps remove the hydrogen atoms from the glycerine so the nitrate groups can attach. Its also cheaper.
@lucianoperitore66473 жыл бұрын
I've a question, the NO2+ groups are formed thanks to the disidratation action of the sulfuric acid or thanks to the acidity of the sulfuric acid?
@DangerClose13E3 жыл бұрын
@@lucianoperitore6647 I never heard of "disidratation". You should study the nitration processes better before attempting these procedures.
@lucianoperitore66473 жыл бұрын
@@DangerClose13E you misunderstood, the sense of my question. Follow my reasoning: if you have the nitration mechanism in mind, you should know that sulfuric acid transforms nitric acid into NO2 + groups. my question is, which characteristic of sulfuric acid allows the formation of NO2 + groups? its hygroscopicity? its acidity? both?

@@lucianoperitore6647 The acidity is the main factor as it stabilizes transition states - which in return helps with the substitution of hydrogen atoms from nitro groups introduced into the glycerin, that's why sulfuric acid is a common catalyst (although you need to filter it out with alkalines afterwards

Even though the product did separate out, at least somewhat, I assume it's too soluble in nitric acid so the concentration of acid was lowered by adding the water, precipitating out more product, and maybe allowing the oiled-out product to crystallize as well?

As long as you keep the temps really low during production and only make small amounts the risk is pretty low (if you're trained or a very mindful person, we all know that one person who can break an anvil so to speak). Also, don't keep it and let it age for any extended amount of time. It degrades and as time passes, it gets more and more unstable.
