Back in Hawaii for a little reef fishing! My goal was to catch and cook a new fish on this day and I got 2! I've caught both of these fish before but I never tried cooking either of them. The results were surprising!

The fish you thought was a “scad” is actually called ‘aholehole and its a hawaiian flagtail. Scad is called halalu/akule here and you really only catch them while whipping

Yes, you can fish for them - in fact, they are an unregulated species with no daily limit or size restrictions. They are neither listed as endangered nor threatened. They are the official state fish, but that carries no specific restrictions/protections.

For anyone ranting in the comments you can legally d catch and keep the humuhumu and there is no daily limit on them either. They are the state fish, but that does not put any restrictions on them.
